The backlash against Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is repeating an old video-game argument. Rockstar’s 2003 stealth-horror game Manhunt was condemned for putting player-directed executions at the center of play. Revival is provoking similar outrage over graphic violence, body horror, nudity and sexual themes, but its reviews also identify ordinary design and technical problems. Those are separate questions: a game can make audiences uncomfortable because of its subject matter and still be judged on pacing, combat, resources, bosses and bugs.

That distinction explains why the current reaction is so divided. ComicBook.com reported a 69/100 critic score alongside a user score of approximately 8.5/10 in its October 15, 2026 feature. The figures are a dated snapshot whose platform, language and calculation method were not specified, not a permanent consensus.

Why Manhunt is the relevant precedent

Manhunt (2003) is the older game being used as the comparison because its controversy was built into the act of playing. You control a serial killer and stage increasingly extreme executions, including maiming, torture and dismemberment. The player is not merely watching violent scenes or firing at distant targets; the game asks the player to approach victims, choose an execution method and carry it out at close range.

That design drew condemnation comparable to the reaction to Mortal Kombat, including calls for the game to be banned. The historical point is not that every critic disliked Manhunt for the same reason. It is that public discussion often reduced a game to “senseless violence,” leaving little room to discuss stealth structure, tension, level design or the way the mechanics create dread.

Danielson’s comparison uses that pattern to frame Revival: controversy over what a game depicts is not, by itself, proof that the game has no artistic purpose or survival-horror value.

What people are criticizing in Hellraiser: Revival

The content itself

Revival combines graphic violence with Hellraiser’s pain-and-pleasure mythology. The game includes body horror, nudity and sexual themes, and its Cenobites and other imagery are designed to be disturbing rather than merely spooky. For some players, that material is the primary objection. It is a content boundary, not a complaint that a gun feels weak or that a boss has too much health.

The game’s execution

Other criticism concerns conventional game quality. ComicBook.com’s report says some low scores focus on a rushed story or gameplay ideas that do not land. Reviews separately cite clumsy controls, weak combat feedback, scarce ammunition and crafting supplies, uneven level design, frustrating bosses and technical bugs. A player can reject the subject matter, the execution, or both; those judgments should not be collapsed into one claim that the game is controversial only because it is violent.

What the reviews agree on

Three reviews identify a recognizable set of strengths and weaknesses, even though their scores differ.

Review Format and score Praised Criticized
Push Square About eight hours; 5/10 Brutal Hellraiser subject matter, disturbing visuals and trippy Labyrinth sections Clunky controls, inconsistent level design, severe resource shortages and frustrating boss encounters; ammunition and crafting supplies do not match the number of enemies and bosses
Game Informer Roughly 10-hour campaign The review treats the premise as a committed first-person survival-horror game Gunplay and melee lack weight, enemy AI is weak, resource economy becomes badly imbalanced, and the campaign is called a “technical mess”
Creative Bloq Review by Ian Dean The Labyrinth, Cenobites and the game’s willingness to embrace adult Hellraiser themes Familiar immersive-sim actions, stiff controls and boss fights that drag

Game Informer also records pop-in, flickering objects, missing or mismatched subtitles, audio failures, a frozen healing animation and an encounter that required reloading. Those are reproducible categories of failure, not arguments about taste. The review lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, and gives an October 8, 2026 release date.

How the two games differ

Comparison point Manhunt Hellraiser: Revival
Source of controversy Player-directed executions, including close-up maiming, torture and dismemberment Graphic violence combined with Hellraiser’s pain-and-pleasure mythology, nudity and sexual themes
Core structure Stealth-action built around stalking targets and choosing executions First-person survival-horror shooter with combat, puzzle solving, the Genesis Configuration and Labyrinth exploration
Atmosphere Urban pursuit and fear created by hiding, watching and attacking Cenobites, disturbing visuals and surreal Labyrinth sequences carry the horror identity
Main critical question Whether the execution mechanic turns violence into the game’s defining spectacle Whether the explicit material is artistically effective, and whether the surrounding systems are polished enough to support it

Calling Revival “another Manhunt” therefore misses the mechanical difference. Both use close-up violence to generate discomfort, but Revival adds exploration and puzzle work around the Genesis Configuration and the Labyrinth. Its violence is part of a licensed supernatural world rather than a standalone execution loop.

Why the critic and user reactions are so far apart

The reported 69/100 critic score and approximately 8.5/10 user score can coexist because different audiences are measuring different things. Reviewers tend to weigh pacing, combat feel, balance, bugs and consistency across the whole campaign. Fans who wanted an unapologetically explicit Hellraiser game may value the Cenobites, imagery and Labyrinth sections more heavily, or may be more tolerant of rough edges.

That does not make either figure definitive. The user number was reported as “somewhere closer to” 8.5 out of 10, and the article does not establish the platform, language or date basis for it. Treat both values as a snapshot of a live conversation; patches, additional reviews and changing user votes can move them.

Is Revival worth buying if you like Manhunt?

Your answer depends on which part of Manhunt you want to carry forward.

  • ICONIC HORROR CLASSIC: Directed by Clive Barker and based on his novel 'The Hellbound Heart,' Hellraiser introduced the world to Pinhead and remains one of the most original visions in horror history.
  • Buy cautiously if you want polished mechanics. The documented problems are substantial: stiff or clumsy controls, light-feeling gunplay and melee, weak enemy AI, scarce resources, uneven bosses and multiple technical failures. A patch may change the experience, so check current platform notes and recent player reports before paying.
  • Consider it if atmosphere is your priority. The reviews consistently praise the Hellraiser commitment, Cenobites, disturbing visuals and Labyrinth passages. Those elements are the clearest reason to accept a rougher campaign.
  • Skip it if the content itself is a deal-breaker. The game includes graphic violence, body horror, nudity and sexual themes. The available buying guidance reports no streamer mode that removes or alters that material, so do not assume it can be disabled.
  • Do not expect a one-for-one sequel to Manhunt. Revival is a first-person survival-horror shooter with puzzles and exploration, not a stealth game centered on execution selection.

Platforms, timing and practical checks

Reviews identify PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC versions. The listed release date is October 8, 2026, but availability, pricing, stock and patch behavior can differ by platform and region. Verify the store listing immediately before purchase, and check whether the version you are considering has received fixes for subtitle mismatches, audio failures, frozen healing animations or the reload-required encounter reported by Game Informer.

If you are looking for the older comparison game, the most precise retail search phrase is “Manhunt video game.” Check whether a listing is new, used or imported and confirm platform compatibility; availability is not established by the comparison itself.

The useful verdict

Hellraiser: Revival is controversial for two different reasons. Its explicit Hellraiser content invites the same kind of moral condemnation that surrounded Manhunt, while its reviews document familiar production problems that have nothing to do with morality: weak feedback, scarce supplies, boss design, pacing and bugs. The strongest case for the game is its atmosphere and its commitment to the Labyrinth and Cenobites. The strongest case against it is that the systems supporting that atmosphere can feel unfinished.

That is why the Manhunt comparison is useful. It separates the question “Do I want to engage with this material?” from the question “Does the game execute its mechanics well?” Answer both before treating the current backlash as either proof of artistic failure or proof that every criticism is unfair.
