Use HDR for HDR-authored games, films, and video when your monitor genuinely supports HDR and the picture looks correct. Use SDR for ordinary desktop work when HDR makes documents, browser pages, or other SDR apps look too dark, too bright, washed out, or oversaturated. There is no universal “always on” setting: the right choice depends on the content, your monitor’s HDR implementation, and how Windows is rendering SDR apps alongside HDR.

The short answer: choose the mode that matches both the content and the display

High Dynamic Range (HDR) can show brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and a wider range of colors than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). Those differences are visible only when the content was produced for HDR and the monitor can reproduce the signal well. An HDR toggle by itself does not guarantee a better image.

For a certified HDR monitor playing an HDR game or film, enable HDR and select the title’s HDR mode. For documents, spreadsheets, web pages, coding, and other mostly SDR work, leave HDR off if the desktop looks uncomfortable or inaccurate. Some monitors render SDR acceptably while Windows HDR is enabled; others make SDR applications look dim, bright, or desaturated. Your own display is the deciding factor.

What HDR changes compared with SDR

Brightness and shadow detail

SDR uses a narrower brightness range. HDR preserves more separation between a dark scene and a very bright highlight, so a reflection, lamp, explosion, or sunlit cloud can look more intense without making every part of the image bright. Dark areas can retain detail instead of collapsing into a single black-looking region.

Color range

HDR content can contain a wider range of colors than conventional SDR content. VESA describes HDR as capable of maintaining the same average brightness while significantly increasing the range of colors and improving contrast by more than 100 times. That is an official VESA statement; the cited FAQ passage does not provide a publication year or methodology for the figure, so it should be treated as a description of the technology’s intended range rather than an independent measurement of every monitor.

Why the benefit is content-dependent

An SDR document cannot gain HDR highlights merely because Windows HDR is switched on. Windows can compose SDR and HDR applications together, but it must map SDR content into the HDR signal. If the monitor, operating system, application, or game handles that conversion poorly, SDR can look less natural than it does with HDR disabled.

HDR or SDR? Use this decision table

Your situation Start with Reason Check before keeping it
HDR game or movie on a monitor that supports HDR HDR on HDR-authored highlights, shadows, and color are the purpose of the mode. Confirm the game or player is actually outputting HDR and that the image is not clipped, dim, or oversaturated.
Mostly documents, browser tabs, email, or coding SDR, unless your monitor renders SDR well in HDR mode SDR is often more comfortable and predictable for ordinary desktop content. With HDR on, inspect white backgrounds, black text, skin tones, and neutral gray areas.
Mixed work with occasional HDR games or video Use SDR normally; enable HDR for HDR sessions This avoids accepting a desktop compromise when HDR is not needed. Use Windows’ display shortcut or Settings to switch modes, and restart an app if its appearance does not update.
HDR looks washed out, too dark, or excessively vivid Do not assume HDR is working correctly The monitor may be misconfigured, Windows’ SDR balance may be wrong, or the display may handle sRGB poorly. Adjust the HDR/SDR balance, check the monitor menu, update drivers, and test another connection.
Windows does not show an HDR control SDR until capability is verified A missing control can mean the GPU, connection, driver, or display is not being recognized as HDR-capable. Review the display capabilities page and the exact monitor, GPU, port, and cable specifications.

How your monitor’s HDR implementation affects the choice

“HDR supported” is not a uniform quality grade

Two monitors can accept an HDR signal and produce very different results. Microsoft recommends certified HDR displays and warns that some HDR-capable monitors do not reproduce sRGB colors correctly in desktop applications. Certification and the monitor manufacturer’s specifications are more useful than a simple HDR label, but neither removes the need to look at your own picture.

Monitor processing can change the result

Many monitors expose separate picture presets or an HDR mode in their on-screen display (OSD). A preset can alter brightness, color temperature, saturation, or other processing when HDR is detected. If HDR looks unnaturally vivid, inspect the OSD for a post-processing or color mode that is being applied only in HDR. Record your SDR settings before experimenting so you can return to them.

Average brightness is not the same as highlight capability

HDR is about range, not simply making the entire screen brighter. A display that raises overall brightness while losing shadow detail or clipping highlights is not delivering the intended benefit. Compare recognizable details in both the brightest and darkest parts of an HDR scene, rather than judging the mode by a single bright-looking menu.

Confirm that Windows, the GPU, and the connection support HDR

Before changing picture settings, verify that the complete signal path is eligible. Select the intended monitor in Settings > System > Display and inspect the display capabilities section. Windows should identify HDR support before the Use HDR control is enabled.

External-display interfaces listed by Microsoft

For external HDR displays, Microsoft’s requirements refer to HDR10 and compatible connections. Its list includes DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, and Thunderbolt. The exact GPU output, monitor input, cable, and adapter still matter; a port on one device may not provide the same capability as a similarly named port on another.

Interfaces listed by VESA

VESA’s FAQ lists DisplayPort 1.2 or later, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, and HDMI 2.0a or 2.1. These lists come from different documentation contexts, so they are not a promise that every combination will work. The monitor and PC manufacturers’ specifications for your particular model and port are decisive.

