Dragon Pearl of Destruction is the closest upcoming He-Man game to a modern arcade brawler: it is a retro-styled, side-scrolling 2D action game built around character-specific attacks, power-ups and local co-op. Earlier He-Man releases were made for very different hardware and genres, so there is no honest one-size-fits-all winner yet. The useful comparison is what each game actually offers, when it was made and how it can be played.
What Dragon Pearl of Destruction is
Dragon Pearl of Destruction is a forthcoming He-Man action game developed by Bitmap Bureau and published by Limited Run Games. Steam describes it as a fast-paced magic-brawler, while the Nintendo Switch listing presents it as a brawler with retro-inspired presentation. Those descriptions establish the format and planned content; they are not a substitute for a review or hands-on test. The game has not yet been independently assessed for difficulty, performance, length or overall quality.
The announced structure is straightforward. You choose from familiar Masters of the Universe heroes, fight through a sequence of action stages, collect power-ups and use each character’s individual moves and abilities. Battle Cat is part of the adventure. Nintendo lists one-to-two players on a single system, and Steam specifies local two-player co-op. There is no evidence in the supplied material of online multiplayer, competitive modes or a four-player option.
That makes the game fundamentally different from many licensed He-Man releases. It is designed around cooperative arcade action rather than a historically accurate recreation of the 1980s television show, a handheld role-playing format or a single-screen home-console experiment. The comparison with older games is therefore most useful when it separates genre and hardware from the He-Man name itself.

When does the He-Man game come out?
Nintendo’s US Switch listing currently gives February 4, 2027 as the release date. That is the most specific current date in the available evidence, but it should be treated as a dated store listing rather than a permanent guarantee. The game’s schedule has already changed.
How the release window changed
- The 2025 announcement said console and PC versions were planned, with physical pre-orders and a digital release targeted for early 2026.
- A report dated August 25, 2026, following the Pixel Arcadia Showcase on August 24, said the game had moved from summer 2026 to an early-2027 window. That report did not give a month or day.
- Nintendo’s later/current US listing supplies the February 4, 2027 date.
- Steam still labels the PC version “Coming soon” in the available listing.
Anyone planning a purchase should check the relevant store page again close to launch. A changed date would not be unusual here, and the Nintendo date applies specifically to the US Switch listing rather than automatically proving that every regional or PC release will occur on the same day.
How the modern brawler plays
Side-scrolling action instead of a simulation
The available descriptions point to a classic beat-’em-up structure: a hero moves through action stages, fights groups of enemies and advances toward the next encounter. “Retro-styled” describes the presentation and arcade influence, not a claim that the game reproduces the exact mechanics of a particular 1980s He-Man cartridge. The modern design is expected to combine recognizable characters and settings with faster, more elaborate combat than the earliest home-console adaptations could provide.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nintendo specifically calls out character-specific moves and abilities. That implies a reason to switch characters or replay stages, but the stores do not document damage values, move lists, upgrade trees, enemy types or a final difficulty curve. Those details should not be invented from the promotional phrase alone.
Power-ups and Battle Cat
Power-ups are listed as part of the core action, and Battle Cat is named in both the Nintendo and Steam descriptions. Neither listing explains whether Battle Cat is a temporary mount, a controllable character, a summon or a stage-specific feature. Treat it as confirmed content, while leaving its precise role open until a manual, gameplay demonstration or review provides more detail.

Stage-count conflict
The two storefronts do not agree on the number of stages. Nintendo says the game contains “over 13 action-packed levels.” Steam says “12 Action-Packed Stages.” Because both are official storefront descriptions and neither explains the difference, it would be misleading to turn them into one precise count.
| Storefront | Wording | What can safely be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch, US listing | “Over 13 action-packed levels” | Nintendo presents a campaign exceeding 13 levels, but the listing does not provide a final numbered total. |
| Steam | “12 Action-Packed Stages” | Steam presents 12 stages in its current description. |
The discrepancy may reflect different counting conventions, a listing that was not updated at the same time, bonus content, or a simple copy change. Until the developer or an updated store page resolves it, quote each figure with its source instead of advertising an unsupported exact length.

