Hell Is Us is a stamina-management action game, not a damage-race brawler. Attacks, dodges, blocks and parries draw from the same stamina pool, while incoming hits can temporarily lower the pool’s maximum. The reliable approach is to read an enemy’s wind-up, keep enough stamina for an escape, punish recovery windows and remove Haze-linked protection before trying to burn down a host. Dodging works against every documented enemy; parries are a high-reward option rather than a mandatory skill.
How Hell Is Us combat works
In the PlayStation 5 action-adventure, Rémi fights supernatural creatures with melee weapons, a drone and Lymbic abilities because ordinary modern weapons cannot defeat them. The basic combat language is simple—attack, evade, guard or parry—but every one of those actions is constrained by stamina. That shared resource is the reason an apparently successful combo can become dangerous: if the bar is empty, there may be no stamina left for the dodge that the enemy’s counterattack requires.

Stamina is both an attack budget and a survival buffer
Heavy or repeated attacks consume the same resource used for defensive actions. Reviews from TechRadar and HellIsUs.org also report that taking hits can temporarily reduce the available stamina ceiling. In other words, damage does more than remove health; it can make the next defensive decision unavailable. There is no authoritative published stamina formula or frame-data table, so treat the bar’s visible behavior—not an assumed number of hits—as your guide.
A safe rhythm is to begin an exchange with enough stamina for at least one escape, attack during the enemy’s recovery, and stop the combo before the bar reaches empty. Against a group, reserve enough for a second dodge because another enemy may already be winding up off camera.

Controlled aggression can trigger a healing pulse
TechRadar describes a short-window healing mechanic: damage creates particles that form a ring around Rémi, and activating the ring quickly restores some health. The pulse rewards measured offense. It is not a reason to mash attacks until stamina is exhausted; create the ring, disengage if necessary, then activate it while you still have enough stamina to avoid a follow-up hit.
Dodging, guarding and parrying: which defense should you use?
All three defenses are viable, but they solve different problems. Use the dodge as the default when an attack’s timing or hitbox is uncertain, guard when evasion is awkward, and learn parry timing when you want a larger punish window.
| Defense | Best use | Risk and stamina advice |
|---|---|---|
| Dodge | Escaping a known or unclear attack, repositioning around a group, and maintaining distance. | Most forgiving option. Keep a second dodge available in crowded fights and align the camera and directional input with the route you intend to take. |
| Guard | Attacks that are difficult to sidestep or situations in which moving would put you into another enemy’s range. | Check the weapon’s guard-protection rating in the combat information. Holding guard is not a substitute for stamina management. |
| Parry | Turning a precisely timed incoming strike into damage negation and a punish opportunity. | Missing the timing costs health and tempo. No documented enemy requires parry-only play, so learn it after you can survive with dodges and blocks. |
How to dodge consistently
- Watch the enemy’s body and weapon rather than reacting to the first movement. Keep the camera on the attacker so the direction of the threat is clear.
- Leave a stamina margin before committing to an attack string. The margin is especially important when other enemies are present.
- Input the dodge toward a clear lane, not automatically backward. A side or forward angle can move you outside a sweeping hitbox and place you beside the enemy for a recovery strike.
- After the enemy completes the swing, use the recovery animation to land a short attack sequence, then disengage before your stamina is gone.
When to guard
Guard is useful when terrain, a narrow path or overlapping enemies make a clean dodge unreliable. Compare weapons by their stated guard-protection rating rather than assuming every weapon blocks equally. If guarding leaves you with too little stamina to escape the next attack, release it and reposition instead of absorbing a full sequence.

How to read and attempt a parry
Red attack pulses are reported parry telegraphs. Press the parry immediately before the strike connects, not when the enemy first begins to move. A successful timing negates the damage and opens a punish window. Start practicing on a single, predictable attacker; in a crowd, use parry selectively and keep the dodge route available. GamesRadar reports that no enemy in the documented encounters demands mastery of this technique.
Enemy weaknesses and the Haze protection rule
The most dependable “weakness” in Hell Is Us is structural rather than a universal color chart. Haze-linked entities can protect a host, causing ordinary attacks against the host to be unreliable until the linked threat is removed. The PlayStation Blog’s enemy overview explains the sequence: Haze can split after a kill, and the final Haze enters a Protector that must then be defeated. GamesRadar likewise describes bright, linked Haze offshoots shielding a host.
How to break a protected encounter
- Identify the host and its linked Haze threat. Look for the bright or visibly connected offshoots rather than assuming the largest body is the first target.
- Create space. Use a dodge, guard or drone distraction so the host and adds do not strike while you are changing targets.
- Clear the linked Haze entities. Focus damage on the protection source until the link is no longer active. Do not waste a long combo on a host that is still shielded.
- Watch for a split or transfer. After a Haze entity dies, another stage can appear; the final Haze may move into a Protector.
- Defeat the Protector, then return to the host. Once the protective sequence is over, the host becomes a dependable target. Keep stamina for the remaining adds rather than spending everything during the transition.
What the emotional colors do—and do not prove
Grief, Rage, Terror and Elation appear as emotional categories across weapons, abilities, items and enemy presentation. The available authoritative material does not establish a universal rock-paper-scissors damage multiplier for those colors. Do not assume that a color always deals extra damage simply because it appears on an enemy or weapon. Compare a build by its control effect, range, stamina demand and the specific Haze behavior in the encounter.

