In the U.S., Sony’s recommended price for the standard PlayStation 5 with a disc drive rose from $499.99 at launch in 2020 to $649.99 effective April 2, 2026—a calculated increase of $150, or about 30%. The Digital Edition rose from $399.99 to $599.99, a calculated increase of $200, or about 50%.
PS5 price comparison: 2020 and 2026
The table compares Sony’s U.S. prices for the two base editions. The 2020 figures were launch prices; the 2026 figures are recommended retail prices (RRP) announced March 27, 2026, and effective April 2, 2026.

Sony’s September 16, 2020 launch announcement set the U.S. prices at $499.99 for the disc-drive console and $399.99 for the Digital Edition. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement lists the new U.S. RRPs as $649.99 and $599.99, respectively, effective April 2.

How to interpret the increase
The disc-drive PS5
The like-for-like comparison is $649.99 minus $499.99: a $150 increase. Relative to the original $499.99 price, that is about 30%.

The Digital Edition
The Digital Edition’s comparison is $599.99 minus $399.99: a $200 increase. Relative to its original $399.99 price, that is about 50%.
These percentages are arithmetic based on Sony’s stated prices, not percentages published by Sony. They compare the same named base editions across the two dates; they do not establish how much a specific buyer paid.

What the 2026 prices do—and do not—represent
The 2026 amounts are Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices, not guaranteed checkout prices. A retailer may list a different price, offer a sale or bundle, or have no stock. The comparison also does not adjust for inflation or establish how the consoles’ value changed over time.

The same announcement lists the PS5 Pro at $899.99 in the U.S. from April 2, 2026. The Pro is a separate higher-tier product, so its price is not a continuation of either base-edition price line.

In the March 27, 2026 announcement, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, attributed the decision to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That is Sony’s stated explanation; the announcement does not independently quantify the causes of the price changes.
