This guide covers health-insurance renewals, portability, migration, claims and policy changes under India’s IRDAI framework. The timelines below are those stated in IRDAI’s Health Department FAQ; the accessed FAQ does not state the year for those figures. Your policy schedule and wording still matter, and later regulatory changes may affect an individual case.

Can an insurer refuse to renew my health insurance after a claim?

Generally, no. IRDAI says an insurer cannot refuse renewal merely because you made a claim during the preceding policy year. The stated exception is a benefit-based policy whose terms provide that the contract ends once the covered benefit is paid—for example, a critical-illness policy with that condition.

Renewal is also distinct from buying a different product or asking for more cover. IRDAI’s regulation FAQ says an insurer must not require fresh underwriting, a new proposal form or a medical examination at renewal when the sum insured offered has not changed. Do not assume that same rule applies if you request an increase in sum insured or move to another product: those are different circumstances, and the applicable policy and rules determine their treatment.

Before renewing, check the renewal notice against your current schedule and wording. Confirm the insured members, sum insured, premium, policy period and any changes to terms. If something differs, ask the insurer to explain the change and provide the applicable documents before paying.

What is the grace period for health insurance renewal?

The grace period is the time immediately after a premium due date in which payment may preserve continuity benefits, such as progress through waiting periods. IRDAI’s Health Department FAQ lists the following periods by premium frequency:

Premium frequency Grace period stated by IRDAI Important qualification
Monthly installments 15 days IRDAI Health Department FAQ; year not stated on the accessed page. Coverage during an unpaid interval depends on the installment arrangement and policy terms.
Quarterly, half-yearly or annual installments 30 days IRDAI Health Department FAQ; year not stated on the accessed page. Continuity benefits and coverage during an unpaid interval are not the same thing.

Do not treat the grace period as an extension of active insurance. IRDAI says continuity credits can be preserved when renewal payment is made within the grace period, but the policyholder does not have coverage for a period for which no premium was received. In practice, that means a claim arising in an uninsured gap may not be covered even if a later payment preserves waiting-period progress.

Pay by the due date whenever possible. If that has passed, contact the insurer promptly, confirm the applicable grace period and payment instructions, and ask when coverage resumes. Keep the payment receipt and the insurer’s confirmation with your policy records.

How does health insurance portability work?

Portability is the facility to move eligible continuity credits from a health policy with one insurer to a policy with another insurer. IRDAI says it is available at renewal for individual, family-floater and group health policies. It is not an automatic transfer of every existing policy term: the new insurer assesses the application, and acceptance is not guaranteed.

For an indemnity policy, IRDAI identifies potential portability credits that can include the sum insured, no-claim bonus, specific waiting-period progress, pre-existing-disease waiting-period progress and moratorium-period progress, subject to the relevant prior cover and regulatory rules. These credits do not make two policies equivalent. The new policy may have different exclusions, sublimits, deductibles, co-payments, claim arrangements or renewal terms. An increase in sum insured can also receive separate waiting-period treatment for the added amount.

When to apply and what happens next

IRDAI gives the usual application window as at least 30 days before renewal, but not earlier than 60 days before renewal. It also says an insurer may consider a late application within 15 days of renewal if it ensures there is no break in cover. That late route is not a guaranteed extension of your existing policy or an assurance that the new insurer will accept you.

Portability stage IRDAI timing What it means for you
Application to acquiring insurer Generally 30–60 days before renewal; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. Apply to the insurer you want to join and leave time to receive its decision before the current policy expires.
Existing insurer provides policy and claim information 72 hours; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. The acquiring insurer obtains the information through the Insurance Information Bureau of India portal.
Acquiring insurer decides Five days after it receives the information; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. This is a decision timeline, not a promise of acceptance.
Possible late application Within 15 days of renewal if the insurer ensures there is no break in cover; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. Ask the insurer whether it will consider the application and how continuity will be protected.

A practical portability checklist

  1. Review your existing policy. Note the renewal date, insured members, sum insured, no-claim bonus, waiting periods and any applicable moratorium progress. Use the schedule and wording rather than relying only on a summary or sales description.
  2. Compare the proposed policy on its terms. Check cover and bonus, remaining waiting periods, exclusions and sublimits, deductible and co-payment, claim servicing and authorization arrangements, premium and renewal terms.
  3. Apply to the acquiring insurer within the stated window. Give the information it requests and ensure it can obtain your policy and claim history through the prescribed process.
  4. Wait for the decision and written terms. Confirm acceptance, the sum insured, recognized continuity credits, premium and effective date. Do not assume an application itself completes the switch.
  5. Protect continuity before ending the old cover. Confirm the new cover’s start date and avoid a gap. Keep the old policy active until the insurer has confirmed the transition and applicable terms.

