For a practical starting point in Hell is Us, turn Camera Follow off, set Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5, and keep Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers visible. Game8 recommends those camera and combat-information settings, but they are starting values—not tested guarantees. If combat feels visually busy or uncomfortable, reduce or disable Motion Blur and Camera Shake; if fights are blocking exploration, lower the difficulty or adjust enemy health, damage, or aggression.

The game deliberately has no map, compass, or quest markers. These changes can make movement and combat easier to read, but they do not add conventional navigation aids. Change one option at a time so you can tell whether it improves your own experience.

A sensible starting setup

Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure built around observation, clues, and player judgment. Its semi-open world does not provide a map, compass, or quest markers. The settings below are therefore aimed at two narrower goals: making the camera and combat easier to manage, and reducing visual effects or interface clutter that get in your way. They do not turn exploration into a waypoint-led experience.

Setting Starting point Why you might choose it
Camera Follow Off, as recommended by Game8 Try it if automatic camera behavior feels distracting; restore it if manual camera control is less comfortable.
Movement Lag 0.5, as recommended by Game8 A guide-suggested value to experiment with if camera movement feels floaty.
Rotation Lag 0.5, as recommended by Game8 A guide-suggested starting value for camera rotation response.
Motion Blur Reduce or disable if it obscures the scene or causes discomfort Less blur may make movement easier to read for some players.
Camera Shake Reduce or disable if camera movement makes encounters harder to follow Less shake may improve visual comfort; preference varies.
Enemy Tier Indicator and Enemy Damage Numbers Show both, as recommended by Game8 They provide combat information without requiring you to infer every encounter detail from animation alone.
Difficulty and enemy tuning Lenient, or lower enemy health, damage, or aggression if needed Reduce combat pressure when fights are interrupting exploration.

Game8’s camera values are recommendations from a third-party settings guide, not the result of a platform-wide performance test. Treat them as a baseline to compare against your current setup, not as a universally optimal configuration.

Make camera movement feel more controllable

Test Camera Follow before changing lag values

Camera Follow determines whether the camera automatically follows the character. Game8 recommends turning it off. That may suit you if automatic movement makes it harder to keep the view where you want it during a fight. On the other hand, manual camera control can feel like extra work, especially if you prefer the camera to reposition itself. Try the setting in a familiar encounter, then switch it back if you spend more effort correcting the view than attending to the fight.

Use the lag values as experiments, not a prescription

Game8 suggests setting both Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5. These values may help if the camera seems to trail behind movement or rotation, but the guide does not establish that they improve response for every player, platform, or play style. Change one value, move and turn in a repeatable situation, and decide whether the view feels easier to control. Then test the other value separately. If a change makes the camera feel worse, restore the previous value rather than assuming that a lower or higher number must be better.

Camera response is a control-feel choice, not a graphics-performance setting. A camera that feels snappier to one player may feel abrupt to another. The useful target is a view you can keep oriented without fighting the controls, not a particular numerical configuration for its own sake.

Reduce visual effects that interfere with clarity or comfort

Motion Blur

TechRadar’s review reports that Motion Blur can be reduced or disabled. If fast movement smears details you want to see, lowering the effect is a reasonable first adjustment. Players who find motion effects uncomfortable can also try disabling it. If you prefer the appearance with blur enabled and it does not affect comfort or visibility, there is no need to remove it simply because another player does.

Camera Shake

Camera Shake is also adjustable, according to TechRadar. Reduce it if camera movement during action makes it difficult to keep track of what is happening, or if the effect is unpleasant. You can try lowering it before switching it off completely; the right balance depends on whether you value the added movement or find it distracting. These options affect how the scene is presented, not the game’s navigation system.

Color correction

TechRadar reports a color-correction option among the available adjustments. The review does not establish a single setting that improves visibility for everyone, so use it when the default presentation makes important visual distinctions hard for you to read. Compare the result in the same scene rather than judging from a different area with different lighting. If a correction makes the picture less legible, return to the previous setting.

Keep combat information that helps you make decisions

Enemy Tier Indicator and Enemy Damage Numbers

Game8 recommends leaving the Enemy Tier Indicator and Enemy Damage Numbers shown. These options can make combat feedback more explicit: the tier indicator gives you an additional cue about an enemy, while damage numbers show the result of attacks. They do not make a fight easier by changing enemy behavior, but the information may help you understand what is happening and make choices during an encounter.

Whether to keep them on is personal. If you find the extra information useful, retain it. If numbers or indicators compete with the scene and you would rather read enemies through what you see in the world, try hiding them. Make the choice based on whether the information helps you follow an encounter, not on an assumption that a cleaner screen is always clearer.

