Ash Saulsbury, a former Meta wearable-reality executive, is building Awear AI around a controversial promise: your glasses-based assistant should remember your preferences and history even if you switch eyewear brands. Its proposed Agentic System One (AS-One) combines an operating layer, cloud services, hardware designs, encrypted communications and a portable memory vault. The concept directly challenges the lock-in created when one company controls both the glasses and the AI account, but Awear has not yet published a product, price, launch date or independent proof that its privacy controls work as described.
Who is Ash Saulsbury?
Saulsbury led Meta’s wearable-reality products from 2017 to 2019. Before that, he spent seven years as an Apple systems architect. He later became Microsoft’s vice president of architecture for mixed reality. His career spans the major software and hardware companies now competing to put cameras, microphones and AI assistants on people’s faces.
Fast Company’s October 15, 2026 profile presents his new company, Awear AI, as an attempt to change how those assistants are owned and governed. Instead of treating a user’s accumulated context as an asset tied permanently to one eyewear maker, Awear says that context should belong to the user and move between compatible devices.
What Awear AI is building
AS-One is intended for eyewear makers
Awear’s Agentic System One, or AS-One, is a platform for manufacturers rather than a finished pair of glasses. The company says it provides:

- Underlying software for an AI agent running on connected eyewear
- Connected services that support the agent
- Adaptable hardware designs for different eyewear products
- Encrypted communications between the agent and its services
- A memory vault for storing personal context across devices
The intended result is that a wearer could change brands without starting over. Preferences, prior interactions and other information the assistant has been allowed to retain would be exported from one implementation of AS-One and imported into another.
Portability is the differentiator
Saulsbury describes the idea in ownership terms: “The agents you use should work for you, not for somebody else. Even if you decide to leave, you can take all that information with you and move it somewhere else. You will always have visibility into what the agentic system knows about you.”
That is different from the common account-based model in which a company operates the assistant, stores the conversation history and decides whether another service can read it. Awear’s stated goal is to make the memory itself portable, not merely to let a user download a transcript.

How portable AI memory could reduce lock-in
A useful portability standard would need to cover more than chat logs. A practical transfer would have to identify what the assistant knows, how each item was obtained, which permissions apply, and whether a new agent can safely act on it. Users would also need a way to inspect, correct, delete and revoke individual memories.
Awear executive Lila Tretikov compares that separation to professional boundaries: “Think of it much like the relationship between your doctor and your insurance agent. They have different responsibilities, and that does not mean they should automatically share everything they know about you.” In this model, a memory vault could hold user-approved facts while different agents receive only the portions needed for a task.
Tretikov also invokes Wikipedia’s exportability as a trust model: “It is trusted because the content is structurally protected, because its licensing allows anyone to take all of that content and leave. That is the same standard I want us to apply to personal memory.” She argues that making the format easier for competitors to read could increase adoption: “If competitors adopt our export format, users win and the standard spreads. We win. Trust is the standard.”

Awear had not published a complete memory-transfer specification, and Fast Company identified no competing service that can accept a complete AI memory. Until both sides of a transfer exist, portability remains an architectural objective rather than a demonstrated feature.
Why this matters in a concentrated smart-glasses market
Counterpoint Research, as quoted by Fast Company, estimated that Meta accounted for approximately 84% of global smart-glasses shipments in the first half of 2026. A share that large gives the leading platform substantial influence over hardware, software updates, cloud accounts and the data generated by daily use.
Concentration does not by itself prove that a user cannot leave. The lock-in risk appears when an assistant’s useful knowledge is trapped in a vendor account, when another company cannot interpret the data, or when the original provider controls the encryption keys and export rules. Awear is positioning AS-One as a layer below the eyewear brand so that those rules travel with the runtime.

Jan Eißfeldt, an Awear executive, says: “The manufacturer locks sit in the runtime we ship, below the brand’s layer. A brand configures the experience above it and doesn’t get a switch to turn off the protections.” That would limit a manufacturer’s ability to disable safeguards, but the claim still depends on how AS-One is licensed, audited and enforced in commercial products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What privacy protections Awear proposes
Smart glasses create a special privacy problem because their microphones and cameras can capture people who are not wearing them. Awear describes several controls, all of which should be treated as proposed architecture until a product demonstration or independent audit verifies them:
- Direct authorization for purchases: the agent would not be allowed to buy something without the user’s explicit approval.
- Reversible decisions: purchase actions should remain recoverable if a user changes their mind or forgets approving one.
- User-controlled encryption keys: the design aims to keep control of the keys with the user rather than the platform operator.
- Encrypted storage and communications: personal context and agent traffic would be protected in storage and transit.
- Consent controls: the system would manage when recordings or interactions are authorized.
- Wake-word and voice-recognition gates: the assistant would require its activation phrase and recognize permitted voices before responding in sensitive situations.
- Inward and outward listening indicators: people nearby and the wearer would have visual signals showing which microphones are active.
Saulsbury says, “We don’t allow the AI agent to make a purchase without your direct authorization. We want to make sure that even if you purchase something and later change your mind, or perhaps forget that you made the purchase in the first place, those decisions remain reversible and you have a way to recover from them.”

Eißfeldt says the system would need to be close to a private conversation, recognize the relevant voices and receive valid consent. He adds that a keyword spotter remains active and “until you say your assistant’s name, it’s deaf.” Those statements describe intended behavior, not a verified guarantee that unwanted recordings cannot occur. Microphone placement, false recognitions, indicators that bystanders can actually see and the handling of cloud-side processing will determine how effective the controls are.
What is known—and not yet known—about the product
As of the Fast Company report, Awear had not disclosed:
- Pricing for AS-One or any consumer device
- Funding totals or named investors
- Eyewear manufacturing partners
- A release date
- A full technical specification for exporting and importing memory
Those omissions matter because portability can fail at several points: a brand may implement only part of the format, a cloud provider may refuse imports, or a user may not control the keys needed to decrypt an archive. The company’s claims should therefore be read as a platform proposal, not as evidence that a buyer can switch glasses today and retain a complete assistant history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuestions to ask before buying AI glasses
Anyone evaluating an AI-eyewear platform should ask the manufacturer:
- Can I export all assistant memory in a documented, machine-readable format?
- Can another provider import that file and preserve permissions, corrections and deletion requests?
- Who holds the encryption keys, and can I rotate or revoke them?
- Which company operates the assistant and cloud, and where is processing performed?
- Can I choose another model or use the service in a different country?
- Do purchases require confirmation, and can approved actions be undone?
- How are bystanders notified, and what prevents recording before consent?
- Can the eyewear brand disable or bypass the runtime’s protections?
Awear’s proposal addresses each of these categories in principle, especially memory portability, key control, authorization and bystander consent. It has not yet supplied the public specifications, partners or demonstrations needed to compare those promises with a shipping product.
The bottom line for users
Saulsbury’s project is an attempt to make personal AI context an asset users can carry instead of a retention tool controlled by the dominant glasses platform. If AS-One delivers a verifiable export and import standard, user-held keys and enforceable privacy controls, switching brands could become less costly and more competitive. For now, the market remains heavily concentrated, Awear’s commercial details are undisclosed, and its safeguards remain claims awaiting implementation and independent scrutiny.
