Choose Hela: Of Mice & Magic if you want a calm open-world adventure designed for solo play or cooperation, with playful backpack traversal, environmental puzzles and shared discovery. Choose A Short Hike if you want a shorter, single-player outing built around reaching a summit at your own pace, meeting characters and wandering through a compact mountain park.
The games share a gentle, nature-focused mood, but they serve different kinds of players: Hela emphasizes cooperative experimentation across a broader world, while A Short Hike concentrates on one self-directed hike and the small discoveries along its routes.

A calm open-world adventure
Hela is presented as a calm, exploration-driven open-world adventure centered on nature, magic, curiosity and small acts that restore harmony. Its design avoids the usual combat-first structure. The point is not to defeat enemies or optimize a battle build; it is to move through a wilderness, investigate what you find and solve problems through cooperation and experimentation.

That framing matters when comparing it with other cozy games. Hela is not simply a walking simulator with decorative scenery, nor is it a conventional action game with a relaxed art style. Its central verbs are exploring, cooperating, experimenting, solving environmental puzzles, gathering ingredients and brewing.

A Northern Swedish-inspired setting
The world draws on the forests and wilderness of Northern Sweden. That influence gives Hela a specific environmental identity rather than a generic fantasy backdrop: the landscapes are intended to feel rooted in northern Scandinavian nature while still accommodating magic and whimsical traversal.
The tone is explicitly wholesome and heartwarming. Traditional combat is absent, so tension comes from navigating spaces, understanding environmental challenges and deciding how to work with another player rather than from managing health, weapons or enemy encounters.
The Froggy Backpack is the signature tool
Hela’s defining traversal device is the magical Froggy Backpack. Preview material describes several uses:
- Gliding through the environment.
- Bouncing from another player’s backpack during cooperative movement.
- Interacting with environmental puzzles that require creative use of movement.
This makes traversal part of the puzzle language. In a typical platforming adventure, movement gets you to the puzzle; in Hela, the movement tool itself can be the thing you must understand. The backpack also gives cooperative play a physical role, because two players can combine their movement rather than merely exploring side by side.
Activities without conventional crafting
Exploration is paired with ingredient gathering and brewing. Those systems support discovery and experimentation, but they should not be confused with a broad crafting tree. The developer states that Hela does not feature crafting systems such as item creation or base building. Expect brewing and environmental interaction, not a workshop-driven progression loop or a house-construction sandbox.

What A Short Hike offers instead
A single-player mountain outing
A Short Hike is a single-player game. Its Steam description asks you to hike, climb and soar through the peaceful mountainside landscapes of Hawk Peak Provincial Park as you make your way to the summit. There is no co-op mode to organize and no shared traversal role comparable to Hela’s backpack bouncing.
That limitation is also the source of its focus. Every movement decision, conversation and detour belongs to one player. The game can be approached as a compact personal excursion rather than a group activity.

The route to the summit is flexible. Hiking and climbing are joined by gliding, swimming and fishing, allowing you to choose how directly you travel and which side paths you investigate. The park is structured around a central goal, but the experience encourages wandering instead of treating the summit as the only meaningful destination.
Along the way, you meet hikers, uncover hidden treasures, fish and swim. Those activities make the landscape feel like a place to spend time in, not merely a corridor leading to the peak. The emphasis is on small discoveries and conversations rather than a large collection of systems.
A shorter, self-contained rhythm
A Short Hike’s structure suits players who want a contained session with a clear destination and plenty of optional diversions. Its appeal comes from choosing your own route, finding little surprises and deciding how much of the park to explore before reaching the top. Hela’s open-world framing and cooperative puzzles imply a broader, more systemic experience, whereas A Short Hike is deliberately intimate.

When Hela is the better fit for a group
Hela is the more natural choice when the activity itself is social. Preview coverage describes both local split-screen and online co-op, while the backpack’s cooperative bounce gives partners a movement task to perform together. You are not merely taking turns with the controller or watching someone else solve a puzzle; the traversal system can require coordination.

One player may test a route or movement technique while the other watches, provides a launch point or tries a different approach. Because the game has no traditional combat, co-op is not about dividing damage roles. It is about jointly reading the environment and using the available movement creatively.
When A Short Hike is better alone
A Short Hike is suited to players who want uninterrupted control of the pace. Its single-player structure means you can stop to fish, talk with a hiker, swim or search for a hidden path without coordinating with anyone else. The summit provides direction, but the game leaves the timing and route to you.
This makes it a strong fit for a quiet, personal play session. It also avoids the practical issues that accompany online or local co-op, such as matching schedules, controllers and connection quality.
Traversal, puzzles and exploration design
Hela: movement as a problem-solving system
The Froggy Backpack gives Hela a recognizable mechanical identity. Gliding changes how you cross space; bouncing off another backpack adds a cooperative timing element; and environmental puzzles ask you to apply those abilities creatively. The result is exploration that is likely to feel playful and spatial: you study a place, test what the backpack can do and adjust your approach.

