HelixSR can route a compatible game’s FSR 3.1 upscaling interface to NVIDIA DLSS Model E reconstruction on certain AMD GPUs, including handheld hardware. But the claim that it runs faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck has not been demonstrated by a matched benchmark: the early report did not provide comparative frame rates or detailed test settings.

What HelixSR does—and what “DLSS” means here

HelixSR is an unofficial replacement for a game’s AMD FidelityFX upscaler DLL. It takes the color, depth, motion-vector, jitter, and exposure inputs supplied through the game’s FSR 3.1 interface, then runs Model E reconstruction through a custom Direct3D 12 compute implementation. The project describes compatibility with the FSR 3.1-facing API; it does not add native NVIDIA DLSS integration to arbitrary games. The HelixSR project repository describes its implementation and requirements.

That distinction matters: calling the result “DLSS 3.7” can suggest that a game has NVIDIA’s native DLSS support. HelixSR instead uses an existing FSR 3.1 integration as the route for its reconstruction method. Compatibility therefore depends on the game and its rendering path, not just on whether a handheld has an AMD GPU.

Does HelixSR run faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck?

There is not enough evidence to say that it does. The initial report of a lower processing cost than FSR 4 with INT8 did not include comparative FPS figures or detailed test configuration. The available material does not establish a controlled, same-game comparison between HelixSR and FSR 4 on Steam Deck. The report covering the early claim notes the missing comparison details.

HelixSR’s own performance notes are a different kind of measurement. In version 1.4.1, the project reported that rewriting the final downscale pass reduced QSSM Light processing time at 1080p Quality from 2.19 ms to 1.80 ms on AMD BC-250 hardware. That is a project-reported timing for HelixSR itself—not an FSR 4 comparison, not a Steam Deck result, and not an independently verified benchmark. The repository’s version 1.4.1 notes provide the figure.

Community reports about RDNA 2 are mixed. One user said HelixSR appeared worse than FSR 4 at similar performance, but an individual report cannot settle the question either way. The discussion is anecdotal, not a controlled test.

Which games and devices may be compatible?

Game requirements

Early coverage identifies two requirements: the game must use DirectX 12 and already include FSR 3.1. HelixSR replaces the FSR upscaler path; it is not a universal switch that can enable reconstruction in a game without the necessary integration. The report on the initial claim describes those conditions.

GPU and operating-system limits

HelixSR’s version 1.4.1 project information says it targets AMD RDNA 1 and newer GPUs, while Radeon Vega and Radeon VII are not supported yet. Its stated development and testing were on BC-250 hardware under Linux with Mesa RADV in an FSR 3.1 game. The project says other GPUs, drivers, and games are untested.

Linux use goes through Proton and vkd3d-proton, according to the project. Community work on Windows with the ROG Ally X helped with RDNA 3 wave64 shaders, but that does not establish broad validation on AMD handhelds. Compatibility with one handheld or GPU generation should not be treated as confirmation for another.

Valve’s FAQ says games with FSR integration work on Steam Deck, but that general statement does not validate HelixSR specifically. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ addresses FSR-integrated games, not this unofficial replacement.

How HelixSR, FSR 4, and built-in FSR 3.1 differ

Option What it uses What the available evidence establishes
Game’s built-in FSR 3.1 The game’s own FSR 3.1 integration. It is the interface HelixSR requires; the sources reviewed do not provide a controlled comparison of its performance or image quality against the other options.
HelixSR An FSR 3.1-facing replacement that runs DLSS Model E reconstruction through a custom Direct3D 12 compute path. The project reports a BC-250 processing-time improvement in its 1.4.1 notes. No matched Steam Deck comparison with FSR 4 is established.
FSR 4 A separate upscaling option tested in a Steam Deck hands-on report. That report found better image detail in several tested games, with possible power demand and performance trade-offs. It does not compare FSR 4 with HelixSR.

A separate Steam Deck HQ hands-on report illustrates why an upscaler’s processing cost is not the only result that matters. In Spider-Man Remastered, it reported around 90 FPS with FSR 3 Ultra Performance and around 70 FPS with FSR 4 Ultra Performance on its setup. Those figures describe that report’s FSR comparison, not HelixSR. Read the Steam Deck HQ hands-on report for its test context.

What a useful speed comparison needs

A fair test should hold the main variables steady rather than compare a processing-time figure from one device with an FPS result from another. For each option, use:

  • 🎮 WINDOWS 11 WITH XBOX & PC GAME ECOSYSTEM: Runs on Windows 11, providing full compatibility with Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, and other PC platforms—offering a true hybrid experience that blends console-style gaming with PC flexibility.
  • The same game, scene, handheld, power limit, render resolution, and quality preset.
  • The same driver and runtime configuration, including Proton and vkd3d-proton where applicable.
  • Frame time as well as end-to-end frame rate; an upscaler’s own processing time does not by itself show the game’s final performance.
  • Image quality and temporal stability, plus power draw and battery impact.
  • Compatibility and setup effort, since an option that does not work reliably in the target game is not a practical performance win.

The sources reviewed do not supply a controlled three-way test of HelixSR, FSR 4, and a game’s built-in FSR 3.1. Until such results are available, the defensible conclusion is that HelixSR is an experimental alternative for supported configurations—not a proven faster FSR 4 replacement for Steam Deck.
