The right health tracking app depends on what your loved one needs help with: managing provider services, keeping a medication schedule, recording measurements, or sharing selected updates. In England, NHS App family and carer access may be the best fit for authorized help with GP services; Apple Health can support user-controlled sharing and medication reminders for Apple users. These options work differently, and neither is a universal solution.
Start with the caregiving task
Before choosing an app, identify the specific job you need it to do. Accessing appointments and prescriptions is different from reminding someone to take medication, and both differ from receiving selected health updates. Check what the person wants shared and whether they can set up and manage that sharing themselves.
- Manage provider services or records: Ask about authorized proxy access or a provider-connected personal health record.
- Track medications or selected health information: Consider a phone-based health app the person can control.
- Record home measurements: Check whether the relevant provider service accepts manual entries, and how those readings will be used.
For NHS services in England: ask about family and carer access
The NHS App’s family and carer access lets a trusted person help someone manage health services when they cannot use them themselves, or help track care when they are too unwell to manage it. The GP surgery must set it up and decides the level of access. Depending on that decision, access may include appointments, repeat prescriptions, test results, and some or all of the person’s GP record. The NHS explains family and carer access and how to request it.
This is authorized access, not a request to use the patient’s account. The NHS says, “Setting up family and carer access with your GP surgery is more secure than sharing your own NHS login or GP app or website accounts, because:” (NHS guidance, reviewed 2 July 2026). The arrangement gives the patient more choice over what is shared, records the trusted person’s actions, and can be removed by contacting the GP surgery. If someone is pressuring the patient to share access, the NHS advises contacting the surgery.

For medication reminders and selected updates: consider Apple Health
For someone using Apple devices, Health can organize health information and medication lists, schedules, and reminders. It also supports sharing selected health information with another person. The person whose information is shared controls which categories are included; after they accept sharing, the recipient can see the selected summary and future updates. They can add or remove categories or stop sharing. Apple says medication information may also be shared with family, friends, and healthcare providers, and that medication-feature processing happens on device. Apple describes how to share Health data, and explains medication lists and reminders.
This option depends on the person being willing and able to set up and control sharing. Feature details can vary by jurisdiction and software version, so check the current options on the device before relying on a particular feature.

Provider-connected records and home measurements depend on local services
In England, a personal health record service accessed through the NHS App may be supplied by a commercial organization chosen by a GP surgery, integrated care board, or hospital. The service may let someone view parts of GP or hospital records, message health professionals, or record information to share with a provider. The supplier and available functions vary locally; the NHS App does not guarantee one consistent set of tools everywhere. The NHS privacy notice describes personal health record services and the information they may handle.

Some services may let a user enter measurements taken at home, such as weight or blood pressure. This can be useful for keeping a record to discuss with a provider, but the NHS source does not establish that a particular blood pressure monitor automatically connects to a particular service. Check the service’s own instructions before buying equipment for app compatibility.

Check consent, privacy, and practical usability
Health information can be sensitive. A useful choice is not just the app with the longest feature list: it is one the person understands, agrees to use, and can manage comfortably. UK government health app assessment criteria include informed consent, clear explanations of data use and sharing, security, accessibility, and ease of use. These are UK assessment criteria, not a statement of legal requirements in every country. See the UK government’s health app assessment criteria.
- Consent and control: Can the person choose what is shared, change the selection, or withdraw sharing?
- Access: Is access formally authorized by the provider, or is it personal data sharing controlled through an app?
- Privacy: Who receives the information, how is it protected, and how long is it retained?
- Ease of use: Can the person navigate the app, understand reminders, and correct or update information?
- Manual work: Must readings or other details be entered by hand, and who will do that reliably?
Choose by need, not by a single “best app” label
For help with NHS appointments, prescriptions, or records in England, start with the GP surgery and ask what family and carer access can cover. For medication schedules or selected health updates on Apple devices, review Health’s current sharing controls with the person. For provider-connected records or home measurements, first ask the local surgery, integrated care board, or hospital which service is available and what it supports.
