Neither is universally better. Heart-rate-monitoring earbuds can be a sensible choice if you already wear earbuds and want workout heart rate without a wrist device. A fitness watch is a stronger fit if you want a wrist display, workout logging, or other watch functions. For either option, fit, movement, conditions, and phone compatibility can affect the experience—and available evidence does not establish that today’s earbuds are more accurate than today’s watches.

What matters most when choosing

Start with how you want to wear and use the device, not with the assumption that one sensor location is automatically more accurate. Earbuds and watches measure heart rate optically, but their readings can be affected by contact, movement, and individual factors. The evidence here does not provide a controlled, current head-to-head comparison of heart-rate-monitoring earbuds and fitness watches.

In practice, the choice comes down to four questions: Will the device fit securely during your workouts? Can you see or record the workout data in the app or on the device you use? Does your workout involve movements or conditions that may make readings less consistent? And would you rather avoid a wrist device, or have one available during exercise?

Wear and sensor contact Requires a suitable earbud fit and contact between the sensor and skin. The documented AirPods Pro 3 workout feature uses supported Apple devices and apps. The optical sensor needs close contact with the wrist; Apple advises a snug watch fit for workouts.
Seeing workout data Heart rate is available through supported workout apps on a compatible phone or tablet. The documented Apple setup does not describe a wrist display. May provide a wrist display and workout recording, depending on the watch model and its ecosystem.
Fit and conditions Apple identifies poor contact, cold, moisture, earwax, piercings, and individual variation in skin blood flow as possible factors. Movement, cold, skin perfusion, some tattoos, and fit can affect wrist readings, according to Apple.
Evidence about accuracy No current direct comparison with current fitness watches establishes a winner. A 2024 review found variation across devices, activities, and individuals; it does not establish one watch as best for everyone.
Most natural fit Someone who already wants earbuds and prefers not to wear a wrist device. Someone who wants workout logging, a wrist display, or broader watch functions.

How sensor fit and movement affect readings

Earbuds depend on stable contact in the ear

For an in-ear optical sensor to work as intended, it needs appropriate contact with skin. Apple says AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate readings can be affected by poor contact, cold, moisture, earwax, piercings, and individual differences in skin blood flow. A comfortable earbud fit alone does not guarantee the sensor is positioned correctly.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Apple also notes that the ear-tip size that gives the best acoustic seal may differ from the size that provides proper heart-rate sensor contact. If workout data appears as dashes or is dimmed, poor contact is one possible explanation. Check fit and sensor contact rather than assuming the app or the workout itself is at fault.

Watches need a snug wrist fit

Apple advises that the watch sit snugly on top of the wrist during a workout so the sensor maintains close contact. A loose fit can compromise that contact; tightening the band enough to stabilize the watch is a practical first check when readings are erratic. The advice is specific to Apple Watch, and other watch models may have their own fit guidance.

Apple lists cold, reduced skin perfusion, some tattoos, and movement as factors that can affect wrist-based readings. Garmin’s support guidance also notes inherent limitations in wrist optical heart-rate technology and recommends choosing the activity profile that best matches the workout. That guidance supports treating wrist readings as conditional measurements, not assuming that every watch behaves identically.

Workout motion is part of the comparison

Apple says rhythmic movements such as running or cycling tend to produce better Apple Watch results than irregular movements such as tennis or boxing. This is not a guarantee that every run will read correctly or that every racket-sport reading will fail. It is a reason to judge a device in the context of the movement you actually do, rather than relying on a single workout or activity type.

The same caution applies to earbud readings: Apple lists environmental and fit factors, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable ranking between ear and wrist sensors across different sports. If your workout involves frequent changes of direction, striking, or other irregular movement, treat the possibility of inconsistent readings as a decision factor for either optical option.

What the accuracy evidence does—and does not—show

A 2024 review in Quality in Sport described 29 peer-reviewed studies involving more than 900 participants. Its abstract concluded that smartwatch accuracy varied by device, activity, and individual factors. That is useful evidence against treating “fitness watch” as a single, consistent measurement category; it is not a direct test of current heart-rate-monitoring earbuds against current watches.

A separate American College of Cardiology summary of a 2024 study by Quinn and colleagues covered 81 participants, of whom 65% were female and 25% had atrial fibrillation. The study compared six older photoplethysmography-based wearable devices with ECG during treadmill exercise. At peak exercise, the reported mean absolute difference from ECG was 13.8 beats per minute for participants in sinus rhythm and 28.7 beats per minute for participants with atrial fibrillation. The devices included older models and Jabra Sport pulse headphones; these figures are study-specific and should not be used to predict the accuracy of current earbuds or watches.

