Hell Is Us and Elden Ring both combine melee action with exploration, but they are built around opposite expectations. Hell Is Us is a semi-open, clue-led adventure that removes the conventional map, compass and quest markers. Elden Ring is a vast open-world action RPG where you roam on foot or horseback, uncover secrets and enter large Legacy Dungeons woven into the landscape.
Choose Hell Is Us if you want a focused journey that asks you to observe places, remember clues and decide where to go. Choose Elden Ring if you want a much broader world, mounted traversal, online options and a wider range of weapons, magic and character builds.

Hell Is Us vs. Elden Ring at a glance
| Category | Hell Is Us | Elden Ring |
|---|---|---|
| World structure | Semi-open world designed around discovery without a conventional map, compass or quest markers. | Vast open world with secrets, open regions and multi-level Legacy Dungeons integrated into the overworld. |
| Navigation | Environmental observation, intuition, character and location context, and remembered clues. | Free roaming on foot or horseback, with discoveries leading between open areas and dungeons. |
| Traversal | Sources establish exploration across a semi-open world but do not establish a comparable mounted-travel system. | A spectral steed enables rapid travel and mounted combat. |
| Combat premise | Focused melee action with an ancient sword and a drone against supernatural creatures. | Multiple weapon types, magical disciplines, weapon skills, player-defined builds and mounted fighting. |
| Multiplayer | A Nacon FAQ search result describes a solo narrative adventure without multiplayer or co-op; check current support information before relying on that detail. | Official materials describe online co-op; the current official page lists up to three online players and up to six players in Arenas. |
| Best fit | Players who enjoy inference, atmosphere and a comparatively concentrated melee adventure. | Players who want expansive exploration, build variety, horseback travel and online play. |
The key distinction is not simply that one game is larger. Hell Is Us makes navigation itself the challenge, while Elden Ring makes the world’s scale and layered routes the challenge.
What each game is trying to make you do
Hell Is Us: read the world instead of following a route
Nacon describes Hell Is Us as a third-person action-adventure that combines melee combat and exploration in a semi-open world. Its official product page explicitly removes the standard guidance tools many modern games rely on: there is no map, compass or quest-marker system. That is a deliberate structure, not a missing interface feature. The product description is available on Nacon’s Hell Is Us page.
#1 Best Overall
- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
Instead of selecting a marked destination and following a line, you are expected to notice landmarks, interpret conversations and connect a location with the information characters provide. The game still offers context and nudges. A GameSpot review by Alessandro Barbosa notes that location and character summaries can point you in a direction even though they do not function like conventional quest markers.
Rogue Factor’s Jonathan Jacques-Belletête describes this philosophy as “Player-Plattering,” writing that it is intended to encourage exploration and reflection. His explanation appears in the September 24, 2024 PlayStation.Blog feature. In practical terms, the game asks you to retain a clue, recognize a visual pattern and test your interpretation rather than consult a route planner.
Elden Ring: let scale, surprise and vertical routes lead you
Bandai Namco presents Elden Ring as an open-world action RPG whose secrets are distributed across a huge landscape. Its official gameplay preview highlights large multi-level Legacy Dungeons that are integrated into the overworld instead of existing as disconnected stages. You can leave an open field, discover an entrance or shortcut, and move into a complex interior with its own vertical routes and encounters. The comparison features are outlined in Bandai Namco’s November 4, 2021 gameplay preview.

The PlayStation game page describes travel on foot or horseback and emphasizes that weapons, magical abilities and skills let you shape your preferred playstyle. A spectral steed makes long-distance movement practical and can participate in combat, so exploration and fighting are not separated into different modes.
Elden Ring therefore gives you more physical freedom but less pressure to remember every clue. You can roam until a ruin, enemy camp, cave, map fragment or dungeon entrance catches your attention. The game’s uncertainty comes from not knowing what the next horizon contains, not from lacking a conventional route display.
How exploration differs moment to moment
Finding the next objective
In Hell Is Us, progress often starts with an interpretation. A conversation may identify a person, a settlement or a problem without placing a waypoint on your screen. You then search the environment for the relevant context. This makes a wrong turn part of the intended experience: an apparently unproductive path can teach you what a place looks like, reveal a landmark or clarify which clue you misunderstood.
That approach rewards players who enjoy taking notes mentally or physically, checking room layouts and revisiting areas with new information. It can also create friction for anyone accustomed to a journal that tells them exactly which door to open. When you are stuck, first reread the available location and character summaries, then look for distinctive architecture, environmental changes or objects that match the wording of the clue. The absence of markers does not mean the game has no guidance; it means guidance is indirect.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGameSpot’s review calls the exploration rewarding and compares the experience to classic point-and-click adventures. The reviewer also describes the markerless structure as a refreshing alternative to simply following quest icons. Those are review judgments rather than universal measurements, so your reaction will depend heavily on how much inference you enjoy.

