Hellraiser: Revival and Clive Barker’s Undying are both first-person horror games, but they use very different combat loops. Revival is a modern action-survival-horror game built around ammunition pressure, crafting, physical puzzles and the Genesis Configuration puzzle box. Undying is a 2001 action/horror FPS that combines conventional weapons with eight spells, sound-based caution, broad exploration and boss quests tied to a cursed family.
In practical terms, Revival asks you to make careful short-term decisions in dangerous spaces: whether to spend ammunition, search for supplies, solve a lock or safe, and switch between ordinary weapons and puzzle-box powers. Undying gives you a larger supernatural toolkit and expects you to learn enemy behavior, listen for danger, improve spell effectiveness and prepare for major encounters. The better fit depends on whether you want a compact modern survival-horror rhythm or a more expansive early-2000s horror-FPS adventure.
The core difference at a glance
| Aspect | Hellraiser: Revival | Clive Barker’s Undying |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Single-player, first-person action survival horror | First-person action/horror FPS released in 2001 |
| Primary combat idea | Ordinary weapons combined with Genesis Configuration powers | Firearms and other weapons combined with a broad spell system |
| Resource pressure | Ammunition, crafting supplies and upgrade rewards from exploration | Weapon management, spell selection and spell-effect improvement |
| Puzzle role | Lock-picking and safe-combination puzzles can provide practical upgrades | Exploration and supernatural abilities drive progression; the documented design emphasizes spells rather than safe-and-lock puzzles |
| Stealth and awareness | Documented material emphasizes combat, puzzles and resource decisions | Sound is explicitly described as vital to staying alive |
| World and bosses | Scarlet Church and the Unworthy are major enemy groups | Ten areas, more than 20 enemy types or entries, and five horrifying boss characters |
| Story setting | Hellraiser mythology involving the Scarlet Church, the Unworthy and the Genesis Configuration | 1920s Ireland, where Patrick Galloway helps Jeremiah confront his reanimated siblings and the Curse of the Undying King |
| Documented campaign estimate | Saber says around 8–12 hours, depending on playstyle | No comparable duration is stated in the cited fact sheet |
The table shows why these games should not be treated as interchangeable versions of the same formula. Revival concentrates its decisions around a survival-horror economy and a signature puzzle box. Undying spreads its identity across weapons, spells, sound, exploration and a sequence of family-centered boss confrontations.
What each game is trying to make you feel
Revival: pressure inside a puzzle-box world
Saber describes Revival as a “single-player, first-person action survival horror experience.” That wording matters. It places the game in the modern survival-horror tradition rather than presenting it as a pure run-and-gun shooter. The player is expected to fight, but also to conserve useful materials, investigate spaces and decide when a reward is worth the risk of solving a puzzle or entering a dangerous area.

The Genesis Configuration is central to that identity. In Revival, the box is not merely a story prop or an object that opens a scripted sequence. Saber’s July 2026 developer material says players can dual-wield weapons and Genesis Configuration powers while fighting major enemy groups such as the Scarlet Church and the Unworthy. That makes the puzzle box part of moment-to-moment decision-making: your supernatural ability is another combat option that must be integrated with ordinary weapons.
Undying: a supernatural FPS with a wider toolkit
Electronic Arts’ 2001 fact sheet classifies Undying as “First Person Action/Horror.” Its design is broader and more systemic. You carry a conventional arsenal, but you also have eight spells and must choose which supernatural effect suits the threat in front of you. The result is less about one signature object and more about learning how an entire magical loadout changes combat and exploration.
The fact sheet also describes sound as “actually a vital tool to staying alive.” That points to a different kind of tension. Undying wants you to listen, interpret what you hear and avoid treating every room as a simple target gallery. Its horror comes from the combination of armed combat, spell management, environmental discovery and the possibility that awareness is as important as firepower.