The ACC summary said that readings from commercially available monitors differed meaningfully from participants’ true heart rates, with the largest differences among participants with atrial fibrillation. The treadmill setting, device generation, and participant characteristics matter when interpreting that result. It highlights why consumer exercise readings should not be treated as a clinical measurement, but it cannot settle which current product category is more accurate.

For a buyer, the defensible conclusion is narrower than a product ranking: fit and activity matter, and the available sources do not prove that one of these categories wins across devices and users. If dependable heart-rate data is more important than avoiding a wrist device, consider whether you are willing to use an external chest strap when optical readings are inconsistent.

How the documented AirPods Pro 3 workout setup works

Apple documents in-ear heart-rate sensors for workouts on AirPods Pro 3. Workout heart rate can be used through Fitness on iPhone, Apple Fitness+ on supported Apple devices, or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad. This is a specific Apple feature and setup path, not a claim that every heart-rate-monitoring earbud works with every phone or training app.

  1. Confirm the device and app combination. Use AirPods Pro 3 with a supported Apple device and a workout app that can access the heart-rate feature. For a third-party app, Apple says it needs permission to read heart-rate data and workout records.
  2. Check earbud fit and sensor contact. Try the fit that keeps the heart-rate sensor in suitable contact with your ear. Do not assume that the ear tip that gives the best acoustic seal is automatically the best choice for heart-rate contact.
  3. Start the workout in the app. Heart rate is surfaced through Fitness, Apple Fitness+ on supported Apple devices, or a supported third-party workout app on iPhone or iPad.
  4. Check the displayed data during exercise. Dashes or dimmed readings can indicate that usable heart-rate data is not available at that moment. Recheck contact and consider whether cold, moisture, earwax, or a piercing may be affecting the sensor.

If you wear both an Apple Watch and AirPods Pro 3, Apple says the system uses whichever heart-rate source has the highest confidence at that moment. That behavior may make the data source change during use; it is not independent evidence that one sensor is more accurate overall.

When a fitness watch is the better practical choice

A watch is the more straightforward fit if you want to check a display on your wrist while exercising, record a workout on the wearable, or use functions beyond heart-rate monitoring. The exact workout features and phone compatibility depend on the watch model and ecosystem; do not assume that all watches work the same way with every phone.

Before choosing one, check its compatibility with your phone and preferred workout app, how it records the activities you do, and whether its on-device display gives you the information you want during training. For wrist readings, follow the model’s fit guidance. Apple’s published advice is to wear Apple Watch snugly on top of the wrist during a workout.

A fitness watch may still be an inconvenient choice if you dislike wearing something on your wrist or if its display and other functions are not useful to you. The category’s wider feature set only matters if you will use it; it does not by itself establish better heart-rate accuracy.

When heart-rate-monitoring earbuds are the better practical choice

Earbuds make the most sense if you already wear them during exercise, want heart rate without a wrist device, and can use the necessary phone, app, and fit combination. The documented Apple example requires an iPhone or iPad workout-app path, with third-party app permissions where applicable. Those requirements are part of the purchase decision, not an afterthought.

Check that the earbuds remain comfortable and seated during the movements in your workouts, and that you can access the heart-rate data in the app you intend to use. If you do not use a compatible device or app, or cannot achieve reliable sensor contact, the convenience advantage may disappear. Apple’s specific instructions should not be generalized to other earbud models without their own documentation.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose earbuds if: you already wear earbuds to work out, want to avoid a wrist device, and your phone and workout app support the feature on the model you are considering.
  • Choose a watch if: you want a wrist display, workout recording on the wearable, or broader watch features, and the model fits your phone and app setup.
  • For either option: check fit, sensor contact, and the activity conditions that may interfere with optical readings.
  • If readings are inconsistent: first address fit and setup. For Apple Watch, Apple says a Bluetooth chest strap can be connected as an option when readings are not consistent.
  • If heart rate is being used for a health decision: do not treat a consumer workout reading as a diagnosis or substitute for clinical measurement.

Common problems and what to check

Heart rate is missing or appears as dashes

For the documented AirPods Pro 3 setup, check whether the earbuds are seated with appropriate sensor contact, whether the workout app is supported, and—for third-party apps—whether it has permission to read heart-rate data and workout records. Cold, moisture, earwax, and piercings are among the factors Apple says may affect earbud readings.

