Hell Let Loose: Vietnam can make a coordinated squad feel part of a huge, tense battle, but its obscured sightlines and sudden deaths can make the same match exhausting. It is best suited to players who enjoy slow, communication-heavy tactical play and can accept that locating the enemy may be as difficult as fighting them.

What kind of game is Hell Let Loose: Vietnam?

Developed by Expression Games and published by Team17, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter set during the Vietnam War. Steam lists its release date as August 13, 2026. The North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and US Armed Forces fight in teams of 50, with battles built around specialized roles and coordination rather than quick, easily read skirmishes.

The official feature list describes six maps inspired by real locations, 19 roles, and six game modes. Players can swim, climb, crawl quickly, and drag wounded teammates. The factions also have distinct ways to move and fight, which gives the battlefield its own character.

How do the factions change the fight?

Faction or feature What the official feature list describes What it means in play
US Armed Forces Helicopter support Air mobility adds a different way to move across the battlefield.
NVA Tunnel networks Tunnels give NVA forces their own network for movement and ambushes.
Both sides Patrol boats Waterways are part of the available movement options.

These asymmetries help distinguish the opposing sides instead of making them feel like reskinned versions of one another. They also contribute to the difficulty of reading where a threat might come from: movement routes and concealment are part of the tactical challenge, especially in dense terrain.

What does the game get right?

GamesRadar+ reviewer Joe Chivers praised the scale of the battles, the sound design, and the way roles contribute to the experience. In his PC review, published August 12, 2026 and based on a publisher-provided code, he highlights the contrast between large battles and intense close-range urban firefights. He also notes that weapons have distinct sounds, helping encounters feel grounded and recognizable.

The stakes can make successful encounters satisfying. Chivers put it this way: “Each death packs a greater impact, each kill a stronger sense of victory.” That sense of consequence is central to the appeal: a kill or a hard-won push can feel significant because success depends on more than reflexes.

Why can it feel like a snipe-fest?

The same slow, high-stakes design can become frustrating when enemies are hard to see. Chivers describes approaches in which a player crosses a long stretch toward an objective only to be shot by a sniper concealed in foliage. He also reports being fired on by an unseen enemy at 150–200 meters. Those are the reviewer’s match experiences, not measurements of how often this happens or a guarantee that every match plays that way.

Still, they explain why “snipe-fest” is a fair description of the game’s roughest moments: you may have little warning about where a shot came from, and a death can end a long approach without giving you a clear opponent to answer. Chivers also describes one map experience involving a 500-meter walk to an objective and a sniper he characterized as half a mile away. That is an account of a particular frustrating match, not an average distance or general performance statistic.

When visibility fails, the tactical demand can feel less like careful positioning and more like being punished for moving through terrain you cannot properly read. The review identifies poor visibility and tilted balance among its concerns; it does not establish that every map or match is unfair.

How much does squad communication matter?

A great deal. Chivers’s verdict describes the battles as deeply involving while warning that enjoyment depends on finding a squad with decent microphones. Voice chat helps teammates coordinate movement, roles, and responses to threats; playing without useful communication can make a demanding match harder to follow and contribute to.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • Good fit: Players who want large, tactical battles, enjoy coordinating with a squad, and find uncertainty and high stakes compelling.
  • More difficult fit: Players who want frequent, readable firefights, dislike long approaches, or expect to identify opponents reliably before they are shot.
  • Worth weighing: The faction mechanics, sound, and role-based play can make matches distinctive, but the reviewer’s reported visibility problems may undercut those strengths for players who need clear sightlines to enjoy a shooter.

Steam also linked a Patch 1.6 announcement dated October 7, 2026. The available announcement details do not establish whether that update fixed visibility, performance, or stability issues. GamesRadar+’s PC review is useful for understanding the reported match experience, but it is not a hardware-wide performance test. There is no basis here for promising a particular frame rate or stability on a specific PC.

Verdict

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam has the ingredients for memorable tactical matches: large teams, distinct faction tools, specialized roles, and sound that helps give firefights weight. Its central trade-off is that tension can tip into frustration when poor visibility turns movement into a gamble and squad communication is unreliable. If that uncertainty is part of the appeal, the game has a compelling battlefield to offer; if you want consistently readable engagements, the reported sightline problems are a substantial warning.
