Hermes and OpenClaw are open-source agent projects you can run and configure yourself; OpenAI Operator was a hosted research preview whose capabilities were later integrated into ChatGPT agent. The practical choice is therefore not a three-way contest between current, equivalent products: it is whether you want to operate an agent project or use OpenAI’s evolving hosted agent experience.

Hermes vs OpenClaw vs OpenAI Operator: what is being compared?

Hermes Agent and OpenClaw are software projects for people prepared to choose a model or provider, configure tools and credentials, and maintain a deployment. OpenClaw describes itself as an extensible, proactive agent; Hermes’ repository documents a broader set of project areas and integrations. These are documented capabilities, not independently tested results. (Hermes Agent repository; OpenClaw documentation)

Operator, by contrast, was introduced by OpenAI as a research preview using its own browser. OpenAI’s July 17, 2025 update says Operator functionality was integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent and that the standalone Operator site would be sunset. Treat Operator as a predecessor and capability lineage—not as a separate current product—unless current official information establishes otherwise. (Introducing Operator; Introducing ChatGPT agent)

How do the operating models differ?

Option Operating model What the sources establish
Hermes Agent Open-source project suited to an operator-managed deployment. The repository documents installation, CLI and configuration, messaging, tools, skills, memory, MCP integration, cron scheduling, security, and migration from OpenClaw. Details should be checked against the release you plan to use. (Hermes Agent repository)
OpenClaw Open-source project with configurable deployment and security choices. Its official overview describes an extensible, proactive agent and explains how configuration affects security. Check the documentation for the version you install. (Why OpenClaw)
OpenAI Operator / ChatGPT agent Operator began as a hosted research preview; OpenAI says its functionality was integrated into ChatGPT agent. OpenAI described Operator using its own browser to view and interact with web pages. Its later launch post describes ChatGPT agent as combining website interaction with research and other capabilities. Current access depends on current product availability. (Introducing Operator; Introducing ChatGPT agent)

Which agent fits your tasks and integrations?

Choose Hermes when its documented project areas match your workflow

Hermes is the more directly documented fit if you need to investigate messaging gateways, toolsets, skills, memory, MCP, or cron scheduling in one project. Its repository also describes migration from OpenClaw, including importing selected settings, memories, skills, and credentials, with dry-run options. These are repository claims; check the instructions for your target release before relying on a particular feature or migration path. (Hermes Agent repository)

Choose OpenClaw when you want its configurable agent approach

OpenClaw’s official overview emphasizes extensibility and proactive behavior, but the material reviewed here does not establish a version-matched integration inventory comparable to Hermes’ repository list. Confirm that the integrations and controls you need exist in the specific OpenClaw release you intend to run. (Why OpenClaw)

Consider ChatGPT agent for a hosted browser-and-research workflow

OpenAI describes ChatGPT agent as bringing together web interaction, research, and other capabilities. That makes it a different kind of choice from deploying Hermes or OpenClaw yourself. The launch material does not establish current eligibility, plan access, or availability, so check OpenAI’s current official product information before deciding. (Introducing ChatGPT agent)

What does setup and ongoing maintenance involve?

With Hermes or OpenClaw, control comes with operational work: you select model and provider arrangements, configure the agent’s tools, protect credentials, and maintain the deployment. The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable setup-time study, so there is no supported basis for claiming one is faster to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A hosted ChatGPT agent experience shifts deployment and maintenance away from the user, but its access and product details can change. The old Operator research-preview terms should not be treated as current pricing or availability.

How should you compare security?

Do not treat “open source” or a product’s positioning as a security rating. Compare the actual configuration, permissions, tools, and trust boundaries you will use.

OpenClaw’s documented defaults

OpenClaw’s official overview says sandboxing and execution approvals are off by default, native plugins run in-process and are not sandboxed, and a single gateway is one trust domain. It also cautions that its comparison concerns configured architectures, not security certifications. The page says its source review was refreshed against specific development snapshots on August 27, 2026; that does not guarantee the same behavior in every release. Check your installed version and configuration. (Why OpenClaw)

Hermes and hosted agent boundaries

The Hermes repository points to security documentation, but the sources reviewed here do not establish equally detailed, version-matched security defaults for a direct comparison. For ChatGPT agent, consult current OpenAI documentation for the controls and data handling that apply to your account and tasks; the launch announcements alone do not settle those details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do the published benchmark numbers settle the comparison?

No. OpenAI’s January 23, 2025 announcement reported Computer-Using Agent results of 38.1% on OSWorld, 58.1% on WebArena, and 87% on WebVoyager. Those figures belong to OpenAI’s CUA announcement; they are not a head-to-head test of Hermes, OpenClaw, and Operator, and they should not be presented as a current comparative ranking. (Computer-Using Agent)

Which AI agent should you choose?

  • Pick Hermes to investigate if its documented messaging, skills, memory, MCP, scheduling, or migration capabilities suit your needs and you are willing to manage a deployment.
  • Pick OpenClaw to investigate if its configurable, extensible agent approach fits your needs and you are prepared to inspect and set its security controls rather than assume they are enabled.
  • Look at ChatGPT agent if you prefer OpenAI’s hosted browser-and-research approach; verify current access and product terms instead of relying on Operator’s old preview status.

For either self-managed project, decide based on the specific tasks, integrations, deployment effort, and security configuration you can support. The available documentation supports a comparison of operating models and documented capabilities, not a universal winner.
