Headset crackling can come from Windows audio settings or drivers, Bluetooth interference, an app using a Bluetooth headset microphone, or a dirty, loose, or faulty cable or port. The sound alone does not prove the headset is broken. Compare it across devices and audio sources, then troubleshoot the connection and software path implicated by those checks.
Start by narrowing down when the crackling happens
Notice whether the noise occurs in every app or only one, during calls or all the time, and with stored audio as well as streamed audio. Also note whether the headset connects through a 3.5 mm plug, USB, Bluetooth, or a USB wireless receiver. These patterns help identify which part of the audio path to check; none proves a cause on its own.
- Play a familiar audio file stored on the source device, then compare it with streaming audio. For Bluetooth, keep the source device nearby during the test.
- If possible, connect the headset to another source device. Then try another headset on the original device. If the crackling follows one headset across devices, inspect the headset and its connection; if it stays with one source, check that device’s settings, drivers, or app.
- For a wired headset, reseat the plug or USB connector and check for looseness, visible damage, or debris. Follow the headset maker’s cleaning instructions rather than inserting tools or using a cable that is not confirmed compatible with the model.
Fix crackling from Bluetooth connection problems
Bluetooth audio can become distorted, stutter, or cut out when the signal is weak or interfered with. Apple recommends testing audio stored on the device with the source only a couple of metres away, which helps distinguish a connection problem from a streaming problem. Move the source closer and, if possible, away from common interference sources such as power cables, microwaves, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones. See Apple’s guidance on resolving Bluetooth interference.

On Windows, confirm that the headset is selected as the audio output device. If it is, try another available audio format, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and unpair and pair the headset again. Check for Bluetooth driver updates and restart the PC if needed. For higher-quality Bluetooth audio streaming, Microsoft advises checking the device documentation for A2DP support. Check Windows audio settings, drivers, and services
If crackling affects wired, USB, or Bluetooth audio on a Windows PC, Windows audio enhancements, an unsupported audio format, driver problems, or stopped audio services may be involved. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps.
- Open the sound settings for the selected output device and turn off audio enhancements, then test playback.
- In that device’s audio settings, choose a different available default format and test again.
- Update the audio driver. If the issue continues, Microsoft advises uninstalling the driver and installing the latest version from the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s website.
- Restart the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services, then test again.
Microsoft documents these troubleshooting options for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in its Windows audio troubleshooting guide. Its separate driver guidance also directs users to the device manufacturer for current audio or sound drivers when basic troubleshooting does not resolve a problem. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; that date matters if you are still using Windows 10.

When a Bluetooth microphone changes sound quality
If sound quality drops when a call or voice-chat app starts on a Mac, test whether the app is using the headset’s built-in microphone. Close apps that use that microphone, then play audio again. Apple recommends this check for reduced Bluetooth headphone sound quality; it is most relevant when the change coincides with a call or voice-chat session. See Apple’s Bluetooth headphone sound-quality guidance.
When to suspect the cable, plug, or port
For a wired connection, check that the connector is fully seated and that the cable and port have no visible damage or debris. Dust or debris can contribute to static and other audio issues, according to Corsair’s headset static troubleshooting guidance. Clean only as the headset maker instructs.

Replace a cable only if it is removable, the exact headset model supports a compatible replacement, and your checks point to the cable or its connection. A cable that fits physically is not necessarily compatible. If the problem persists after connection and software checks, follow the headset maker’s model-specific troubleshooting steps or contact its support team.