How many enemy types are documented?
The 2025 PlayStation Blog says, “So that gives us 27 enemies in the game.” A separate HellIsUs.org review describes five Entity types with three tiers each, or 15 variants. Those figures use different counting language; neither source supplies a complete, verified enemy-by-enemy weakness or damage-multiplier table. Treat the Haze protection behavior as the reliable common rule and learn individual attack patterns in play.

Weapon families: speed, reach and impact
The official product description names swords, spears and axes. Reviews add practical distinctions among swords, dual axes, greatswords and polearms. Every family can be upgraded, and glyphs add active or passive effects. There is no single best weapon: the right choice depends on whether an encounter rewards fast recovery, reach, stagger, burst damage or the ability to keep triggering healing pulses.
| Family | Core trade-off | Use it when | Build support to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dual axes | Fast attacks and pressure, but lower impact. | You can stay close, recognize openings quickly and want to build damage through repeated short strings. | Defensive or stamina-support effects help when aggressive positioning exposes you to counterattacks. |
| Greatswords | Slower startup and recovery for stronger individual hits. | You can read wind-ups and punish clear recovery windows without exhausting stamina. | Crowd control, distraction or reach from the drone can cover the slower recovery. |
| Swords | Balanced speed, reach and impact. | You want an adaptable first weapon while learning enemy timing and the Haze sequence. | A glyph or relic that reinforces the encounter’s needed control or defense keeps the balanced profile flexible. |
| Polearms and spears | Reach and safer spacing, with less emphasis on point-blank pressure. | You need to tag a host or add without standing inside every overlapping hitbox. | Use drone distraction or Lymbic burst to capitalize on the distance they create. |
A practical weapon-selection test
- Check how quickly the weapon starts and recovers from an attack. Slow recovery is a liability when several enemies can retaliate.
- Measure the reach and crowd coverage you need for the current area. A longer weapon can prevent an add from interrupting a host-focused attack.
- Watch the stamina cost and defensive safety. A weapon that deals more damage per hit is not better if it prevents your next dodge.
- Examine glyph, relic and drone synergy. Choose control for a slow weapon, stamina or defense support for an aggressive one, and reach or distraction when enemies overlap.
Glyphs, relics, the drone and Lymbic combat
PC Gamer separates Hell Is Us combat into three channels: combo/parry melee, drone combat and Lymbic combat. Lymbic powers are accessed through glyphs attached to weapons, so the melee weapon also determines which utility or burst options are available. Weapons, armor, glyphs and drone modules can be upgraded.

Glyphs and Lymbic abilities
Glyphs add active or passive effects and provide ranged, area or burst tools through Lymbic abilities. Use them to solve a problem that your weapon handles poorly: an area effect can create breathing room for a slow greatsword, while a ranged burst can finish or interrupt a Haze offshoot without standing in the host’s attack range. Because no complete color-damage chart is established, select a glyph for its control, timing and stamina implications rather than for an assumed color advantage.
Relic slots
Rémi can equip one passive relic and one active relic. Treat the two slots as deliberate corrections to the weapon’s weakness. A passive effect can support stamina management or defense for a close-range build; an active effect can provide crowd control, burst or an emergency opening. Avoid choosing both relics for damage if doing so leaves no answer to a crowded Haze encounter.

The drone begins as a distraction tool and can later gain modules that stun or damage enemies. Send it out before a dangerous wind-up to interrupt the sequence, pull one enemy away from a group, or create the seconds needed to trigger a healing pulse. Drone damage is most valuable when it changes positioning or timing; using it merely as a second source of numbers can leave Rémi exposed in melee.
A repeatable encounter plan
- Survey before attacking. Identify the host, linked Haze entities, exits and any enemy that can reach you while your camera is turned.
- Choose the target order. Remove the active Haze protection first. If no protection is present, isolate the enemy with the most dangerous wind-up or the greatest ability to surround you.
- Open with control. Use the drone or a Lymbic glyph to interrupt, separate or stagger rather than spending all stamina on a long melee string.
- Attack during recovery. Land a short combo with enough stamina left for a dodge. Stop when the bar approaches the point at which a defensive action would be unavailable.
- Respond to the telegraph. Dodge when uncertain, guard when the route is blocked, and parry a red-pulse strike only when the timing is familiar.
- Trigger healing safely. If the damage ring forms, reposition first if another enemy is active, then activate the pulse within its short window.
- Reassess after a Haze death. A split or transfer can change the target priority. Find the new Haze stage or Protector before resuming damage on the original host.
What is still not established
Published coverage does not provide authoritative stamina costs, recovery-frame data, exact damage multipliers or a complete enemy weakness chart. That means online claims such as “this color always deals extra damage” or “this enemy can only be parried” should be treated as unverified unless supported by a current in-game test or an official table. The documented, transferable principles are stamina conservation, dodge-based survivability, optional precision parries, and clearing Haze-linked protection.
For a first playthrough, begin with a balanced sword or a reach-oriented polearm, learn to survive with dodges and occasional guards, then add parries and specialized glyph combinations as your timing improves. Once you can read the encounter, switch to dual axes for faster pressure or a greatsword for heavier punish windows without changing the underlying stamina discipline.
