A hidden mechanic is a concealed rule or system that affects how a game plays. An Easter egg is a concealed discovery whose main purpose is usually to reward curiosity with a reference, joke, message, or other connection. The two can overlap: a secret can both change gameplay and be a discovery in its own right.
How to tell a hidden mechanic from an Easter egg
Ask what the concealed element primarily does. If it quietly changes rules, tuning, enemy behavior, or the outcome of ordinary play, it is best understood as a hidden mechanic. If finding it is the point—because it reveals a reference, joke, message, optional scene, or reward—it is best understood as an Easter egg.
This is a practical distinction, not a formal industry standard. The terms do not have universally agreed boundaries, and a secret may fit both. In those cases, describe both functions instead of forcing it into one category.

Game Developer’s account of hidden systems focuses on how they can alter players’ experience of danger or their responses to combat, whether or not players notice the adjustments. Its discussion of Easter eggs, by contrast, centers on optional concealed discoveries such as a hidden scene or a reference. Caleb Compton’s 2019 article on hidden game mechanics and Game Developer’s collection of developers’ favorite Easter eggs illustrate those different emphases.

What counts as a hidden mechanic?
A hidden mechanic is game behavior the player is not told about, but that still influences the experience. It can be a rule, a bit of tuning, or a system that changes how a situation plays out. Its importance comes from what it does, not from whether the player eventually uncovers it.
For example, a concealed adjustment to enemy accuracy could change whether a player feels they had time to react. A hidden system that affects the significance of a character’s final health points could make a low-health escape feel more or less precarious. These systems can shape a player’s perception even when they are mistaken for ordinary difficulty or chance.
Caleb Compton’s 2019 Game Developer article describes examples involving the value of the final health points in Assassin’s Creed and Doom, a last-bullet damage effect in System Shock, and enemy AI that may deliberately miss its first shot in BioShock, Assassin’s Creed, and Luftrausers. These are examples as described in that article, not claims that every release or installment in those series behaves identically. Compton also notes that some of the article’s material was reproduced and modified from the original RemptonGames article.

A hidden mechanic does not have to be a secret code, a hidden room, or a thing the player can deliberately activate. It may operate in the background every time a relevant situation occurs. That is why “I found a secret” and “the game contains a hidden mechanic” are not interchangeable claims: one describes a discovery, while the other describes concealed behavior.
What counts as an Easter egg?
An Easter egg is a deliberately concealed discovery placed for players to find. It may be a visual or audio reference, an inside joke, a callback, a hidden room, or a reward. Often, the act of discovering it is part of the enjoyment: a player notices a clue, explores somewhere optional, or shares the find with others.
Easter eggs can be purely referential, but they are not necessarily cosmetic or without gameplay effects. A secret may unlock a bonus, provide a functional advantage, or require players to solve a puzzle together. The scholarly review by Matthew Lakier and Daniel Vogel discusses both ornamental and functional Easter eggs, including cheat-code examples. Because their paper’s own research focuses more broadly on software application Easter eggs, it is useful here for the taxonomy and overlap—not for claims about how common Easter eggs are in games.

Optional discoveries and references
In Horizon Forbidden West, Guerrilla placed three hidden carved figures referencing God of War. Finding all three unlocks a cosmetic face-paint bonus. Senior World Designer Elijah Houck described them as standalone Easter eggs that were intentionally harder to find than other collectible sets. Guerrilla also omitted map markers and quest tracking, allowing players to encounter them naturally. PlayStation.Blog’s April 18, 2022 account of the War Totems gives the studio’s explanation of their design.

By contrast, the same article treats a Mario reference along the main story path in Assassin’s Creed II as arguably more of a pop-culture shoutout than an Easter egg. That is a helpful distinction, not a binding definition: a reference can be conspicuous or part of the expected story rather than a hidden reward for exploration.
Community hunts and functional rewards
The Phantom Program in Battlefield 4 shows how an Easter egg can become a collaborative hunt. Electronic Arts describes a clue trail that community members solved together, with the Phantom Bow as the reward. It is both a concealed discovery and a process that culminates in a functional item. EA’s account is specific to that game and hunt; it does not establish that all Easter eggs work this way. EA’s October 6, 2015 overview of Easter eggs in its games discusses the Phantom Program alongside other title-specific examples.

Can an Easter egg change gameplay?
Yes. “Easter egg” describes the nature and purpose of a concealed discovery, not a promise that it has no effect on play. An Easter egg that grants a weapon or advantage can also function as a gameplay feature. Likewise, a hidden collectible may unlock a cosmetic reward while remaining primarily an optional discovery.
To explain a case clearly, separate the questions: Is the element intentionally concealed for players to find? Does finding it communicate a reference or reward curiosity? Does it also change what the player can do or what happens in play? If the answers point in more than one direction, name the overlap. Lakier and Vogel’s review of ornamental and functional Easter eggs supports treating the categories as capable of intersecting rather than as opposites.

A practical way to classify a secret
When writing about a disputed or unfamiliar game feature, use these checks. They are an editorial rule of thumb, not a formal rubric recognized across the industry.

- Check whether it changes play. Does the concealed element alter rules, tuning, enemy behavior, combat, or outcomes? If so, it has a hidden-mechanic function.
- Check whether discovery is the point. Is it deliberately concealed, optional, or revealed through exploration, a clue, or a puzzle? That supports describing it as an Easter egg.
- Ask what the discovery communicates. Does it reveal a reference, joke, message, or connection, or reward the player for finding it? Those are common Easter egg purposes.
- Consider where it appears. An optional hidden room or collectible is a stronger fit for an Easter egg than a reference encountered along the expected main-story path, though the boundary is not absolute.
- Describe any reward accurately. Distinguish a cosmetic unlock from a functional advantage; either can accompany an Easter egg.
- Explain overlap instead of choosing arbitrarily. If the discovery both rewards exploration and changes play, call it a functional Easter egg or explain that it serves both roles.
What should not automatically be called an Easter egg?
A hidden room, collectible, cheat, bug, or exploit is not automatically an Easter egg. The label implies intentional concealment and a purpose such as a reference, joke, message, connection, or reward. A hidden area might be ordinary level design; a collectible might be a standard progression item; a bug might be unintended. Without evidence of intent, describe what players have observed and avoid presenting the Easter egg label as established fact.
The cited examples show intentional design—for instance, Guerrilla explicitly describes its War Totems as deliberately hidden Easter eggs—but they do not provide a universal test for every community discovery. If a feature’s origin is disputed, distinguish verified developer statements from player interpretation.
Why the distinction matters
Calling a background system an Easter egg can make a consequential part of a game sound like an optional joke. Calling every optional reference a mechanic can obscure why discovery is its main appeal. The distinction helps players understand whether a secret quietly shapes their ordinary experience, waits to be found, or does both.

It also makes discussion more precise. Instead of arguing over a rigid label, explain whether the feature changes rules or outcomes, whether players must discover it, what it communicates, where it appears, and what reward—if any—it gives. Those details convey more than the category alone.