HUD Visibility

Game8 describes HUD visibility as a matter of preference. A visible interface can preserve useful information during combat; reducing it can leave a less cluttered view while exploring. You can choose a compromise rather than treating the HUD as all-or-nothing: keep the elements you rely on and remove what you do not. Reassess the choice after playing both exploration and combat, since an interface that feels unobtrusive while walking may be more valuable once a fight begins.

Adjust combat pressure without changing how you explore

TechRadar reports three difficulty presets: Lenient, Balanced, and Merciless. It also reports that enemy health, damage, and aggression can be adjusted. These options change combat pressure; they are not substitutes for a map, compass, or quest markers.

Choose a preset based on what is getting in your way

  • Lenient: A reasonable place to start if combat is preventing you from exploring. It lowers the pressure of encounters rather than supplying navigation assistance.
  • Balanced: Choose it if you want a middle-ground challenge and fights are not consistently stopping your progress.
  • Merciless: Choose it if you want more pressure from combat and are comfortable with a more demanding experience.

Those descriptions identify the reported presets, not a promise about the precise effect each one has on every encounter. If a preset feels wrong, the individual enemy adjustments may let you address the part of combat you find most difficult without changing everything at once.

Tune enemy health, damage, or aggression individually

If an encounter takes too long, enemy health is the most directly relevant setting to test. If incoming hits make fights too punishing, try enemy damage. If the pace or intensity of enemy behavior is the problem, try aggression. TechRadar reports that these attributes can be adjusted, but does not establish exact values or a universally appropriate combination. Make a single change, play through a comparable encounter, and keep it only if it addresses the obstacle you identified.

This approach helps separate different frustrations. A long fight, a fight in which you take too much damage, and a fight whose behavior feels too intense are not necessarily the same problem. Changing one corresponding setting at a time gives you a clearer read on what helped.

Choose automated targeting by comfort and control preference

TechRadar reports an option to automate enemy lock-ons, while Game8 treats target switching as a preference. Consider automated targeting if manually acquiring or switching between enemies is uncomfortable or distracts you from the fight. Keep more manual control if you prefer to choose your target yourself. Neither option is established as a universal improvement, so compare them during a representative encounter and use the one that leaves you feeling more in control.

Change settings in a way that makes the result easy to judge

  1. Pick one problem. Decide whether the issue is camera response, visual effects, interface clutter, targeting, or combat difficulty. Avoid changing unrelated options together.
  2. Record your baseline. Note the current values or take a screenshot of the settings you plan to change. That gives you a simple way back if the adjustment is not an improvement.
  3. Change one setting. Start with a relevant candidate: for example, Camera Follow if camera behavior feels distracting, or Motion Blur if movement looks smeared.
  4. Try it in a comparable situation. Use a familiar encounter or scene where possible. A change is easier to judge when the conditions are similar.
  5. Keep, refine, or revert. If the result helps, leave it in place and move to the next setting only if needed. If it does not, restore the prior value and try another option.

This is especially useful for settings that affect feel rather than provide an objectively correct answer, such as camera response, HUD visibility, and automated target switching. It also prevents difficulty changes from obscuring whether a separate camera or visibility adjustment was useful.

What these settings cannot establish about performance

Reducing blur or shake may make a scene more comfortable or legible, but the available information does not show that any particular value increases frame rate. The official PlayStation page confirms a PS5 release and lists DualSense vibration support, 3D audio compatibility, and PS5 Pro enhancement features. The Steam page identifies the PC version and lists minimum system requirements. Those pages establish platform information and requirements; they do not demonstrate that a camera, HUD, or graphics setting improves performance on every platform.

For that reason, there is no evidence-backed universal graphics preset or platform-specific performance recommendation here. In particular, the cited information does not establish a console performance mode. If your concern is frame rate rather than camera feel or visual comfort, do not treat Game8’s camera values or TechRadar’s accessibility observations as a performance benchmark.

Respect the game’s exploration design

The official Steam description characterizes Hell is Us as a third-person action-adventure with intense melee combat in a semi-open world. It names swords, spears, and axes, and says the player uses a drone. It also explicitly describes exploration without a map, compass, or quest markers. Settings can make it easier to see and control what is in front of you, but the game still expects you to observe the environment, follow clues, and decide where to go.

That distinction is useful when choosing settings. If your goal is a clearer view, reducing visual effects or adjusting the HUD may help. If your goal is less combat pressure, difficulty and enemy tuning are the relevant options. Neither goal requires treating the game’s deliberately player-led exploration as a problem the settings should solve.