Because the game is open-world and experimentation is one of its stated themes, the pleasure comes from understanding possibilities rather than following a single prescribed route. Gathering ingredients and brewing add another reason to look closely at the world.
A Short Hike: a toolkit for route choice
A Short Hike’s movement set is broader in a different way. Hiking, climbing, gliding, swimming and fishing let you approach Hawk Peak from several directions and make detours worthwhile. These abilities support a freeform journey, but they are framed around a single-player hike rather than cooperative puzzle execution.
The distinction is useful: Hela asks, “How can we combine movement and environmental interaction here?” A Short Hike asks, “Which path, activity or conversation do I want to follow on the way to the summit?” Both reward curiosity, but their curiosity is structured differently.

Hela’s open-world emphasis
Hela’s open-world presentation suggests a setting intended to be explored across multiple areas and activities. Nature, magic and small acts of kindness form the thematic frame, while puzzles, ingredient gathering and brewing provide reasons to engage with the surroundings. The absence of combat keeps the pacing gentle, but the combination of cooperative movement and experimentation gives the world more systemic interaction than a simple sightseeing tour.

A Short Hike’s compact park
Hawk Peak Provincial Park is organized around a memorable objective: reaching the summit. Optional paths and activities prevent the route from becoming linear, and meeting hikers or finding treasures gives detours meaning. Swimming, fishing and gliding make the park feel open even though the overall experience is more compact and self-contained than Hela’s planned open-world adventure.
The pacing is therefore easier to predict. You can pursue the peak, wander for a while, then return to the main objective. Hela is the better match if you want the world itself to be the long-term focus; A Short Hike is the better match if you prefer a destination-led outing with room to meander.
Platforms and release status
Why Hela’s availability needs checking
Official Hela pages currently give conflicting information. A Steam community update lists a planned launch window of Q4 2026, while the official website displays the message “NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM.” Because those statements cannot both describe the same release status, do not assume that Hela is universally released or that every listed platform is currently playable.
The planned platform list is PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. Before buying or scheduling a co-op session, check the Steam listing and the developer’s current announcements for the date, edition and platform you intend to use. Availability can differ by storefront and may change as launch approaches.
A Short Hike’s established Steam release
A Short Hike released on Steam on July 30, 2019. Its Steam page lists requirements for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. That gives it a settled PC availability profile, unlike Hela’s currently inconsistent official messaging.
Which game should you choose?
Pick Hela when you want shared discovery
- You want to play alone or with another person rather than commit to single-player only.
- You enjoy environmental puzzles that use movement creatively.
- Gliding and cooperative backpack bouncing sound more appealing than a conventional hike.
- You want an open-world setting inspired by Northern Swedish forests and wilderness.
- You prefer brewing and ingredient gathering to combat, equipment crafting or base construction.
- You are comfortable verifying the latest release information before purchasing.
Pick A Short Hike when you want a focused solo outing
- You want a single-player game with no multiplayer coordination.
- You prefer a clear goal—reaching a summit—while retaining freedom to take side paths.
- You enjoy conversations, hidden treasures, fishing and swimming as optional discoveries.
- You want a game with an established Steam release rather than a title whose official availability statements conflict.
- You prefer a compact mountain setting to a larger open-world structure.
A practical checklist before you play
- Decide whether multiplayer is essential. If a friend or family member must join locally or online, Hela is the relevant option because A Short Hike is single-player.
- Choose the movement fantasy. Select Hela for the Froggy Backpack’s gliding, cooperative bouncing and puzzle use; select A Short Hike for hiking, climbing, gliding, swimming and fishing.
- Match the world scale to your available time. Hela is framed as an open-world adventure, while A Short Hike centers on one park and one summit with optional detours.
- Check the current storefront status for Hela. Reconcile the “NOW AVAILABLE ON STEAM” website message with the Steam community update that names Q4 2026 as the planned launch window.
- Confirm your platform. Hela’s planned systems are PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2; A Short Hike’s Steam listing covers Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux.
The key difference in one sentence
Hela is a cooperative-friendly, puzzle-led open-world journey where magical movement and shared experimentation drive the adventure; A Short Hike is a single-player, summit-bound nature outing where freeform routes, conversations and small discoveries define the experience.
