Buy the digital edition if you want the quickest account-based purchase and do not need a box. Choose the physical retail edition if you value a collectible or resalable package, but understand that its game-key card is a license: the complete game still downloads and the card must stay inserted when you play. Plan for at least 42GB of free space either way. A 256GB-or-larger microSD Express card is the practical storage upgrade for many Switch 2 owners.

How the Switch 2 physical edition works
It is a game-key card, not a complete cartridge
Saber says the Switch 2 editions are available with a game-key card. Nintendo’s explanation of this format is important: the card does not hold the full game. Instead, it provides the license needed to download and use the software. The game is installed on console storage or a compatible microSD Express card.

This means the physical box should not be treated as an offline backup of the game. You need an internet connection for the initial download, and the card must be inserted to launch the installed game. If the card is removed, the console cannot verify the game-key license for play. Keep the card with the case if you plan to move the game between consoles or preserve its resale value.

What the physical format is still good for
- Collecting: You receive a retail package and card rather than only an account transaction.
- Sharing or resale considerations: The physical item can be handled like a retail product, although the card remains necessary to access the installed software and any transfer conditions should be confirmed with the retailer and Nintendo.
- Separate from your account library: Someone using the console still needs the card present to launch the game-key-card installation.
The physical edition therefore changes how you acquire and carry the license, not how much storage the game consumes.
How the digital edition works
The digital edition is downloaded through the Nintendo eShop and associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account. It is the simpler option if you want to buy and start downloading on 8 October 2026, do not need a box, and prefer not to insert a card whenever you play. You still need enough free storage and a reliable internet connection for the initial installation.
Advantages of digital
- Purchase and download without waiting for the physical retail date.
- No card to carry, lose, or insert before launching.
- The software remains available through the purchasing account’s library for redownload under Nintendo’s account rules.
- Switching between installed games is convenient when all of them are stored on the console or microSD Express card.
Trade-offs of digital
- There is no box or game-key card to collect.
- The download is unavoidable, so digital does not solve a slow or capped internet connection.
- The purchase is account-based rather than a separate physical item you can hand to another person.
How much storage does Hellraiser: Revival need?
Use 42GB of free space as the safe planning number before purchasing. Nintendo’s regional listings show 40.6GB in the UK, 41.9GB in Australia, and approximately 42GB in Brazil. Those are regional listing estimates, not a permanent guarantee: patches, downloadable content, or a later eShop update can change the requirement. Check the eShop listing for the region attached to your Nintendo Account immediately before downloading.

The figure applies to both purchase formats because the physical game-key card still causes the complete software to download. The card does not provide a smaller installation.

Internal storage and the right microSD Express card
What the console provides
Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. A 42GB installation therefore takes a substantial share of the usable space; the amount left will be less than a simple 256GB-minus-42GB calculation because the operating system and other system data occupy storage. Other games, screenshots, video captures, updates, and downloadable content further reduce the free total.
If you have a new console with little else installed, the game may fit internally. Owners with an established library should check System Settings > Data Management before buying and after installation.
Why an ordinary microSD card is not enough
Nintendo states that Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. A conventional microSD or microSDXC card that worked in the original Switch is not the correct assumption for Switch 2 game storage. Supported capacity is up to 2TB.
A 256GB-or-larger microSD Express card is the practical recommendation for many owners installing a 42GB game alongside other software. Choose capacity based on your complete library, not this one title alone. A larger card reduces the need to archive games, while a smaller card may fill quickly after updates and additional downloads. The card can hold downloaded software, updates, and DLC; saved games remain in system memory.