Moving through the Lands Between
Elden Ring turns exploration into a continuous loop of movement, observation and risk. You can approach a visible structure from several directions, ride past an enemy group, search below a cliff or enter a dungeon and emerge somewhere unexpected. The spectral steed compresses travel time and adds a combat option when you choose to engage while mounted.
Its Legacy Dungeons add another layer. The open world may suggest a destination, but the dungeon asks you to understand a dense interior: lifts, balconies, locked doors, alternate paths and shortcuts can connect areas that initially appear unrelated. The result is a combination of broad horizontal travel and concentrated vertical navigation.
Which exploration style is more demanding?
Hell Is Us demands more from your memory and interpretation. Elden Ring demands more from your orientation in a large, interconnected space and from your willingness to investigate optional paths. Neither is automatically “better.” The useful question is whether you prefer solving a directional problem from sparse clues or choosing among many possible destinations.
| Exploration question | Hell Is Us | Elden Ring |
|---|---|---|
| How do I know where to go? | Infer a direction from dialogue, summaries and environmental evidence. | Follow curiosity across a large world and discover routes, landmarks and dungeons. |
| What happens when I get lost? | Reconsider clues and search for contextual landmarks; there is no conventional map or compass. | Ride elsewhere, mark a personal destination or approach the same region from another route. |
| What is the main reward for looking around? | Understanding the world and solving the next piece of a clue-led journey. | Secrets, encounters, items, shortcuts and entrances to optional or major areas. |
| How does movement affect combat? | The available descriptions emphasize semi-open-world exploration and melee encounters. | Horseback travel can flow directly into mounted combat. |
How their combat systems differ
Hell Is Us: a focused melee-and-drone premise
Hell Is Us centers its action on melee combat with an ancient sword and a drone while you face supernatural creatures. That focus supports a deliberate, close-range rhythm: positioning, timing and reading an enemy matter more than assembling a large build from many weapon classes and spell schools.
Reviews agree that the combat aims for weight and challenge, but they identify limitations. GameSpot’s Barbosa criticizes shallow enemy variety and imprecise controls. TechRadar’s review calls the fighting weighty and challenging while noting limited weapon diversity and the absence of customizable character statistics. These are individual critics’ assessments, not objective rankings of every encounter.
The practical implication is that Hell Is Us offers fewer ways to reinvent your character. If you want to master one central melee language, that concentration can make each improvement feel meaningful. If you expect extensive build experimentation, interchangeable weapon categories or deep stat allocation, the restricted toolkit may feel narrow.
Elden Ring: build choice as a core combat system
Elden Ring’s official descriptions emphasize breadth. You can choose among multiple weapon types, magical disciplines and weapon skills, then shape a playstyle around those tools. The same area can therefore be approached through very different combat plans: close-range attacks, ranged options, magic, defensive equipment, status-focused setups or combinations of these categories.

Because the official material describes player-defined approaches rather than one mandatory combat formula, Elden Ring is better suited to experimentation. You can change how you solve a difficult encounter by changing equipment, skills or magical tools, not only by practicing the same sword pattern.
| Combat dimension | Hell Is Us | Elden Ring |
|---|---|---|
| Primary identity | Focused melee action using an ancient sword, supported by a drone. | Action RPG combat built around varied weapons, magic, skills and player-defined approaches. |
| Build flexibility | TechRadar’s reviewer reports no customizable character stats and limited weapon diversity. | Official descriptions highlight multiple weapon types, magical disciplines and skills. |
| Enemy and control criticism | GameSpot reports shallow enemy variety and imprecise controls; these are review opinions. | The supplied official descriptions establish combat options but do not provide a comparative quality verdict. |
| Mounted fighting | No comparable mounted system is established by the available sources. | The spectral steed supports traversal and combat. |
| Best reason to choose it | You prefer mastering a concentrated melee system tied closely to a narrative adventure. | You want to test different weapons, magic and skills against the same world. |
Solo play, co-op and social options
The available Nacon FAQ search result describes Hell Is Us as a solo narrative adventure without multiplayer or co-op. Because that information comes from a search-result extract rather than a fully opened support page, verify the current support information if multiplayer availability is decisive for your purchase.
Elden Ring has an explicit online component in the official descriptions. Bandai Namco’s materials mention co-op, and the current official page lists support for up to three online players and up to six players in Arenas. Online play is therefore part of Elden Ring’s feature set, whereas Hell Is Us is positioned primarily as an individual narrative experience.

