Hellraiser: Revival is a first-person survival-horror game about Aidan entering the Labyrinth to rescue his girlfriend, Sunny. The Genesis Configuration puzzle box opens the route into that realm, where Aidan bargains with Pinhead—the Hell Priest—and confronts Cenobites and other servants of a cult devoted to them. Clive Barker advised on the project, and Doug Bradley returns as Pinhead, making this a new story with direct links to the franchise’s creator and its iconic performer.
What Hellraiser: Revival is about
The game’s emotional engine is simple to state: Sunny is trapped in the Labyrinth, and Aidan is trying to bring her back. The rescue attempt becomes a supernatural bargain. To reach her, Aidan must use the Genesis Configuration, a puzzle box that provides access to the Cenobite world and also functions as a practical tool during play.
This is not a retelling of one of the earlier films. Official announcements describe Revival as a new Hellraiser story that uses the series’ defining ideas—puzzle boxes, Cenobites, the Labyrinth and Pinhead—while giving them a new protagonist and a new objective. Aidan’s decisions and the price demanded by his bargain provide the game’s own narrative focus.

The story setup, step by step
1. Sunny’s disappearance creates the goal
Sunny is not a decorative reference to Hellraiser mythology; she is the person Aidan is trying to save. Her entrapment gives the story a human objective that newcomers can understand without knowing the films. Every supernatural location and confrontation is framed by the question of whether Aidan can reach her and what he will sacrifice to do so.
2. Aidan becomes the player character
You experience the journey as Aidan in first person. That viewpoint keeps the box, the Labyrinth and the Cenobites close to the character rather than presenting them as distant lore. The game therefore teaches its premise through what Aidan must investigate and endure, rather than requiring a chronology lesson before the opening.
3. The Genesis Configuration opens the path
The Genesis Configuration is the story’s access point to the otherworldly domain. In Hellraiser terminology, solving a configuration can open a passage to a realm beyond ordinary human life. In Revival, the box is also part of the game’s practical puzzle design: official developer material places it at the center of puzzles and says it can provide access to powers.
4. The rescue turns into a bargain
Aidan’s route leads to Pinhead, the figure identified in the game’s descriptions as the Hell Priest. Aidan bargains with him in pursuit of Sunny. That bargain is the source of the story’s danger: the objective is not merely to find a door or defeat an enemy, but to decide how much suffering and obligation Aidan will accept for the person he loves.

5. The Labyrinth becomes the destination
The Labyrinth is the otherworldly realm in which Sunny is trapped. It is best understood as a place governed by Cenobite power rather than as a conventional haunted building. The setting gives the game room to move beyond a normal-world rescue scenario while keeping the destination clear: Aidan is crossing into the Labyrinth to find Sunny.

How the lore connects to gameplay
The box is a mechanic, not just a prop
Many horror games place a symbolic object in the background. The Genesis Configuration has a more active role. Its configurations are tied to solving puzzles, and official descriptions connect it with access to powers. That makes the box the bridge between story and interaction: understanding what it is helps explain why Aidan can progress, while using it exposes him to the world he is trying to enter.
Exploration has a supernatural cost
The first-person perspective puts exploration at the center of the experience. Aidan is not touring a museum of Hellraiser references; he is moving through a realm where the objects, inhabitants and rules are connected to the Cenobites. The Labyrinth’s function is therefore both geographical and narrative: it is where the search happens and where the consequences of the bargain become unavoidable.

Threats are broader than Pinhead
Pinhead is the most recognizable name, but the official descriptions also identify cultists, deviants, wretches and infernal priests. Expect the story to place Aidan against a wider network of dangers rather than treating every encounter as a meeting with the Hell Priest. This distinction helps newcomers understand why a scene can belong to Hellraiser lore even when Pinhead is not present.
What is new, and what remains recognizably Hellraiser
Revival has its own protagonist, relationship and rescue plot. Aidan and Sunny are the entry point for this game, while the Genesis Configuration supplies a fresh story hook instead of simply replaying a film scene. The Labyrinth, Cenobites and Pinhead preserve the franchise’s recognizable framework, but the game’s central question is specific to Aidan: what will he agree to suffer in order to recover Sunny?
Clive Barker advised on the project. Barker’s involvement matters because he created the Hellraiser universe and its core concepts, but it should not be confused with a claim that the game adapts a particular novel or movie. The documented description is a new story developed with his advice.

A thematic key: forbidden experience

The line comes from the original Hellraiser movie, not from a newly published line confirmed for Revival. It is useful as a thematic bridge because Hellraiser treats forbidden experience as both temptation and punishment. The Genesis Configuration offers discovery, but opening it also exposes the solver to consequences that ordinary curiosity cannot control.

Do you need to know the movies first?
No. The game’s setup supplies a self-contained starting point: Aidan is the playable character, Sunny is the person he wants to rescue, the Genesis Configuration is the means of reaching the Labyrinth, and Pinhead is the Hell Priest who makes the bargain dangerous.

Prior knowledge can add context rather than unlock basic comprehension. A returning fan will recognize the puzzle-box premise, the Cenobites and Bradley’s portrayal of Pinhead. A newcomer can learn those ideas in the order the game presents them. If you want a compact preparation plan, use this sequence:
- Remember that the Genesis Configuration is a puzzle box capable of opening access to another realm.
- Think of Cenobites as the supernatural beings associated with that realm.

Why the premise works for both newcomers and longtime fans
For a newcomer, the motivation is immediate: find Sunny. The box explains how Aidan reaches the impossible, and the Labyrinth explains where the search leads. Pinhead gives the rescue a negotiable price, while the Cenobites and the other named threats provide opposition.
For an established Hellraiser fan, the same structure preserves the franchise’s signature tension between curiosity and consequence. The Genesis Configuration is recognizable without being merely nostalgic, and Bradley’s return places a familiar Hell Priest inside a new story rather than replaying an old one.