Revival’s likely rhythm
Revival’s documented features support a compact loop: enter a threatening space, search for useful items, solve a physical obstacle, fight with a mixture of weapons and Genesis powers, then decide how to spend the rewards. The lock-pick and safe-combination puzzles are not detached minigames. Their possible rewards include ammunition, crafting resources, upgrades or a new weapon, so exploration directly affects your ability to handle later encounters.
That structure naturally creates pauses between fights. A player may leave a locked container unresolved because the immediate route is dangerous, return after finding the necessary information, or choose to spend time searching because an upgrade could make the next battle safer. The pacing is therefore defined by alternating bursts of first-person combat with short, practical acts of investigation.
Undying’s classic shooter momentum
Undying’s first-person action structure is more expansive. The game offers eight weapons, eight spells, ten areas, five major boss characters and more than 20 enemies according to Electronic Arts’ fact sheet. Those numbers describe a campaign with room for variety rather than a narrow sequence of puzzle-box encounters.
Its pace is shaped by movement through haunted locations and by switching between weapon and spell solutions. A shotgun can answer a close threat, while a spell such as Skull Storm offers a destructive supernatural response. Scrye serves a different purpose by revealing hidden story clues, and spirit-world flight is a special mode rather than a normal weapon. The player’s rhythm is consequently less about one recurring puzzle mechanic and more about deciding which part of a large toolkit belongs in the current situation.

Combat systems and loadouts
Revival’s weapons plus Genesis Configuration powers
Revival’s combat distinction is the interaction between ordinary weapons and the Genesis Configuration. Saber’s July 2026 developer article specifically describes players attacking while dual-wielding weapons and Genesis Configuration powers. Even without a complete weapon list, that description establishes an important design principle: the puzzle box is active during combat.
That arrangement gives the player two overlapping categories of response. Conventional weapons are likely to be the familiar answer to immediate threats, while Genesis powers provide the Hellraiser-specific layer that changes how an encounter can be approached. The strategic question is not simply “Which gun does the most damage?” It is also “When is a supernatural power worth using instead of preserving ammunition or crafting materials?”
Because Revival’s puzzles can award ammunition, crafting resources, upgrades or a new weapon, combat and exploration are linked. Opening a safe can improve your options in a later fight; spending resources carelessly can make the next section more demanding. The game’s documented design therefore points toward a survival-horror economy in which every successful encounter has a cost and every optional reward can alter your margin for error.
Undying’s eight-weapon, eight-spell toolbox
Undying has a more explicitly enumerated arsenal. Electronic Arts lists eight weapons and eight spells. The documented weapons include a shotgun, Molotov cocktails, the Tibetan War Cannon and the Scythe of The Celt. This is a deliberately unusual mixture: conventional firearms sit beside thrown incendiaries, a distinctive heavy weapon and a melee-oriented supernatural artifact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe spells are not simply extra ammunition types. Skull Storm is identified as destructive, while Scrye reveals hidden story clues. Spirit-world flight is described as a special mode, showing that the supernatural system can affect movement and discovery as well as damage output. The breadth of those functions gives Undying a more role-like combat feel than a game whose powers exist only to increase firepower.
Undying also supports improvement of spell effectiveness. That creates a progression question that Revival frames differently: should you strengthen the magical options you rely on, or preserve flexibility across several spells? The answer can depend on the enemy, the area and the information you gain from listening and exploration. The game rewards players who learn what each spell is for instead of selecting one universal attack.
Which combat system is deeper?
“Deeper” depends on the kind of decision you value. Revival’s depth comes from combining limited supplies, puzzle rewards, dual-wielded weapons and Genesis powers in a tightly focused survival-horror loop. Undying’s depth comes from the number of distinct tools and the need to choose among weapons, spells, sound awareness and movement options.

