There is no objective “hidden gem” rating: the label means a game is worth a closer look, not that it is unknown to everyone or better than popular alternatives. These picks cover different tastes—from approachable exploration to clue-driven mysteries and tactical deckbuilding—so you can choose by the kind of play you want.
How these recommendations were selected
Here, “hidden gem” is a curation judgment for games that may be easy to miss in broad storefront feeds or mainstream coverage. Steam’s Hidden Gems & Indies curator describes its focus as overlooked games deserving more recognition, especially work from independent developers and small teams. That is a useful discovery lens, not a standardized measure of popularity or quality.
The recommendations below are organized by the experience they offer: what you do, what sets each game apart, and which player might enjoy it. The descriptions draw on editorial listings from the Epic Games Store and TechSpot; they are not claims of hands-on testing. Storefronts and regional catalogs change, so check the specific platform listing for the edition you want before buying.

| Game | What it offers | Best starting point for |
|---|---|---|
| Cursed to Golf | Roguelike golf, as described in the Epic Games Store’s list. | Players curious about a golf game with run-based structure. |
| Eastward | A narrative RPG featuring two-character switching, according to the Epic Games Store’s list. | Players looking for a story-focused RPG with a paired-character hook. |
These are distinct pitches, not interchangeable recommendations. Choose based on whether the core activity sounds appealing; a “hidden gem” label cannot tell you whether you will enjoy a genre you usually avoid.
How to find more games that fit you
Start with the activity, not the label
Decide what you want to do most: explore, solve puzzles, investigate clues, build a deck, or navigate terrain. Then look for games whose descriptions make that core loop clear. Genre and tag filters can narrow a large catalog, but a matching tag is only a starting point.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use discovery lists with context
Steam’s curator presents brief reviews and filters such as action, indie, RPG, roguelite, and strategy. Epic’s editorial list groups games through genre, premise, and play style. Independent discovery sites offer other selection approaches: Underplayed says it hand-picks features and does not accept payment for coverage; overlooked.gg says it buys reviewed games and does not accept developer keys or sponsored slots. Those policies describe how the sites say they operate; they do not establish that every recommendation will suit you.
Check the details that affect your choice
- Core loop: Look for the repeated activity—exploration, puzzle-solving, combat, deckbuilding, or navigation—that you actually want.
- Tone and story: Decide whether you want a plot-forward, atmospheric, comic, or more mechanics-focused experience; seek a fuller description when a listing does not make this clear.
- Challenge and pace: Do not infer difficulty, session length, or total playtime when a listing does not state it.
- Platform and edition: Verify the title’s current listing on your platform and region. A PC-oriented editorial page does not confirm console access or subscription inclusion.
- Age suitability: Check the game’s rating and content details for your region if age restrictions matter.
Why a good recommendation list needs variety
A 2021 University of Alberta ASGAARD Lab presentation on game recommendation design highlights consistent genre labels and extensive tags, matching recommendations to personal preferences, setting expectations, and including less-similar options to add variety. Its developer questionnaire received 195 responses from 1,526 indie developers contacted; 159 respondents provided non-empty overall feedback. Among surveyed developers, 67.9% supported the approach studied, 29.6% were neutral, and 2.5% did not support it. Those figures describe that questionnaire, not all game developers or players. The practical takeaway for a reader is simpler: a useful list should explain why a game might fit and include alternatives for different tastes, rather than treating obscurity as a recommendation by itself.
