Hermit can turn websites into app-like Android shortcuts called Lite Apps, letting you use a site’s web version instead of keeping its native app installed. The 6GB figure in the original headline is one author’s reported result, not a typical or independently verified saving. Whether you can remove an app without losing anything depends on that app’s data and the website’s features, so check both before uninstalling.
How Hermit Lite Apps can free phone storage
A Hermit Lite App is a website launched in an app-like form; it is not a converted native Android app. Hermit’s Getting Started guide describes Lite Apps as web apps that can be accessed through any browser, with Hermit adding features to make them feel more like native apps. You can select a preconfigured site from Hermit’s Library or create a Lite App using a website address.
The potential storage saving comes from uninstalling a native app after switching to its website. The amount reclaimed varies with the particular apps you remove and the data each has stored locally. The 6GB in the headline is the author’s personal report; the article’s device, app list, measurement method, and data checks were not independently confirmed. It is not a benchmark or a result to expect on every phone.

Check data and site features before uninstalling
Do not assume a website shortcut migrates data out of the corresponding app. Before uninstalling, establish where important information lives and whether the website gives you access to it.
- Confirm that photos, messages, documents, drafts, saved items, or other content you need are synced to your account or backed up somewhere you can restore from.
- Verify your username, password, two-factor authentication method, and account-recovery options. Sign in to the website before removing the native app.
- Test the actions you rely on, including media playback, uploads, downloads, notifications, and any account or payment flow that matters to you.
- Check password autofill and any sign-in flow that uses another service. A login that works in the native app may behave differently in a browser.
- Keep the native app installed until the website version works reliably and you have confirmed your important content is available.
These checks reduce the risk of losing access, but they are not a Hermit-provided data migration or a guarantee that every app’s data is preserved. If you uninstall an app before confirming its data is backed up or account-synced, a Lite App may not restore it.

What Hermit’s sandboxes do
Sandboxes separate browsing sessions and profiles, such as personal and work logins. They are distinct from the storage-saving workflow: you do not need a separate sandbox to create a Lite App or replace a native app. Hermit’s Sandbox feature page lists Android 9 Pie and above and says colored sandboxes are a Premium feature; a default sandbox is available without that feature.

Hermit sandboxes add separation for sessions at the same site, which can help when you need different accounts. Two Lite Apps in the same sandbox cannot maintain two simultaneous logins to the same site. Related sites that use social sign-in or single sign-on may need to share a sandbox to access the same account.

To change a Lite App’s sandbox, assign it in settings, restart the Lite App, swipe away existing Lite Apps in Android’s Recents screen, then reopen it from Hermit’s main list. This resets the active session context; it is not a procedure for migrating app data.
Compatibility limits to test first
Hermit uses Android WebView rather than embedding its own full browser engine. Its FAQ notes that some advanced features may be unavailable, that some sites may require changing popup or third-party-cookie settings to sign in, and that some password managers may not work well. Test the specific sites and account flows you depend on before removing their native apps.

Hermit’s Data Saver is a separate feature and does not explain the reported storage reduction. It asks a website to return a smaller page; a site can ignore the request, and Hermit does not compress all traffic or route it through a proxy. It is not a guarantee of reduced installed-app storage.
When switching to a Lite App makes sense
A Lite App is a reasonable substitute when the site’s web version covers your essential tasks, your important content is accessible through your account or a backup, and the sign-in and browser features work on your phone. If a site lacks a feature you need, or you cannot verify where local data is stored, keep the native app until you have a reliable alternative.
