Heat-pump dryers can use substantially less electricity than conventional electric-resistance dryers, but the savings on your bill depend on the models, how often you dry laundry, and your electricity rate. ENERGY STAR estimates certified heat-pump dryers use around 70% less energy than conventional clothes dryers; a 2022 U.S. Department of Energy guide gives a broader 20–60% savings range. Treat both as published estimates, not a guarantee for every household. A heat-pump model may cost more to buy, so compare its energy use and verified purchase-price difference before deciding.

How the two dryer types use energy

Conventional electric dryers

A conventional electric-resistance dryer heats incoming air, tumbles clothes, and exhausts warm, moist air through an exterior vent. Electricity powers both the heating element and the drum and blower motors. This article uses that electric dryer as the main comparison baseline; gas dryers use a different heat source, so their operating costs depend on local gas and electricity prices. The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes electric and gas dryers in its consumer clothes dryer guidance.

That distinction matters when you compare advertised savings. The quoted ENERGY STAR and DOE estimates are broad comparisons with conventional clothes dryers, but a buyer should identify the actual dryer type and model being replaced. If your current dryer is gas, an estimate based only on electricity use will not capture the full operating-cost comparison: the gas charge matters too. Do not assume the electric-resistance comparison is an exact prediction for a gas-to-heat-pump switch.

Heat-pump dryers

A heat-pump dryer recirculates air through a closed system. A condenser removes moisture from the air, and the resulting water is drained away or collected in a tank, depending on the model. The dryer recovers heat rather than continually exhausting it outdoors. ENERGY STAR says of this design, “There is no need for a dryer vent.” That can make installation easier where an exterior vent is impractical, but check the individual model’s drainage or tank instructions.

Midea Heat Pump Ventless Front Load Dryer Stackable 4.4 Cu.ft White
  • 240V Heat Pump Dryer - The Heat pump dryer does not require ventilation, making it easy to install. It also reduces energy use by at least 28% compared to standard dryers while drying laundry at low temperatures, so they are gentler on clothes. 【Power cord should be purchased seperately and voltage requirement: 240V.】
  • Ventless / Stackable Dryer - No ventilation is required, so that the dryer can be installed next to the washer or stacked. With its compact size of 24", the unit can be installed in a small space.
  • Dry Smart - Humidity sensor measures moisture levels to adjust drying time automatically. Dries your clothes to your desired dry level, preventing over drying.
  • Reduce Wrinkles by Tumbling - Wrinkle Care provides approximately 90 minutes of intermittent tumbling in unheated air at the end of the cycle to reduce wrinkling. The load is already dry and can be removed anytime during the Wrinkle Care cycle.
  • ENERGY STAR Qualified - Meets or exceeds federal guidelines for energy efficiency to save money and energy.

The difference in how heat is used helps explain the energy gap: a heat-pump dryer reuses heat and does not send the same stream of warm air outside. It does not mean every heat-pump model will beat every conventional model by the same percentage; capacity, cycle choices, laundry loads, and product efficiency matter.

The moisture still has to be handled even though there is no exterior dryer vent. Depending on the product, water may need to be routed to a drain or emptied from a collection tank. The reviewed guidance does not specify one connection arrangement for all models, so treat drainage and tank-emptying as model-specific ownership details rather than assuming all heat-pump dryers install the same way.

How much energy can a heat-pump dryer save?

ENERGY STAR’s current clothes-dryer guidance estimates that certified heat-pump dryers use around 70% less energy than conventional clothes dryers. The Department of Energy’s 2022 Energy Saver guide describes potential savings of 20–60% compared with conventional dryers. These figures have different wording and framing, so they should not be combined into a single promised savings rate. They are useful as broad comparisons, while the model’s annual energy estimate is more relevant to a purchase decision.

In other words, neither percentage should be treated as a guaranteed bill reduction for one buyer. The actual result depends on which two models are compared, the household’s number of loads, and the electricity rate. The estimate may also be a poor fit if a model’s capacity does not suit the loads you normally dry or if your pattern of use differs from the assumptions behind the product estimate.

ENERGY STAR’s certified-dryer listing provides model-level estimated annual electricity use and capacity. For example, the listing includes the LG DLHC4002* at 7.8 cubic feet and 257 kWh per year, and the compact Bosch WQB245AXUC at 3.9 cubic feet and 122 kWh per year. These are examples from the listing, not a matched comparison: the capacities differ, and the figures do not establish how either model compares with a particular conventional dryer in your home. Product listings and specifications can change, so confirm current details in the ENERGY STAR certified clothes-dryer database.

The Bosch example has a lower annual kWh figure, but it is also a smaller-capacity model than the LG example. It would be misleading to infer that it will use less electricity for the same household’s laundry without considering whether its capacity fits the job. When you compare products, look at annual kWh and capacity together, and make sure the listing refers to the precise model you are considering. The examples illustrate how to read a listing; they are not endorsements or a direct head-to-head comparison.