Portability can preserve qualifying credits, but it does not force the new insurer to accept the risk or reproduce the old policy’s terms. Compare the actual documents, not just the headline sum insured or premium.

What is migration, and how is it different from portability?

Migration means moving to another health policy with the same insurer; portability means moving to a different insurer. IRDAI defines migration as a facility for policyholders—including members covered under family or group insurance—to transfer credits gained from a previous health policy to another policy with the same insurer.

When considering migration, ask the insurer which credits will carry over and review the new schedule and wording before changing policies. Credits do not make exclusions, sublimits or other policy conditions identical. Check the same decision points that matter in portability: cover and bonus, waiting-period treatment, limits and cost-sharing terms, claims arrangements, premium and renewal conditions.

How long does a health insurance claim take?

IRDAI’s Health Department FAQ lists the following service timelines. Each clock is tied to a specific claim event or type; these are not a single deadline for every step in every claim.

Claim milestone Timeline stated by IRDAI Clock starts from
Pre-authorization decision Within one hour; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. The pre-authorization request.
Final authorization Within three hours; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. Receipt of the discharge authorization request.
Non-cashless claim settlement Within 15 days; IRDAI Health Department FAQ, year not stated on the accessed page. The FAQ states the settlement timeline, but the accessed summary does not identify a more specific trigger for this clock.

These timelines do not establish that a claim must be approved or paid: claims are assessed under the policy contract and applicable regulations. Keep the claim reference number and copies of forms, bills, discharge papers and insurer communications. If a stated service timeline passes, follow up with the insurer using the claim reference and ask what remains outstanding and why.

What if I have more than one health insurance policy?

For multiple indemnity-based policies, IRDAI’s regulation FAQ says you may choose a policy for settlement and may seek a balance from another policy under that other policy’s terms. If the payable amount exceeds one policy’s sum insured after applicable deductibles or co-payment, you can choose an insurer for the balance.

This is not a right to collect the full same expense twice. Each claim is subject to the applicable policy wording, including limits and cost-sharing provisions. When deciding where to submit a claim, check what documents each insurer requires and how the policies coordinate; do not assume that duplicate cover automatically means duplicate payment.

What does the 60-month moratorium mean?

IRDAI says that after 60 continuous months of coverage, including continuity through portability and migration, a policy and claim cannot be contested for non-disclosure or misrepresentation except on grounds of established fraud. If the sum insured is enhanced, the 60-month period applies from the enhancement date to the enhanced amount.

This protection is not a blanket promise that every claim will be paid. A claim still has to be assessed under the policy and applicable rules; the moratorium statement concerns contesting a policy or claim on the specified grounds. Keep records of uninterrupted coverage and any enhancement so you can establish the relevant dates.

Can I change nominees, contact details, members or sum insured?

IRDAI says a policyholder can change a nomination during the policy term. For other servicing changes—such as address, contact details, covered members or sum insured—the official material available here does not establish one universal process or document list. Contact your insurer and follow its servicing instructions for your particular policy.

Ask the insurer to confirm in writing what documents are needed, when the change takes effect and whether it alters the schedule or premium. A change may affect underwriting, premium, eligibility or waiting periods only where the applicable policy and rules support that outcome; there is no single outcome to assume for every change. Keep the insurer’s confirmation and revised documents with your policy records.

What should I compare before renewing, porting or migrating?

Use the policy schedule and wording for a like-for-like check. A lower premium or larger headline sum insured alone cannot show whether a change is advantageous.

  • Cover and bonus: Compare the base sum insured and any no-claim bonus, including how each is reflected in the schedule.
  • Continuity: Check recognized waiting-period progress and, where relevant, the moratorium period. For a proposed increase, identify how the added amount is treated.
  • Limits and cost sharing: Read exclusions, sublimits, deductibles and co-payment terms; do not infer equivalence from the product name.
  • Claims: Compare claim servicing and authorization arrangements, and identify the documents and contact route for claims.
  • Price and renewal: Review the premium and renewal terms in the actual offer, not an estimate alone.
  • Acceptance and effective date: For a switch, confirm that the acquiring insurer has accepted the proposal, state the recognized credits and specify when the new cover begins.
