Headless WordPress keeps WordPress as the content-management back end while a separate application delivers the public website. Editors continue to use the familiar WordPress dashboard for posts, pages, media, plugins and user roles; visitors receive pages rendered by a JavaScript framework such as Next.js, Nuxt, Astro or React. The two systems communicate through an API, usually WordPress REST API or WPGraphQL.
Hosting therefore means running two coordinated applications: a PHP/MySQL WordPress installation and a separately deployed front end, usually behind a CDN. This architecture can support app-like interactions, multiple channels and highly controlled performance, but it adds infrastructure, authentication, preview, SEO and maintenance work. Headless is not automatically faster, cheaper or better than a conventional WordPress theme.
What headless WordPress means
In a conventional WordPress site, one installation stores content, runs PHP, applies a theme and produces the HTML sent to a visitor. A headless installation removes the public-facing theme from that responsibility. WordPress remains the editorial system, while another application requests content and renders the user interface.
The word “headless” describes the missing presentation layer: WordPress still has its “body” (the database, dashboard, users, plugins and editorial workflow), but its traditional “head” (the PHP theme that displays pages) is replaced by an independently developed front end.

What stays in WordPress
- Posts, pages, custom post types, taxonomies and reusable content fields.
- Media-library records and uploaded files.
- Authors, roles, revisions, comments and editorial permissions.
- Plugins that extend the administration area, data model or API.
- Scheduled publishing and other editorial workflows.
What moves outside WordPress
- Templates, navigation components and page layouts.
- Client-side interactions and application state.
- Routing and URL handling for the public site.
- Rendering strategy, such as static generation, server rendering or incremental regeneration.
- Frontend deployment, CDN configuration and browser-side analytics.
A visitor might request www.example.com/news/article. The frontend application resolves that route, obtains the article through an API request to the WordPress server, combines it with author, media and related-content data, and returns rendered HTML or a client application. WordPress itself does not have to generate the visitor’s page.
How the two systems communicate
The frontend is an API client. It can request published content at build time, on each server request, or in the browser. The API choice determines how data is queried and how much integration work is required.
WordPress REST API
The REST API is included in WordPress core; no additional API plugin is required. Typical routes include /wp-json/wp/v2/posts and /wp-json/wp/v2/pages, which return JSON representations of content. The /wp-json/ index lists routes registered by WordPress and its plugins. If that index returns a 404, check that pretty permalinks are enabled; the REST handbook also documents using the rest_route query parameter as a fallback.
REST responses are straightforward and work well for a small site with mostly independent posts and pages. A limitation is that a response commonly contains related-record identifiers, such as author and media IDs, rather than all related data. The frontend then makes additional requests to assemble a complete page. Those extra round trips can complicate caching and increase latency when a page has many relationships.
WPGraphQL
WPGraphQL is a free, open-source plugin that adds a GraphQL endpoint, commonly /graphql. Instead of accepting a fixed resource response, it lets the frontend describe the exact fields and relationships it needs in one query. A page query can request the title, content, featured image, author and categories together.
The WordPress.org directory currently lists WPGraphQL version 2.23.1 and more than 30,000 active installations. The directory lists WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer as requirements. Its compatibility page lists testing across PHP 7.4–8.3, WordPress 6.0–6.8 and MariaDB 10.x; compatibility listings can lag behind current releases, so verify the plugin’s current requirement before upgrading production.