Playable roster named by the stores
Nintendo lists He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms and She-Ra. Steam lists He-Man, Man-At-Arms and Teela, and adds that She-Ra is unlockable on a later playthrough. The combined information supports four named heroes, with She-Ra’s availability potentially tied to progression rather than being selectable from the opening screen.
“Character-specific moves and abilities” suggests meaningful differences among the heroes, but the available descriptions do not establish which character is fastest, strongest or easiest for beginners. Avoid treating promotional roster copy as a balance chart. A player choosing solely by play style will need to wait for a move guide or hands-on coverage.
One system, two local players
Nintendo states support for one-to-two players on one system. Steam calls the feature local two-player co-op. The confirmed use case is therefore a solo run or couch co-op for two people on the same device. No supplied source confirms online matchmaking, cross-play, split-screen, four-player support or separate progression for each participant.

For a household deciding between platforms, this distinction matters more than the He-Man license. If two people want to play together, plan around local access to a second controller and the platform’s normal multiplayer requirements. Do not assume that a Steam listing marked local co-op includes online play.

Confirmed storefront information
Nintendo currently lists a digital Switch edition in the United States. Steam lists a PC version and identifies the game as coming soon. The announcement also described a console-and-PC release plan.
| Platform or format | Evidence available | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | US digital listing; February 4, 2027 date currently shown. | Whether every region uses the same date, final download size, performance targets or a physical SKU currently in stock. |
| PC via Steam | Store page lists Bitmap Bureau as developer, Limited Run Games as publisher and says “Coming soon.” | A firm launch date, system requirements, frame-rate target or online features. |
| Physical edition | The 2025 announcement said physical pre-orders were planned. | Current stock, retailer availability, shipping timing, regional packaging and whether a specific retailer listing is genuine. |
A planned physical pre-order is not proof that a physical copy is available today. Check the publisher’s current announcement and the retailer’s own listing before paying, and verify whether an offer is a cartridge, a boxed download code or a PC package. The available evidence does not establish an Amazon listing, an affiliate offer or a final physical-edition specification.
How it compares with the 1983 The Power of He-Man
Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man is the clearest documented contrast because it belongs to an earlier generation and uses a two-part structure. The Mattel game appeared for Intellivision and Atari 2600. Historical descriptions show the player piloting the Wind Raider toward Skeletor, then continuing with on-foot action toward Castle Grayskull.
That format is not a direct predecessor to a modern scrolling brawler. Its appeal lies in switching between flight and ground play within the technical limits of early home consoles. Dragon Pearl of Destruction, by contrast, is presented as a continuous 2D action experience with multiple heroes, power-ups and local co-op.

| Feature | The Power of He-Man (1983) | Dragon Pearl of Destruction |
|---|---|---|
| Era | Early 1980s home-console era. | Forthcoming modern retro-styled release. |
| Known platforms | Intellivision and Atari 2600. | Nintendo Switch and PC are described in the available listings. |
| Documented structure | Wind Raider flight followed by on-foot action. | 2D brawler stages with character abilities and power-ups. |

| Comparison value | Shows how dramatically He-Man game design has changed across hardware generations. | Represents the franchise’s current arcade-brawler direction. |
Players interested in videogame history should see these as different interpretations of the same license, not entries in a single mechanically consistent series. The 1983 title is useful for understanding the franchise’s early console history; the new game is aimed at contemporary co-op action.
What can be said about other He-Man games?
Masters of the Universe: The Arcade Game (1987)
Masters of the Universe: The Arcade Game is identified as a 1980s adaptation in franchise game lists. The available material does not provide enough verified mechanical detail to compare its controls, stage design, enemy roster or multiplayer with Dragon Pearl of Destruction. It is best treated as historical context rather than evidence that the new game follows a specific arcade formula.
He-Man: Power of Grayskull (2002)
He-Man: Power of Grayskull is identified as a Game Boy Advance title. That establishes a handheld-era reference point, but the sources available here do not document enough of its gameplay to support claims about quality, combat depth, length or similarity to the new brawler.
He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe (2012)
He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe appears in historical franchise overviews as a later-era release. The available evidence does not verify its detailed mechanics or present availability, so it should not be used to assign a genre, score or direct mechanical ranking against Dragon Pearl of Destruction.