If you prefer a smaller set of systems that constantly interact, Revival is the more concentrated design. If you enjoy experimenting with a larger supernatural arsenal and learning which spell or weapon fits a situation, Undying offers the broader combat vocabulary.
Puzzles, resources and progression
Revival makes puzzles materially useful
The official Revival puzzle feature describes classic lock-pick and safe-combination puzzles. Their significance is practical: rewards can include crafting resources, ammunition, upgrades or a new weapon. Solving a puzzle is therefore a form of character and equipment progression, not just optional lore hunting.
This arrangement creates several useful decisions. You may need to judge whether a locked container is worth revisiting, whether the reward could offset the resources spent reaching it, and whether an upgrade changes your preferred combat approach. The puzzle itself is physical and legible—find the combination, manipulate the lock—but its consequence is strategic because it changes what you can afford in later fights.
Undying makes progression about abilities and discovery
Undying’s documented progression emphasizes its eight spells, their effectiveness and the exploration of ten areas. Scrye’s ability to reveal hidden story clues means that supernatural power can also function as an investigation tool. Spirit-world flight similarly expands what the player can perceive or reach during a special mode.
The contrast is important. Revival attaches optional problem-solving to supplies and equipment. Undying attaches supernatural progression to combat variety, clues and movement through haunted locations. Both games reward curiosity, but they make curiosity pay out in different currencies.

Stealth, sound and enemy behavior
Undying’s explicit sound-based survival
The clearest documented stealth distinction belongs to Undying. Its fact sheet says that sound is “actually a vital tool to staying alive.” That statement supports a stealth-and-awareness reading rather than a claim that the game is a dedicated stealth title. You are still playing an action/horror FPS, but listening is part of survival. Audio cues can influence when you advance, whether you prepare a spell or weapon and how cautiously you enter a new space.
This design makes enemy behavior meaningful before combat begins. A player who treats every sound as decoration loses one of the game’s intended warning systems. The result is a slower, more attentive form of tension than simply clearing rooms as quickly as possible.

Revival’s documented emphasis is different
The available Revival material focuses on dual-wielded combat, Genesis Configuration powers, resource-sensitive puzzles and named enemy groups. It does not establish a comparable sound-stealth system. That does not prove that audio is unimportant in the finished game; it means the documented distinction is elsewhere. Revival’s confirmed decision points are what to fight with, what to spend and which puzzle rewards to pursue.
For a player choosing between them, this is a useful boundary. Pick Undying if sound cues and cautious awareness are central to the horror you want. Pick Revival if you are primarily interested in managing a modern survival-horror inventory and integrating a signature supernatural device into combat.
World layout, enemies and boss progression
Revival’s Hellraiser framework
Revival’s documented enemy groups include the Scarlet Church and the Unworthy. Those names indicate that the conflict is organized around Hellraiser-specific factions and mythology rather than a generic haunted-house setting. The Genesis Configuration ties the supernatural identity of the world directly to the player’s actions, so exploration and combat are framed through the logic of the puzzle box.
The available material does not provide a complete area count, enemy roster or boss list for Revival. It is therefore more accurate to describe its structure through the systems Saber has confirmed—puzzles, rewards, dual-wielding and Genesis powers—than to assign it an unsupported map size or encounter total.
Undying’s measured scope
Electronic Arts’ fact sheet gives Undying a clearly defined scope: ten areas, five horrifying boss characters and more than 20 enemies. The story moves through 1920s Ireland, where Patrick Galloway helps Jeremiah confront his reanimated siblings and the Curse of the Undying King. The sibling-focused premise gives the boss progression a personal structure, with major encounters connected to the story rather than appearing as unrelated monsters.
The named weapons and spells reinforce that journey. A player can approach a threat with the shotgun, Molotov cocktails, Tibetan War Cannon, Scythe of The Celt or one of the eight spells, then use exploration abilities such as Scrye or spirit-world flight when the situation calls for them. The world is therefore not just a corridor between boss fights; it is a sequence of haunted locations in which combat, clues and supernatural movement overlap.