REST API or WPGraphQL?
| Consideration | REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Built into WordPress core | Requires a plugin |
| Typical access | Resource routes such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts |
One GraphQL endpoint, commonly /graphql |
| Data shape | Server-defined JSON; related records often require more requests | Client selects fields and relationships in a query |
| Best fit | Simple content models and small integrations | Complex relationships, multiple content types and data-heavy applications |
| Operational burden | Lower initial setup | Plugin maintenance, schema decisions and more integration work |
| Authentication options | Application Passwords with HTTP Basic authentication are documented for authenticated requests | Cookie-based authentication, WPGraphQL Headless Login and JWT approaches are documented |
Neither API is universally superior. Choose REST when predictable endpoints and minimal dependencies matter more than query efficiency. Choose WPGraphQL when the frontend repeatedly needs related data and you can operate an additional plugin and schema layer.
When headless WordPress is a good fit
Headless is most defensible when the presentation layer has requirements that a conventional theme would make difficult to maintain.
- App-like experiences: interactive dashboards, authenticated portals, product configurators or rich client-side navigation.
- Multiple channels: the same editorial content feeds a website, mobile application, kiosk or other clients.
- Separate specialist teams: content editors work in WordPress while frontend engineers use a modern JavaScript stack and independent release cycle.
- Controlled rendering: the team needs static generation or incremental regeneration with CDN distribution and does not want every page request to execute WordPress PHP.
- Existing WordPress investment: editors, workflows and content models are valuable, but the current theme is the constraint.
When a conventional WordPress site is more sensible
A standard theme is usually the better choice for a blog, brochure site or modest marketing website whose pages are mostly server-rendered and whose editors rely heavily on live previews and theme-based plugins. Headless introduces a second deployment, a second set of logs and a second security boundary without removing the need to maintain WordPress.

Many WordPress plugins assume they control the public theme. A plugin may still add fields or administration features in headless mode, but its widgets, shortcodes, checkout screens, visual editors or frontend JavaScript may not work unless you rebuild their output in the new application.
The hosting architecture
A production setup normally has four layers:
- WordPress origin: PHP, a supported database such as MySQL or MariaDB, object storage or disk for uploads, and HTTPS.
- API boundary: REST or GraphQL routes, authentication, rate controls and CORS policy.
- Frontend runtime: a framework such as Next.js, Nuxt, Astro or React, deployed to a JavaScript-capable host.
- Delivery and operations: CDN caching, DNS, deployment automation, monitoring, backups and cache invalidation.
Backend and frontend can use different providers. Common frontend hosts named for this architecture include Vercel, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages. The WordPress side can run on ordinary PHP/MySQL hosting, a development or staging service such as InstaWP, or a managed WordPress provider such as Cloudways, Kinsta or WP Engine. Managed hosting is particularly useful when API request volume, database tuning or plugin complexity makes server administration a burden; it is not a requirement for headless WordPress.
How to host headless WordPress step by step
1. Define the content contract and domains
List every public route, content type, relationship and required field before choosing an API. Decide which hostname will serve the public site, for example www.example.com, and which private or subdomain hostname will expose WordPress, such as cms.example.com. Keep the API origin on HTTPS and decide whether media URLs should remain on the WordPress host or use object storage/CDN delivery.
Document draft, preview and published states. A frontend that only understands “published” content will not provide a useful editor preview later without redesign.
2. Provision the WordPress backend
- Install a current supported WordPress release on PHP/MySQL hosting with HTTPS enabled.
- Create separate development, staging and production installations or clearly isolated databases. Never let a test frontend write to production content accidentally.
- Set the site and WordPress addresses to the intended HTTPS hostname.
- Open Settings → Permalinks and select a non-default pretty-permalink structure, then save. This commonly resolves REST route discovery problems.
- Configure upload limits, scheduled tasks, database backups and server-level monitoring before connecting the frontend.
- Install only the plugins needed for editorial, data-model, security and API functions. Test each plugin’s headless behavior rather than assuming its public output will carry over.
3. Expose and test the API
For REST, request a public collection such as https://cms.example.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts and confirm that JSON is returned. For GraphQL, install WPGraphQL, visit its endpoint and run a minimal query through an authenticated development tool or your frontend. Check pagination, ordering, featured images, custom fields and taxonomy values with real content.

Public requests should receive only fields intended for public consumption. Review plugin-registered routes as well as core routes.
4. Set authentication and CORS deliberately
Public reading and editorial operations should be treated differently. A read-only public site may not need credentials for published content. Build tools, previews and mutations do. The REST handbook’s Application Password example uses HTTP Basic authentication over HTTPS; create a dedicated WordPress user with the minimum role and revoke the credential when it is no longer needed.
WPGraphQL documentation covers cookie-based authentication, WPGraphQL Headless Login and JWT-based patterns. Select one pattern, store secrets in the host’s encrypted environment variables and never commit them to the frontend repository.
Configure CORS to allow only the exact development and production frontend origins that need browser access. Avoid a wildcard origin when credentials or private data are involved. If browser requests fail while server-side requests work, inspect the preflight response, allowed methods, allowed headers and HTTPS scheme.