Estimate your electricity cost and savings

To estimate annual electricity cost for a specific model, multiply its annual kWh estimate by your electricity rate in dollars per kWh. Then subtract the heat-pump model’s estimated annual cost from the conventional model’s. Use the same electricity rate for both calculations if both dryers run on electricity under the same tariff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example calculation: If a model is estimated to use 257 kWh per year and your electricity rate is $0.20 per kWh, the estimated annual electricity cost is 257 × $0.20 = $51.40. This illustrates the arithmetic, not a prediction for a specific household or a claim about the other example model. Use the rate on your bill and the annual kWh figures for the exact dryers you are considering.

For a full comparison, do the same calculation for the conventional model. If its annual estimate is represented as conventional kWh, the calculation is: conventional kWh × your rate = estimated annual electricity cost. Then compare that result with the heat-pump model’s estimated annual cost. The difference is an estimate of yearly electricity-bill savings, not a promise that the bill will fall by that amount; the model estimates and your own load pattern determine how closely it reflects your use.

For an estimate that reflects your household, account for how many loads you dry and whether your use is likely to match the model’s published assumptions. ENERGY STAR notes that households that run dryers frequently, and households with high electricity rates, have greater potential for energy and cost savings. A lower kWh figure is not enough by itself to establish your bill reduction if the capacity or use pattern differs.

Use the electricity price that applies to your household, rather than a general national price. If you are comparing electric models on the same utility tariff, applying the same rate makes the calculation straightforward. For a gas dryer comparison, include local fuel costs as well as electricity used by the appliance; the reviewed sources do not provide one universal gas operating-cost figure.

Compare lifetime cost, not only the sticker price

The purchase price and the energy bill are separate parts of the decision. ENERGY STAR describes these as the product’s initial cost and its lifetime energy-to-operate cost. Its 2024 certified-washers-and-dryers factsheet estimates that certified heat-pump dryers can save more than $500 in electricity costs over the product lifetime. That is an ENERGY STAR estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual buyer.

Current national retail prices and a universal purchase-price premium are not established by the sources cited here. Nor is there a single payback period that applies to all buyers. To assess whether a higher upfront price makes sense, compare the actual prices of dryers that meet your capacity needs, calculate estimated annual electricity costs, and factor in any confirmed rebate and installation-cost difference.

A useful comparison separates four items rather than relying on a single efficiency percentage: what each dryer costs to buy, what each is estimated to use in a year, the household’s electricity rate and expected number of loads, and any verified difference in installation or rebate cost. A heat-pump dryer’s lack of an exterior vent may avoid the need to add one, but the reviewed sources do not quantify that potential installation saving. Do not assign it a dollar value without an actual quote.

  1. Find the annual kWh estimate for the heat-pump model and the conventional model you would realistically buy.
  2. Check that the models have suitable capacities for the loads you typically dry, so you are not comparing a compact appliance with a larger one as if they were interchangeable.
  3. Multiply each annual kWh figure by your electricity rate to estimate annual electricity cost.
  4. Subtract the heat-pump model’s annual cost from the conventional model’s to estimate yearly bill savings.
  5. Compare the actual purchase-price difference, adjusted for any confirmed rebate or installation-cost difference, with the estimated yearly savings. This gives a household-specific comparison, not a universal payback promise.

The result is only as reliable as the product estimates and your household’s load pattern. It will also change if electricity rates, usage, or the compared models change. If a rebate is uncertain, calculate the comparison both with and without it, and do not count a maximum advertised incentive as a discount until you confirm that you qualify and it is available.

Installation, capacity, and everyday fit

Venting and moisture handling

Because heat-pump dryers do not exhaust moist air through an exterior dryer vent, they may suit spaces where adding a vent would be difficult. Condensed water must still go somewhere: depending on the model, you may connect a drain or empty a collection tank. The cited guidance does not establish a single connection requirement for every product, so check the installation instructions for the model you choose. These sources do not quantify the cost avoided by not installing a new exterior vent.

Conventional vented dryers, by contrast, send moist air outside through their vent. If you are replacing an existing dryer, compare the installation situation you actually have: an available exterior vent, the heat-pump model’s water-handling configuration, and any additional work required. The research supports the difference in venting approach, but does not set out model-specific electrical, plumbing, clearance, or other connection requirements. Verify those in the product documentation rather than assuming the general technology description covers every installation detail.

Capacity and cycles

Compare capacity with the loads you normally dry, not only the dryer’s energy figure. A compact model may have a lower annual kWh estimate because it is smaller; that does not make it a like-for-like replacement for a larger dryer. Check the exact model’s capacity and annual energy estimate, then consider its cycle time and features. Those details vary by product, so there is no one cycle-time comparison that applies to all heat-pump and conventional dryers.