Setting, age and expected campaign length
Revival is the contemporary option
Revival is presented for current hardware as a first-person action-horror title, and its official PlayStation page lists a PS5 product edition. Saber’s FAQ estimates “Around 8-12 hours of gameplay, depending on your playstyle.” That is an attributed estimate, not a guaranteed runtime: searching for optional rewards, solving more puzzles or moving more cautiously can change how long a playthrough takes.

The shorter stated range fits the game’s concentrated survival-horror identity. A campaign of that size can keep the focus on the Genesis Configuration, the Scarlet Church, the Unworthy and the resource decisions that connect fights to exploration.
Undying is an early-2000s PC horror FPS
Undying shipped in the Q1 2001 window, with Electronic Arts as publisher and EA Los Angeles as developer according to the official fact sheet. Its age affects expectations. The game’s design language comes from an era when a first-person horror campaign could be organized around a large weapon-and-spell arsenal, broad area exploration and a sequence of major boss quests.
The cited fact sheet does not state a total playtime for Undying, so no direct hour-for-hour comparison is justified. Its documented content count—ten areas, five bosses, eight weapons, eight spells and more than 20 enemies—does show why it can feel more expansive in systems and location variety than Revival’s officially estimated campaign.

Choose Revival’s combat if you value resource tension
- You want a current first-person survival-horror presentation.
- You enjoy deciding when to spend ammunition and crafting supplies.
- You want puzzles to provide concrete combat rewards such as upgrades or a new weapon.
- You like a signature supernatural mechanic that remains available during fights.
- You prefer a focused campaign whose official estimate is around 8–12 hours, with length varying by playstyle.
Choose Undying’s combat if you value tool variety
- You want a classic 2001 PC horror-FPS structure.
- You enjoy switching among eight weapons and eight spells rather than relying on one central device.
- You want supernatural abilities that can damage enemies, reveal clues or enable special movement.
- You appreciate sound as an explicit survival tool and are willing to listen before charging forward.
- You want exploration across ten areas and a story built around five major boss characters.
Revival is the better answer for players who define combat depth as careful spending and system integration. Undying is the better answer for players who define depth as a large, expressive arsenal and the freedom to solve threats with different combinations of weapons, spells, sound awareness and exploration.
How the difference changes a typical play session
A Revival-style decision
Imagine reaching a locked safe after a difficult encounter. You have limited ammunition, a crafting resource that could support an upgrade and a Genesis Configuration power available for the next room. The safe-combination puzzle is valuable because its reward may directly change that calculation. You might spend time searching for the combination, then use the ammunition or upgrade to make the next fight safer. The tension comes from converting attention and time into a better resource position.
An Undying-style decision
Now imagine entering a haunted area and hearing a warning sound before you can see the enemy. Undying’s documented design asks you to treat that sound as actionable information. You might ready the shotgun for a close threat, select a spell with a better match for the encounter, use Scrye to look for hidden story clues or reserve spirit-world flight for a traversal problem. The tension comes from identifying the right tool before the enemy forces the issue.
These examples illustrate why one game should not be described as a modern version of the other. Revival’s key question is how to manage a constrained survival-horror economy while using the puzzle box offensively. Undying’s key question is how to combine a broad supernatural and conventional arsenal with careful listening and exploration.
Final recommendation
Choose Hellraiser: Revival if you want a modern first-person survival-horror game centered on Hellraiser mythology, the Genesis Configuration, practical lock and safe puzzles, and resource-aware combat. Its documented design is compact and tightly connected: exploration can improve your equipment, and the puzzle box is part of the fight rather than a separate story object.
Choose Clive Barker’s Undying if you want a classic first-person horror FPS with eight weapons, eight spells, sound-based caution, haunted-area exploration and five major boss encounters. Its 1920s Ireland setting and Patrick Galloway’s conflict with Jeremiah’s reanimated siblings give the campaign a distinct narrative shape, while abilities such as Skull Storm, Scrye and spirit-world flight make the supernatural system broader than Revival’s single signature device.
