How the survival-horror gameplay works
Heavy Metal Death Can is designed around the constraints associated with PS1-era survival horror rather than an over-the-shoulder action format. Exploration and investigation are as important as combat.
- Fixed camera angles: Framing limits what can be seen and builds tension as rooms and corridors are revealed from controlled viewpoints.
- Tank controls with modern options: The traditional movement style is present, while newer control choices are available for players who prefer a less rigid approach.
- Scarce ammunition: Supplies are deliberately limited; the game’s official feature description emphasizes that every bullet counts.
- Inventory management: Players must decide which supplies, clues and tools are worth carrying when space and resources are under pressure.
- Improvised keys and investigation: Progress depends on finding makeshift ways to open routes, interpreting clues and examining the submarine rather than simply defeating enemies.
- Enigmatic keepsakes: Strange objects found during exploration contribute to the mystery and the game’s investigative atmosphere.
The resulting loop is to explore dangerous sections of the submarine, conserve ammunition, manage a restricted inventory, solve access problems and determine whom to trust. The presentation deliberately avoids constant combat or unrestricted visibility: “Fixed Cameras. Real Tension. No handholding. No over-the-shoulder comfort. Your fear is earned.”

Visual and audio style
The visual direction reworks vibrant late-1990s horror and adventure-game backdrops with modern rendering technology. That approach pairs colorful, stylized environments with the claustrophobia of a submerged military vessel.
Audio combines distorted guitar, analog synthesizer and unsettling silence. The soundtrack’s shifts between abrasive music and quiet are intended to make empty corridors and unseen movement feel threatening, even when no enemy is immediately visible.

Who should play it?
Heavy Metal Death Can is aimed at players who prefer deliberate, resource-conscious survival horror: fixed viewpoints, limited ammunition, environmental investigation and an oppressive setting. It is a better fit for someone seeking tension and uncertainty than for someone looking for a continuous third-person shooter with plentiful supplies.
The submarine setting also gives it a distinctive identity. Instead of a conventional mansion, town or open facility, the game confines its mystery to a Cold War-era vessel beneath the Norwegian Sea, where narrow spaces, unreliable allies and the Sludge outbreak reinforce one another.
