In Hell is Us, treat stamina as both your attack budget and your emergency defense reserve. Use short attack chains, pause to recover, and keep enough stamina to answer a threat with a dodge or parry. Watch enemy wind-ups rather than dashing continuously, and choose a sword, spear, or axe by testing its moveset—not by assuming one weapon is best.

How stamina shapes a fight

A guide to the game reports that stamina is used for light and heavy attacks, dodges, parries, and blocks. That means spending the whole gauge on offense can leave you without the defensive response you need when an enemy attacks. The same guide says incoming hits temporarily reduce the maximum stamina available. These are guide-reported mechanics; the official PlayStation product page describes the game and its weapons but does not publish a stamina formula or combat statistics.

Think of each exchange as a cycle: attack while there is an opening, stop before you are committed to spending every available point, then use the pause to recover some stamina and read the next enemy tell. You do not need to make every opening into a long combo. A shorter attack string that leaves room to defend is a safer default than continuing to attack until the gauge is empty.

Set a reserve before you engage

The HellIsUs.org beginner guide, updated in June 2026, recommends reserving 20–30% of stamina for an emergency dodge or parry. That figure is advice from the guide, not an official threshold, a measured optimum, or a rule enforced by the game. Use it as a starting point if you are learning a fight, then adjust based on whether you can reliably defend when an attack comes in.

If you repeatedly run out of stamina before an enemy’s next attack, shorten your attack chain or stop using heavy attacks so freely. If you finish a fight with a large amount of stamina left and are consistently safe, you can cautiously extend your offense. The goal is not to preserve a fixed percentage at all times; it is to avoid being unable to respond at the moment you need to.

Let stamina recover between attack chains

After an attack string, create a brief pause rather than immediately starting another. The beginner guide specifically recommends allowing partial recovery between combos. Use that interval to observe the enemy, decide whether you need to move closer or farther away, and identify the next wind-up. Treating recovery as part of the combat rhythm makes it less likely that offense will crowd out defense.

When you are hit, reassess instead of continuing the same sequence automatically. The combat guide reports that hits temporarily lower the stamina ceiling, so the amount available to spend may be lower than it was before the hit. Avoid relying on a remembered attack sequence if the gauge or your defensive options have changed.

When to dodge and when to parry

Dodging and parrying solve different immediate problems. A dodge changes spacing: it can help you move away from a threat or close distance. A parry is a timed answer to an incoming attack. The guides describe a successful parry as negating damage and staggering the enemy, creating an opportunity to counterattack. Neither response is a reason to spend stamina without reading what the opponent is doing.

Use a dodge to reposition, not as a default rhythm

The basic combat guide describes dodging as a way to create or close distance and cautions against overusing dashes until stamina runs out. Reserve the move for a threat or a deliberate repositioning choice. If you dodge repeatedly without tracking the enemy, you may spend the reserve you need for the next attack while not improving your position.

Before dodging, ask what you want the movement to accomplish. If the immediate priority is avoiding an incoming threat, move out of its way. If you need to re-establish distance or approach, use the dodge with that positional goal in mind. Then stop and reassess; do not automatically chain more movement just because the first dodge succeeded.

Try a parry when you can read the wind-up

Watch an enemy’s wind-up and practice timing a parry against more predictable attacks. One guide describes the timing as placing your weapon as the enemy’s attack connects; a successful parry is reported to negate damage and open a punish window. The guides do not provide a universal timing window or exact input instructions, so learn the timing from the enemy’s animation and the game’s feedback rather than relying on a specific frame count.

If a parry attempt leaves you taking hits or spending stamina without gaining an opening, return to safer dodges while you learn the tell. Practice parries when you can focus on a readable attack, not by trying to parry every move in a fight. Once a successful parry gives you an opening, take a measured counterattack rather than spending the entire newly available interval on a long combo.

Choose defense based on the situation

  • Choose a dodge when moving away from danger or changing distance is the immediate need.
  • Try a parry when you recognize a predictable wind-up and can time your response as the attack connects.
  • Pause and observe when stamina is low or the enemy’s next move is not clear; attacking or dashing blindly can make the shortage worse.

How to choose between swords, spears, and axes

PlayStation identifies swords, spears, and axes among the weapons used in Hell is Us. Its official product page does not compare their attack speed, reach, damage, stamina consumption, or how safely each moveset returns you to defense. The guide material supplied for this topic also does not establish a category ranking. There is therefore no substantiated universal best weapon to recommend from these sources.

Instead, compare the weapons in your own game using the same practical questions for each one. This is a way to make a decision from what you observe, not a claim that a category has a particular stat advantage:

  • Can you land the attacks you intend to use without spending so much stamina that you lose your defensive reserve?
  • Does the moveset let you stop attacking and respond when the enemy begins a wind-up?
  • Does the weapon feel comfortable for the distance at which you are able to fight safely?
  • Can you use its attacks consistently, including after a dodge or a successful parry?

Try each available type against comparable encounters, paying attention to the result rather than just the weapon name. If one feels difficult to use without exhausting stamina, switch to a moveset that lets you attack in controlled strings and return to defense. A weapon that fits your timing and spacing is more useful than a supposed category winner unsupported by comparative evidence.

Use upgrades and health as part of your combat plan

The beginner guide recommends upgrading a primary weapon and defensive equipment. If you have settled on a weapon you can use without spending your whole stamina reserve, improving that primary choice is a reasonable next step. The recommendation does not establish which upgrade is most valuable, give upgrade costs, or quantify the effect of any particular improvement.

A combat guide also says current health affects the available stamina ceiling, but the official product page does not detail that relationship and the guide does not provide an exact formula. Treat it as a reason to take damage seriously: after losing health, check what stamina is available before attempting the same attack sequence you used earlier. Do not assume a precise conversion between health and stamina or plan around an unverified number.

A practical routine for a difficult encounter

  1. Start by observing. Identify the enemy’s wind-up and wait long enough to see which attacks are predictable. The guides recommend learning tells, but do not establish a complete enemy-by-enemy move list.
  2. Begin with a controlled attack string. Use a short sequence rather than spending the entire stamina gauge. The beginner guide recommends short strings and partial recovery between combos.
  3. Stop and recover. Use the gap after your attack to let some stamina return and watch for the next tell. Do not treat every pause as wasted time.
  4. Answer the next threat deliberately. Dodge if changing distance is the priority; try a parry if you can read the attack and time the response.
  5. Use the opening you earn. A successful parry is reported to stagger the enemy and create a punish window. Counterattack without assuming that the opening makes an unlimited combo safe.
  6. Adjust after a hit or a failed defense. Check your available stamina and shorten the next attack string if necessary. The guide-reported temporary reduction to maximum stamina means the next exchange may not begin with the same capacity.
  7. Review your weapon choice. If your weapon makes it hard to attack and still defend, test another of the named types and compare how reliably you can manage your stamina and spacing.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain

The official PlayStation page describes Hell is Us as a third-person action-adventure in which the player fights supernatural creatures with weapons including swords, spears, and axes, alongside a drone. It identifies a PS5 version and DualSense features. It does not publish combat statistics or weapon rankings. The practical advice about stamina use, parrying, enemy tells, short combos, upgrades, and the suggested reserve comes from guides, not from official combat documentation.

Exact stamina costs, regeneration rates, weapon performance rankings, and patch-specific balance are not established by the sources used here. No precise formula or universal timing window should be inferred from the tactical recommendations. Follow the game’s own feedback as you practice, and base weapon choices on the moveset you can use reliably.