Watch readings vary from one workout to another

Check that the watch is snug and in close sensor contact. Then consider whether the workouts differ in movement or conditions: Apple identifies cold, skin perfusion, some tattoos, and motion as possible influences, and says rhythmic running or cycling tends to produce better results than irregular tennis or boxing movement.

The reading does not match how the workout feels

Do not assume that a displayed number is a clinical-grade measurement. Optical readings can vary with device, fit, activity, and individual factors; a mismatch is a reason to check fit and context, not enough by itself to establish which device category is wrong. If you need a measurement for a medical concern, use clinical guidance rather than relying on workout data.

How to make a fair real-world comparison

If you are deciding between two devices you already own or can try, compare them under similar conditions rather than judging one from a single session. Use the activity you care about, ensure each device is seated as its maker advises, and note whether the workout app is actually recording and displaying the data you want. A comfortable fit, stable contact, and compatible app setup are part of the experience—not minor details separate from the sensor.

Pay attention to repeatability across more than one kind of workout, especially if your training includes both rhythmic exercise and irregular movement. If a watch reading changes during tennis, for example, that is consistent with Apple’s caution about irregular movement; it does not prove that an earbud will be accurate in the same session. Likewise, one smooth run cannot establish a device’s accuracy for every person or activity.

When you wear both AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch, Apple’s system selects the source it considers highest confidence at a given moment. That may be useful in the combined setup, but it also means the displayed data need not come from the same sensor throughout a workout. Do not treat switching sources as a side-by-side validation or as proof of a category-wide winner.

Consider what you need the number for. For a general workout log or a convenient view of exercise data, a consumer wearable may meet your needs. For medical decisions, symptoms, or a clinical assessment, these workout readings are not a substitute for professional guidance or clinical measurement. The ACC’s 2024 summary of a treadmill comparison with ECG is a reminder that wearable readings can differ meaningfully under exercise conditions, especially for participants with atrial fibrillation; its older devices do not predict performance of current products.

Bottom line

Pick heart-rate-monitoring earbuds for the combination of earbuds you already want, a compatible app setup, and the convenience of leaving your wrist bare. Pick a fitness watch when its wrist display, workout logging, or broader functions matter more. Neither choice has an evidence-backed accuracy advantage over the other based on the available current comparisons; fit, activity, and individual conditions remain central to the reading you get.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are heart-rate-monitoring earbuds more accurate than fitness watches?

There is no current direct comparison here that establishes that. A 2024 review of 29 peer-reviewed studies and more than 900 participants found smartwatch accuracy varied by device, activity, and individual factors, but it did not test current earbuds against current watches. Fit and workout conditions matter for both.

Can I use AirPods Pro 3 heart-rate tracking without an iPhone?

Apple documents workout heart-rate access through Fitness on iPhone, Apple Fitness+ on supported Apple devices, or supported third-party workout apps on iPhone or iPad. Check the app and device requirements for the setup you plan to use. Third-party apps need permission to read heart-rate data and workout records.

Why might AirPods Pro 3 show dashes or dimmed heart-rate data?

Apple says poor sensor contact can affect readings, and identifies cold, moisture, earwax, piercings, and individual differences in skin blood flow as possible factors. Check how the earbud is seated and whether the app is supported; the ear tip that gives the best acoustic seal may not be the one that gives the best sensor contact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do watches read heart rate better during running than tennis or boxing?

Apple says rhythmic movements such as running or cycling tend to produce better Apple Watch results than irregular movements such as tennis or boxing. That is guidance about conditions that can affect readings, not a guarantee for every workout or a comparison proving watches outperform earbuds.

What should I do if my Apple Watch heart-rate readings are inconsistent?

Check that the watch fits snugly and maintains close sensor contact, then consider movement and conditions such as cold, skin perfusion, or some tattoos. Apple says a Bluetooth chest strap can be connected to Apple Watch when readings are not consistent. Consumer workout readings are not a clinical measurement.

Does the ACC study prove current wearables are inaccurate?

No. The American College of Cardiology’s 2024 summary describes 81 participants and six older PPG-based wearable devices compared with ECG during treadmill exercise. It reports meaningful differences, including larger mean absolute differences at peak exercise among participants with atrial fibrillation, but those study-specific results should not be projected onto current earbuds or watches.

The Bottom Line

Choose earbuds for a compatible, comfortable way to track workouts without wearing a wrist device; choose a watch for its on-wrist display, workout logging, or other functions. Current evidence does not show a universal accuracy winner. Fit, movement, conditions, and app compatibility matter for both.