Capacity is a practical requirement, not just a specification to scan past. Start by identifying the kinds of loads you expect the machine to handle, then compare products with a capacity that suits them. Only after narrowing the choices this way should you compare the annual kWh figures. The cited listing examples—7.8 cubic feet for the LG DLHC4002* and 3.9 cubic feet for the Bosch WQB245AXUC—show why size needs to be considered alongside energy use. The listing does not establish that one is a direct substitute for the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cycle time and features can also matter to your routine, but the reviewed sources do not support a universal statement that one dryer type always finishes faster or slower. Check the specifications and cycle information for the individual products. Treat energy use, capacity, cycle time, and features as separate comparison axes rather than assuming a single category label tells you how a dryer will fit your household.

Rebates and how to check eligibility

The Department of Energy’s current Home Upgrades guidance describes potential rebates of up to $840 for qualifying ENERGY STAR certified heat-pump dryers through a specific program. “Up to” is a maximum, not an amount every buyer will receive. The available incentive and eligibility depend on location and program rules, and availability can change. Use the Department of Energy Home Upgrades guidance and ENERGY STAR’s dryer listing and rebate finder to check current local details before subtracting a rebate from the purchase price.

Confirm the exact product and program requirements before you budget around an incentive. A program’s maximum amount is not proof that a particular model, buyer, or location qualifies, and listings or program availability can change. If you cannot verify the amount and eligibility, compare the dryer prices without the rebate first; then treat any confirmed incentive as a reduction to the upfront cost.

When a heat-pump dryer is likely to make sense

  • You run many loads or pay a high electricity rate: more use or a higher per-kWh price increases the potential value of lower electricity consumption.
  • You want to avoid an exterior vent: the closed-loop design can be useful where venting is difficult, provided you can manage the model’s condensate drain or tank.
  • You can verify an incentive: a qualifying, available rebate can reduce the upfront difference, but confirm the rules before relying on it.
  • You need a specific capacity: compare models that can handle your usual loads; a smaller dryer’s annual kWh figure is not automatically a fair comparison with a larger machine.
  • You are willing to make a model-specific cost comparison: use actual product prices and annual kWh estimates rather than relying on a broad percentage or a generic payback claim.

A conventional electric dryer may remain the practical choice when its purchase price, capacity, installation, and expected use better fit your circumstances. Make the decision using the actual models and local costs rather than assuming a savings percentage will translate directly into a particular payback.

A practical comparison checklist

Before choosing, gather the same information for each model you are seriously considering. Verify model numbers and ENERGY STAR status in the current listing, note annual kWh and capacity, and compare the products’ actual purchase prices. Then use your electricity rate and expected use to estimate annual operating cost. If you are replacing a gas dryer, account for local gas prices in the operating-cost comparison instead of treating the electric-resistance baseline as an exact match.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much energy does a heat-pump dryer use?

It depends on the exact model. ENERGY STAR’s listing reports estimated annual kWh for individual dryers; examples in the cited listing include 257 kWh/year for the 7.8-cu.-ft. LG DLHC4002* and 122 kWh/year for the 3.9-cu.-ft. Bosch WQB245AXUC. These examples differ in capacity and are not a like-for-like comparison. Check the current listing for the model you are considering.

Do heat-pump dryers save money?

They can, particularly in households that dry many loads or pay higher electricity rates, but the result depends on use, the specific models, electricity price, purchase-price difference, and any installation costs. ENERGY STAR estimates certified heat-pump dryers can save more than $500 in electricity costs over the product lifetime, but that is an estimate rather than a guaranteed household result. Calculate annual costs for the exact models before deciding.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are heat-pump dryers ventless?

They do not exhaust moist air through an exterior dryer vent. They recirculate air and remove moisture through a condenser. The resulting water is drained or collected in a tank depending on the model, so check its installation instructions for the required arrangement.

How do I calculate the electricity cost of a dryer?

Multiply the model’s estimated annual kWh by your electricity rate in dollars per kWh. To estimate savings, subtract the heat-pump model’s annual electricity cost from the conventional electric model’s annual cost. The result is an estimate, and it is only as relevant as the product usage estimates and your household’s load pattern.

Is the DOE rebate of up to $840 available to everyone?

No. The Department of Energy describes potential rebates up to $840 for qualifying ENERGY STAR certified heat-pump dryers through a specific program. The amount, availability, location, and eligibility rules matter. Check current DOE guidance and ENERGY STAR’s rebate finder before counting an incentive toward the purchase price.

Are heat-pump dryers cheaper to run than gas dryers?

The cited energy-savings comparison is not a guaranteed gas-to-heat-pump cost comparison. Gas dryers use a different heat source, and their operating costs depend on local gas and electricity prices. Compare the actual models and account for both applicable utility costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Heat-pump dryers offer a meaningful potential reduction in energy use, and their vent-free moisture-removal design can suit spaces where an exterior vent is difficult. But the savings are not one-size-fits-all. Compare the current annual kWh estimates and capacities of models that fit your laundry, apply your local utility rate, and include only verified rebates and installation costs. That model-by-model calculation—not a broad savings percentage alone—is the soundest way to decide whether the higher upfront price, if any, makes sense for your household.