5. Build the frontend data layer
Create one API client rather than scattering fetch calls through components. Normalize errors, timeouts, pagination and image data there. A minimal REST request might look like this:
const response = await fetch(`${CMS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?slug=${slug}&_embed=1`, { next: { revalidate: 60 } });
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`WordPress request failed: ${response.status}`);
const posts = await response.json();
The _embed option can reduce some follow-up requests by embedding related resources when supported, but inspect the response size and fields rather than assuming it replaces a complete data model.
A GraphQL client sends a query describing the fields needed by the route:
const query = `query Article($slug: ID!) {
post(id: $slug, idType: SLUG) {
title
content
date
author { node { name } }
featuredImage { node { sourceUrl altText } }
}
}`;
Keep query fragments for shared fields and reject unexpected HTML or missing media safely. WordPress content can contain shortcodes, embeds and markup that your frontend must sanitize and render intentionally.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →6. Choose a rendering and cache strategy
Static generation builds pages ahead of time and serves them efficiently from a CDN. Incremental static regeneration (ISR) serves a cached page while rebuilding it after a configured interval or webhook. Server-side rendering fetches data when a request arrives and is useful for highly dynamic or personalized pages, but it increases origin traffic.
Headless by itself does not guarantee faster pages. A poorly cached frontend that requests WordPress for every visitor can be slower than a well-tuned conventional site. Set cache headers, use CDN caching for public responses, optimize images and choose revalidation intervals based on publishing frequency.
7. Implement previews before editors need them
Preview mode requires work in both systems. WordPress must provide a secure way to identify the draft and authorize the request; the frontend must offer a preview route that bypasses the published cache and renders draft data. Use short-lived, signed tokens or an equivalent mechanism, restrict preview access to authenticated editors and ensure a preview URL cannot expose arbitrary private posts.
Test the full workflow: an editor changes a draft, selects Preview in WordPress, authenticates if required, sees the draft in the frontend, then exits preview and returns to the cached public version.
8. Reproduce SEO and social metadata
Without the PHP theme, WordPress SEO plugins cannot automatically place tags in the delivered HTML. The frontend must output canonical URLs, title and description tags, Open Graph and social-card metadata, robots directives, structured data where appropriate, XML sitemaps and correct status codes.

If an SEO plugin stores metadata in WordPress, expose those fields through REST or GraphQL and map them into the frontend document head. A September 2026 WPGraphQL guide specifically addresses using Yoast data with the Next.js App Router, replacing an older guide aimed at the Pages Router; verify current integration instructions when your framework or plugin versions differ.
Use server-rendered or statically generated HTML for pages that must be discoverable. Client-only rendering can delay or obscure the content and metadata crawlers need.
9. Connect publishing to deployment and cache invalidation
Decide how a new or edited post reaches visitors. Options include a timed revalidation interval, a WordPress webhook that triggers a frontend build, or an on-demand revalidation endpoint. Protect any trigger with a secret, validate the event payload and make the operation idempotent so duplicate events do not start unbounded builds.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Keep source code, environment variables and deployment logs in the frontend platform. The WordPress host should retain database and upload backups independently of the frontend repository; a frontend rollback cannot restore missing media or content.
10. Monitor both halves
- Track API latency, error rates, response sizes, PHP worker saturation and database load on WordPress.
- Track build duration, failed deployments, cache-hit ratio, frontend JavaScript errors and web-vital measurements.
- Alert on expired certificates, failed backups, authentication errors and unexpected spikes in API requests.
- Test a restore of the database and uploads, not merely the existence of backup files.
Security and operational safeguards
Headless changes the attack surface; it does not remove WordPress security responsibilities. Keep core, themes that remain installed, plugins and PHP updated. Remove unused plugins, restrict administrator accounts and require multifactor authentication where available. Put the administration area behind an appropriate access policy without blocking the API routes the frontend needs.
Use least-privilege accounts for build jobs and preview. Separate read-only public access from write-capable credentials. Validate and sanitize content at the rendering boundary, especially when accepting custom HTML, embeds or user-submitted fields. Apply rate limits to expensive queries and set maximum query depth or complexity controls for GraphQL if your deployment supports them.
Do not cache personalized responses at a shared CDN. Mark authenticated or preview responses private and ensure a cache key cannot serve one user’s data to another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCosts, complexity and performance trade-offs
There is no universal headless price. You pay for WordPress hosting, frontend hosting, domains, CDN or image storage as applicable, development time and ongoing maintenance of two applications. A free frontend tier may still incur engineering cost through build minutes, preview environments, monitoring and cache management. Managed WordPress hosting can reduce server work but raises the recurring hosting bill.
Performance gains depend on implementation. Static generation and ISR can move work away from the WordPress origin and distribute HTML through a CDN. Conversely, excessive API round trips, unoptimized GraphQL queries, uncached server rendering, large JavaScript bundles or remote images can erase that benefit. Measure time to first byte, largest contentful paint, interaction responsiveness, API latency and cache-hit ratios on representative pages rather than assuming the architecture is faster.