Before you start the download
- Confirm that at least 42GB is free in the destination storage.
- Use a microSD Express card, not a standard microSD card.
- Install the card according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions and let the console format it if prompted. Formatting erases existing data on that card.
- Leave additional space beyond the displayed estimate for patches and future downloadable content; no fixed patch total has been established.
Installation steps for each edition
Digital edition
- On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account that will own the purchase.
- Find Hellraiser: Revival and verify the listing’s current storage requirement for your account region.
- Check System Settings > Data Management and confirm at least 42GB is available in the selected storage location.
- Buy the digital edition and start the download. Keep the console connected to the internet until the software finishes installing.
- After installation, launch the game from the HOME Menu. Future updates may require additional free space and an internet connection.
Physical game-key card
- Buy the retail Switch 2 edition scheduled for 30 October 2026 and confirm that the package identifies a game-key card.
- Insert the card into the Switch 2 card slot.
- When prompted, connect to the internet and begin downloading the game.
- Choose internal storage or a properly installed microSD Express card with at least 42GB free.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before launching.
- Keep the game-key card inserted whenever you play. The installed files may remain on the console or microSD Express card, but the card supplies the launch license.
The physical procedure has one extra object to manage, but it does not eliminate any download step.
Physical vs. digital: the decision by priority

Will a save work when switching between physical and digital?
Nintendo says save data remains in system memory and generally works across physical and digital copies for the same user. In practical terms, changing from the game-key card edition to the digital edition should not by itself erase the save, provided you use the same Switch 2 user profile and the software is the same game version.
Do not confuse save data with installed game data. Moving, archiving, or redownloading the software changes where the game files live; it does not ordinarily move the save out of system memory. Before changing storage or users, verify that you are playing under the intended profile and follow Nintendo’s current data-management instructions.
Release timing and what to check at purchase
The two dates are not interchangeable. Nintendo lists the digital Switch 2 release as 8 October 2026, while Saber Interactive’s FAQ says the physical retail version releases 30 October 2026. Retail availability can vary by seller and region, so check the date shown at checkout rather than assuming a physical pre-order unlocks on the digital date.

Storage listings are also regional. The UK, Australia, and Brazil figures differ slightly, and all may change if the eShop listing is updated. The current listing for your account region is the final check before installation.

The download will not start because there is not enough space
Free at least 42GB in the selected destination, then retry. If the console still reports insufficient capacity, remove or archive another download, delete unneeded captures, or select a microSD Express card with adequate free space. Leave extra room for updates rather than stopping exactly at the displayed estimate.
The console does not recognize the storage card
Check that the card is microSD Express. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only. A regular microSD card may physically fit but is not the supported game-storage format. Reinsert the card with the console powered down as directed by Nintendo, and format it only after backing up anything you intend to keep.

That is expected for a game-key card. The card is a license, not the complete game. Keep the card inserted while the download completes and whenever you launch the installed software.

The game will not launch after the card is removed
Reinsert the game-key card. Installation files can remain on internal storage or the microSD Express card, but the physical edition needs the card for license verification at launch.
The listed size changes after purchase
Use the eShop or package requirement shown for your region as the current authority. Nintendo’s displayed regional estimates are 40.6GB, 41.9GB, and approximately 42GB; updates or listing changes can alter the number. Maintain more free space than the minimum whenever possible.
Buying checklist
- Choose digital if you prioritize the 8 October 2026 release, account-based convenience, and no card insertion.
- Choose physical if the box and game-key card matter more than instant access, and accept the 30 October 2026 retail date stated by Saber.
- Budget an internet connection and a download for either edition.
- Reserve at least 42GB before starting installation.
- Use only a microSD Express card for expandable Switch 2 storage; 256GB or more is a sensible starting capacity for a broader library.
- Remember that saves stay in system memory and generally work across physical and digital copies for the same user.
- If frame rate matters to your decision, Saber lists a 30 FPS target on Switch 2.
Performance expectation on Switch 2
Saber lists a 30 FPS target for the Switch 2 version. That is a target, not a guarantee that every scene maintains exactly 30 frames per second, and the available information does not establish additional performance modes or resolution targets. Treat the 30 FPS figure as the stated expectation when deciding whether this version fits your priorities.
