If you want the quickest route into Henry Cavill, watch Man of Steel (2013), then The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015), Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), The Witcher (2019–2023), and The Tudors (2007–2010). Add Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League to follow his Superman story. For Mark Hamill, watch the original trilogy—Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983)—then sample Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994) for the voice career that made him a defining Joker performer.

The two actors are best understood through different anchors: Hamill’s career begins with Luke Skywalker and expands through animation, while Cavill’s moves from Superman into spy films, historical drama, fantasy television, and contemporary action.

Henry Cavill: the essential viewing route

Cavill’s filmography is easiest to follow in three lanes: the connected Superman films, his spy and action work, and television or literary adaptations. The titles below give you a purposeful sample rather than an exhaustive list.

1. Man of Steel (2013)

Man of Steel is Cavill’s first major appearance as Clark Kent/Superman and the clearest introduction to his screen interpretation of the character. It establishes the version of Superman that continues into later DC films, so it should precede the ensemble stories.

Star Wars: Episode IV ? a New Hope / Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back / Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
  • The Skywalker saga’s center trilogy introduces Luke Skywalker, who is drawn into the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire when he is recruited by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Strong in the Force, Luke is confronted with a shocking truth — while Sith Lord Darth Vader faces a supreme decision.

2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

This is the next major Cavill Superman appearance. It broadens his story by placing Clark in conflict with Bruce Wayne and gives the character a more divided public and political context than the solo film. Watch it after Man of Steel if you want the Superman arc in release order.

3. Justice League (2017) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

Justice League is the 2017 theatrical ensemble continuation. Zack Snyder’s Justice League, released in 2021, is the later director’s-cut version listed in Cavill’s filmography. They occupy the same broad chapter of his Superman career, but they are separate releases with different cuts and running experiences. Viewers who want to compare the versions should watch the theatrical film first and the 2021 cut second; viewers focused only on the expanded version can choose the 2021 release after Batman v Superman.

4. Black Adam (2022)

Cavill has a brief Superman appearance in Black Adam. It works as an optional coda to his DC appearances rather than as a required step in the main character arc. Watch it after the other Superman titles so the cameo does not interrupt the central progression.

Cavill’s spy and action range

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)

This stylish spy-comedy is the best first demonstration that Cavill is not limited to solemn superhero material. He plays Napoleon Solo with a lighter, more playful screen presence, and the film’s partnership-driven structure makes his timing and charm easy to see.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

In Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cavill plays August Walker in a large-scale action production. The role places him in a more physically driven, high-pressure spy story than The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Watching both films back to back shows the difference between his comic, tailored-agent performance and his harder-edged action work.

Argylle (2024)

Argylle is a contemporary spy-comedy lead role and extends Cavill’s association with espionage stories into a more self-aware, modern setting. It is a useful choice after the two earlier spy films if you want to trace how he handles the genre across different tones.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

This wartime action title adds a period military setting to Cavill’s action résumé. It is best treated as a companion to Mission: Impossible – Fallout rather than as part of the Superman continuity.

Cavill on television and in literary adaptations

The Tudors (2007–2010)

The Tudors is Cavill’s major early television showcase. He plays Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, in the historical drama. The series is valuable for seeing him before his global Superman profile and for observing how he handles an ensemble role built around court politics, romance, and period performance.

The Witcher (2019–2023)

Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia across 24 listed episodes of The Witcher. The fantasy series gives him a sustained lead role rather than a film-length introduction, allowing viewers to follow a character over multiple episodes and story arcs. Its position after his superhero and spy work makes the contrast clear: Geralt relies on restraint, physicality, and a deliberately limited speaking style.

Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022)

In both Enola Holmes films, Cavill plays Sherlock Holmes. These are supporting performances in stories centered on Enola, but they show him using a more polished detective persona and a lighter family-adventure tone. Watch the first film before the sequel because the second continues the established relationships and premise.

A practical Cavill watch order

  1. Man of Steel (2013) — establish his Superman.
  2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) — continue the Superman storyline.
  3. Justice League (2017) — see the theatrical ensemble continuation.
  4. Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) — compare or substitute the expanded director’s cut.
  5. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) — switch to comic spy mode.
  6. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) — sample his major action role.
  7. The Tudors (2007–2010) — go back to his early television work.
  8. The Witcher (2019–2023) — watch his longest listed lead performance.
  9. Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022) — finish with his Sherlock Holmes appearances.
  10. Argylle (2024), The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024), and Black Adam (2022) — add these optional recent or connected appearances.