Hell Is Us asks you to solve its clues and fights alone. Elden Ring gives you the option to keep experimenting solo or involve other players when an encounter or area becomes a shared activity.
Scope, length and commitment
Do not treat the games as direct length equivalents. TechRadar’s reviewer reports completing a thorough Hell Is Us playthrough in just under 30 hours. That is one reviewer’s experience under one definition of “thorough,” not a population statistic and not a measured comparison with Elden Ring.
Elden Ring’s structure makes playtime especially variable because the world contains optional routes, secrets, large dungeons and multiple combat approaches. The supplied official sources do not establish a matching completion-time figure, so any exact claim that it takes a certain number of times longer than Hell Is Us would go beyond the evidence.
Use the distinction in commitment rather than an unsupported hour count. Hell Is Us is the more concentrated choice if you want a bounded, clue-led campaign. Elden Ring is the more open-ended choice if you want a world you can revisit, routes you can postpone and a combat system you can keep rebuilding around different tools.

Elden Ring
Bandai Namco’s current official page lists Elden Ring for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It also states that the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion requires the base game. Platform, bundle and edition details can change, so check the current Bandai Namco Elden Ring page before purchasing.
The PlayStation listing includes PS4 and PS5 editions and identifies a Shadow of the Erdtree bundle. A bundle is not the same product as the base game, so confirm whether the expansion is included if you want the additional content.
The same Bandai Namco page reports Patch 1.17, dated August 27, 2026. That update date is useful context for a current comparison, but it is not evidence that one game has superior combat balance or performance; the official page does not make that comparative claim.

Which game should you play?
Choose Hell Is Us if you want to…
- Navigate through observation rather than a map, compass and quest-marker route.
- Interpret dialogue, location summaries and environmental clues to decide your next move.
- Play a semi-open, narrative-focused adventure with a concentrated melee-and-drone combat premise.
- Prefer a more bounded commitment; one TechRadar reviewer completed a thorough run in just under 30 hours, though that is not a universal duration.
- Enjoy discovering meaning in a place instead of being directed to a numbered objective.
Choose Elden Ring if you want to…
- Roam a vast open world with secrets spread across open regions and integrated Legacy Dungeons.
- Travel rapidly on a spectral steed and fight while mounted.
- Experiment with multiple weapon types, magical disciplines and weapon skills.
- Keep changing your combat approach rather than relying on one tightly defined melee toolkit.
- Use online co-op or other multiplayer features listed by the official materials.
If you are undecided, use this quick decision test
- Ask whether navigation should be a puzzle. If the answer is yes, Hell Is Us is the closer match. If you would rather have a large world to roam immediately, choose Elden Ring.
- Count how much combat variety you need. A focused sword-and-drone premise points to Hell Is Us; varied weapons, magic and skills point to Elden Ring.
- Decide whether mounted travel matters. Elden Ring explicitly supports horseback traversal and mounted combat. The available Hell Is Us descriptions do not establish an equivalent system.
- Decide whether online play matters. Elden Ring’s official materials include online options. Hell Is Us is described in a Nacon FAQ search result as solo, subject to current-support verification.
- Choose the kind of uncertainty you enjoy. Hell Is Us withholds route guidance and asks you to infer. Elden Ring exposes a huge range of possible destinations and asks you to choose what to investigate.
How to adapt when switching between them
Moving from Elden Ring to Hell Is Us
Do not wait for a marker to appear. Pay attention to proper names, descriptions of places and unusual visual details. When a character mentions a location, identify what makes that location distinct and search for it rather than sweeping the entire world randomly. Keep track of what you have already ruled out so that returning to an area feels intentional.
Also recalibrate your combat expectations. The available reviews describe Hell Is Us as weighty and challenging but criticize control precision and enemy variety. Treat spacing and timing as skills to learn within a narrower system instead of expecting Elden Ring-style build substitutions.
Moving from Hell Is Us to Elden Ring
Accept that not every visible landmark is an immediate objective. Elden Ring’s scale rewards detours, and a path that appears unrelated can lead to a dungeon, shortcut or new combat option. Use the steed to survey terrain, then dismount when a location demands closer inspection.
Experiment early with weapons, magical abilities and skills. The game’s design supports changing your approach, so a difficult fight does not necessarily require perfect execution of your first setup. You can investigate whether a different tool, range or movement pattern better fits the encounter.

Bottom line
Hell Is Us and Elden Ring overlap only at the broadest level: both use melee action to support exploration. Hell Is Us turns the act of finding your way into its defining challenge, withholding conventional navigation aids so that environmental reading and reflection matter. Elden Ring turns exploration into a massive physical playground, combining horseback travel, secrets, Legacy Dungeons and a combat system built for varied weapons, magic and skills.
Pick Hell Is Us for a focused, clue-led solo adventure. Pick Elden Ring for breadth, build experimentation, mounted traversal and online possibilities. The right choice depends less on which game is “better” than on whether you want to solve the world’s directions or roam until the world gives you another problem to solve.