These omissions are important. A franchise list can prove that a title exists without proving how it plays today, where it can be purchased or whether it is a suitable alternative. The evidence is much stronger for the announced features of the upcoming game than for a complete catalog of every licensed, mobile or fan-made He-Man project.

Which game is the better fit?
Choose Dragon Pearl if you want modern local co-op
The upcoming release is the obvious candidate for players whose priority is a contemporary 2D brawler with a friend beside them. Its confirmed two-player local mode, named roster and power-up structure address that use case directly. The qualification is timing: the game is still forthcoming, and its final feel cannot be judged from store copy.
Choose The Power of He-Man for early-console history
The 1983 game is more relevant if your interest is how a He-Man license was adapted to Intellivision and Atari 2600. Its Wind Raider-to-ground sequence makes it a distinctive artifact of its hardware generation, not a substitute for the modern game’s co-op brawler format.
Use the other titles as era markers
The 1987, 2002 and 2012 games help map the franchise’s videogame history, but the available evidence does not justify calling any one of them a better action game, a better adaptation or a more available purchase. Readers seeking one of those titles should confirm the original platform, legal availability and current compatibility independently.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the date on your storefront. The current US Switch listing is the most specific date available, but previous windows moved and the PC listing remains “Coming soon.”
- Confirm your platform and edition. Nintendo currently shows a digital Switch edition. A physical plan announced in 2025 does not prove that a cartridge or boxed copy is in stock.
- Check the multiplayer requirement. The confirmed mode is local play for one or two people on one system. Have the necessary second controller available if you intend to play cooperatively.
- Read the final character description. She-Ra is listed by Nintendo, while Steam says she unlocks on a later playthrough. Do not assume every hero is available at the opening of the campaign.
- Treat the stage count cautiously. Nintendo says over 13 levels; Steam says 12 stages. Wait for an updated listing or official clarification before using a precise campaign-length figure.
- Look for independent reviews after launch. No hands-on testing, performance measurement or review score is established here. Reviews are the appropriate source for questions about controls, difficulty, replay value and technical quality.
What remains unknown
The confirmed information is enough to identify the game’s format and intended audience, but not enough to make a quality ranking. The following points remain open in the available material:
- Final enemy roster, boss encounters and stage-by-stage structure.
- Exact move sets, character balance and whether abilities can be upgraded.
- How Battle Cat functions during play.
- Whether local co-op supports drop-in play, shared progression or separate character unlocks.
- Online multiplayer, cross-play and accessibility options.
- PC system requirements, resolution and performance targets.
- Final regional dates, pricing and physical-edition specifications.
- Whether the Nintendo and Steam stage counts describe different content or simply reflect inconsistent copy.
Keeping these questions open is more accurate than filling them with assumptions from the He-Man television series or from another beat-’em-up. Promotional wording can establish what a publisher intends to ship; only the finished game and independent testing can establish how well it works.
He-Man franchise context
Mattel dates the Masters of the Universe mythology to 1982 and describes it as a blend of swords-and-sorcery action and futuristic science-fiction technology. He-Man’s role is to protect Eternia from Skeletor. That combination explains why the license can support very different game formats: a Wind Raider sequence, a handheld adaptation, an arcade experiment and a modern magic-brawler can all draw on the same setting without sharing controls or structure.
Dragon Pearl of Destruction leans into the franchise’s recognizable heroes while using a format familiar to modern arcade-action players. Mattel’s Erika Winterholler called it “a love letter to those who grew up with He-Man, combining nostalgic visuals with fast-paced, modern gameplay.” That is promotional framing, not an independent assessment, but it accurately describes the stated design goal: nostalgia in presentation paired with a newer co-op action format.
Bottom line
Dragon Pearl of Destruction should be compared with earlier He-Man games by era, platform and genre rather than by a single franchise-wide score. It is the forthcoming title for players who want a retro-inspired 2D brawler, four named heroes and local two-player action. The Power of He-Man remains the best documented historical contrast because its Wind Raider flight and on-foot sequence show how different the license looked on Intellivision and Atari 2600. The 1987, 2002 and 2012 titles belong in the timeline, but the available evidence is too thin for a reliable mechanical or quality ranking. Check the release listing again before purchase, especially because the date and stage-count descriptions have changed or conflict.