This order is a sampler, not a claim that every title must be watched in production chronology. The DC films are grouped first because they form the clearest recurring character thread; the remaining titles are arranged to expose his range.

Mark Hamill: the essential viewing route

Hamill’s filmography has two defining phases. The first is Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. The second is a broad voice career, especially his Joker performance in DC animation. His later live-action films are worth sampling, but those two phases explain most of his cultural impact.

1. Star Wars (1977)

Star Wars made Hamill a household name by casting him as Luke Skywalker. It is the essential starting point because it introduces Luke’s ordinary beginnings, his first step into the larger conflict, and the character relationships that drive the trilogy.

2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The Empire Strikes Back deepens Luke’s training and personal stakes while expanding the mythology introduced in the first film. It should be watched directly after Star Wars, not treated as a standalone sequel, because its emotional and narrative developments depend on the original.

3. Return of the Jedi (1983)

Return of the Jedi completes the original trilogy’s central conflict and Luke’s first major screen journey. Watching all three films in release order remains the most coherent way to understand why the character became a generational hero. D23 described Luke as, “For an entire generation of filmgoers, there has been no greater hero than Luke Skywalker.”

Hamill’s live-action work beyond Star Wars

Corvette Summer (1978)

Corvette Summer is an early non-Star Wars live-action choice. It lets you see Hamill in a role outside the space-fantasy identity that had just made him famous.

The Big Red One (1980)

The Big Red One provides another live-action counterpoint from the same broad period. Pairing it with Corvette Summer is the quickest way to sample his early attempt to build a film career beyond Luke Skywalker.

Hamill’s voice and animation legacy

Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994)

Batman: The Animated Series is the key follow-up once you have seen the original trilogy. Hamill’s Joker became his best-known voice role in DC media and marked a major second phase of his career. The performance is radically different from Luke: instead of a heroic central protagonist, he creates an unpredictable villain through vocal rhythm, laughter, and menace.

Other animation touchpoints

Biography.com identifies The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997) and Superman (1997) among Hamill’s notable animation work. These shows help demonstrate the breadth of his voice acting beyond one character. They are useful samples after Batman: The Animated Series, especially for viewers interested in how he moved between guest, recurring, and continuing television roles.

Biography.com reported more than 250 roles in 2019. That figure explains why a short essential list cannot represent every important credit: Hamill’s voice work spans many productions, while the original trilogy remains the unavoidable screen foundation.

A practical Hamill watch order

  1. Star Wars (1977) — meet Luke Skywalker.
  2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) — follow Luke’s training and central conflict.
  3. Return of the Jedi (1983) — complete the original trilogy.
  4. Corvette Summer (1978) — sample an early non-franchise film.
  5. The Big Red One (1980) — add a contrasting live-action performance.
  6. Batman: The Animated Series (1992–1994) — hear the Joker performance that defines his animation legacy.
  7. The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest (1996–1997) and Superman (1997) — continue through notable animation credits.

The first three films should remain together. The live-action titles can be inserted between them if you want a chronological experiment, but doing so breaks the trilogy’s narrative momentum.

Choosing what to watch based on your interest

If you want a complete superhero arc

Choose Cavill’s four-film Superman sequence from Man of Steel through Zack Snyder’s Justice League, then add Black Adam for the brief later appearance. This route prioritizes one recurring character over genre variety.

If you want acting range rather than franchise continuity

Use The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Tudors, and The Witcher. Together they move from comedy and tailored espionage to high-intensity action, historical drama, and sustained fantasy television.

If you want Hamill beyond Luke

Watch Batman: The Animated Series after the trilogy, then sample Corvette Summer, The Big Red One, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, and Superman. This sequence makes the shift from live-action leading man to major voice performer visible.

If you are deciding what to buy

The most direct physical starting points are an original-trilogy Blu-ray or 4K collection for Hamill and a Man of Steel Blu-ray or 4K disc for Cavill. Edition, region, stock, and price change by retailer and date, so verify those details before purchasing. Streaming rights for The Witcher and other titles also vary by territory and can change over time.

What the filmographies show

Hamill’s essential path is concentrated: three films establish Luke, and animation reveals the second career that followed. Cavill’s is more distributed: one Superman film introduces him, ensemble films continue that identity, and separate projects demonstrate how he works in spy comedy, action, historical drama, fantasy, and literary adaptation. Watching the recommended titles in those lanes gives you the clearest answer to both actors’ most important screen work without requiring a complete credit-by-credit marathon.