Troubleshooting common failures
The REST index returns 404
Confirm the WordPress URL, HTTPS certificate and rewrite rules. Open Settings → Permalinks, save the selected pretty-permalink structure, clear any page cache and retry /wp-json/. If rewrites cannot be enabled, use the documented rest_route parameter and check whether a security layer is blocking the request.
The browser reports a CORS error
Compare the browser’s Origin header with the allow-list on WordPress. Handle OPTIONS preflight requests, allow the required headers and methods, and do not mix HTTP and HTTPS origins. Test the same endpoint from the frontend server: a successful server request does not prove that browser CORS is configured.

With REST, inspect whether the response contains only an ID. Request the related endpoint, use embedding where appropriate, or redesign the client cache to avoid repeated calls. With GraphQL, confirm that the field is registered in the schema, the relationship is populated and the plugin exposing the custom field is active in the environment being queried.
Editors cannot preview drafts
Check both sides of preview mode: WordPress must issue a valid, time-limited authorization token and the frontend must route that token to a draft-fetching code path. Disable CDN caching for preview responses, verify clock skew between systems and test with an editor account that has permission to view the draft.
Pages show old content after publishing
Identify every cache layer: frontend data cache, generated page cache, CDN, reverse proxy and browser. Invalidate or revalidate each layer from the publishing event, and confirm that the event reaches the production frontend rather than a staging URL. Use a short temporary revalidation interval while diagnosing; restore a deliberate policy after the cause is found.
A plugin feature disappeared
Determine whether the plugin supplied administration data or public theme output. If it only provided a widget, shortcode, template, checkout interface or browser script, recreate that behavior in the frontend or choose a headless-compatible integration. Do not assume installing the same plugin on the backend reproduces its public UI.

Migration and launch checklist
- All required content types, fields, taxonomies and media relationships are represented in API responses.
- Every public URL has a frontend route, including pagination, feeds and attachment handling where relevant.
- 404, redirect, canonical and trailing-slash behavior is documented and tested.
- Draft preview, scheduled publishing and cache invalidation work with real editor accounts.
- SEO metadata, sitemap, robots policy, structured data and social previews are present in delivered HTML.
- API credentials are stored as secrets, scoped to least privilege and absent from client bundles.
- Backups cover the database and uploads, and a restore test has succeeded.
- Load testing or representative monitoring covers API, build and CDN behavior.
- Rollback procedures exist independently for WordPress data and frontend code.
Is headless WordPress worth it?
Headless WordPress is worth the additional system when the business value of a decoupled frontend—multiple channels, application-style interaction, independent releases or controlled static delivery—exceeds the cost of operating two stacks. It is usually unnecessary for a straightforward blog or brochure site that already performs well with a maintained theme.
The practical decision is architectural, not fashionable. Start by listing the frontend capabilities, publishing workflows and integrations the site genuinely needs. Prototype the most relationship-heavy content and the complete preview-to-publish path. If API modeling, authentication, SEO and cache invalidation remain manageable, headless can provide a durable separation between editorial work and frontend engineering. If those requirements consume more effort than the site’s value justifies, a conventional WordPress frontend is the lower-risk option.