What to check when HDR is missing

  • Confirm the monitor’s exact model specification says it accepts HDR, rather than only advertising a wide color gamut.
  • Check that the GPU supports HDR output and is connected to the monitor’s HDR-capable input.
  • Use a cable and adapter rated for the required resolution, refresh rate, and interface.
  • Install current graphics drivers, then restart Windows and re-open the display settings.
  • In Windows’ display capabilities page, verify that the selected monitor—not another screen in a multi-monitor setup—is the one being configured.

Enable HDR in Windows 11

Use these steps for an external display. Laptop controls can differ because the built-in panel and battery settings may add separate options.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. If more than one screen is connected, select the monitor you want to configure.
  3. Expand the display section and look for the capabilities information. Confirm that Windows reports HDR support.
  4. Turn on Use HDR.
  5. Open an HDR game or video and select its HDR output option if the title provides one. Some applications detect the Windows setting automatically; others require an in-app switch.
  6. View a familiar SDR application such as a browser or document editor. If it looks wrong, adjust the SDR brightness or HDR/SDR brightness balance described in the next section.

Do not judge the setting from a single menu. Check a white document page, a neutral gray interface, photographic skin tones, and an HDR scene with both highlights and shadows.

Fix SDR apps that look wrong while HDR is enabled

Adjust the SDR brightness balance

Windows provides an SDR content brightness or HDR/SDR brightness balance control for supported external displays. Move it gradually while viewing an SDR window. The aim is a comfortable white background and readable dark text, not maximum brightness.

Restart applications that do not respond

Microsoft notes that the balance setting may not affect some applications until they are restarted. Close the affected app completely, reopen it, and check again. If only one program remains wrong after a restart, it may have its own color-management or rendering limitation.

Use the monitor’s OSD for external-display brightness

On some external HDR monitors, Microsoft recommends lowering the Windows SDR brightness slider and using the monitor’s on-screen menu to set the desired physical brightness. Make one change at a time; changing both controls repeatedly makes it difficult to tell which adjustment solved the problem.

When SDR still looks desaturated or inaccurate

Some HDR-capable displays do not reproduce sRGB desktop colors correctly. Update the graphics driver and inspect the monitor’s color preset. If the display supports HDR over DisplayPort, Microsoft suggests trying DisplayPort instead of HDMI. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that DisplayPort will be better for every monitor.

Fix HDR that looks dim, washed out, or too vivid

Check that the content is actually HDR

Turning on Windows HDR does not convert an SDR game or video into native HDR. Confirm the title’s HDR setting, playback information, or on-screen indicator. If the source is SDR, compare it with Windows HDR off before changing calibration.

Reset conflicting monitor processing

Open the monitor OSD and look for an HDR picture preset, dynamic contrast, saturation boost, or other post-processing. Test the manufacturer’s neutral or default HDR preset first. If the monitor applies a vivid mode automatically, the Windows signal may be accurate while the monitor is altering it.

Check the connection and driver

Reinstall or update the graphics driver if colors are incorrect. Confirm that the selected input and cable support the required HDR signal at your chosen resolution and refresh rate. A connection that works for SDR can still fail to carry the HDR format at a higher bandwidth.

Compare with a known SDR reference

Open a familiar SDR image or document and compare it with HDR disabled. If whites, grays, and skin tones are only wrong in HDR mode, the issue is likely the SDR-in-HDR mapping or the monitor’s HDR profile rather than the source content.

Should you calibrate HDR?

Calibration is optional when a certified HDR display already looks correct. It becomes useful when highlights clip, dark details disappear, or the display’s brightness limits do not match what games or video expect.

Windows HDR Calibration app requirements

  • Windows 11.
  • An HDR-capable display with HDR enabled.
  • Full-screen app mode during the calibration process.
  • A supported, sufficiently recent GPU and graphics driver configuration.

What the app changes

Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app presents three patterns. You set the darkest visible detail, the brightest visible detail, and the display’s maximum brightness. Follow the pattern instructions rather than forcing every patch to be visible; the objective is to establish the panel’s usable limits.

Calibrate under normal viewing conditions

Use the same room lighting you normally use with the monitor. Ambient light changes how black levels and highlights appear, so a calibration performed in a dark room may not suit a bright office. Avoid increasing saturation until colors look unnatural. If the result is worse, return to the previous display profile and compare again.

When a meter is worthwhile

A colorimeter or spectroradiometer can measure the white-level difference between SDR and HDR. A smartphone light sensor can provide a cheap, basic indication, but VESA describes it as not highly accurate. Most people choosing between modes do not need a meter: first use the monitor controls and the Windows HDR Calibration app where supported. A meter is mainly for readers who specifically need measured luminance or more formal display calibration.

A practical workflow for mixed SDR and HDR use

  1. Set a reliable SDR baseline. With HDR off, choose the monitor’s neutral color preset and a comfortable brightness. Keep a familiar document or web page open.
  2. Verify capability. Select the correct screen in Windows Display settings and confirm HDR is reported. Check the GPU, input, cable, and required interface specification.
  3. Enable HDR and inspect SDR. Turn on Use HDR, then check white backgrounds, gray controls, black text, and photographs. Adjust the SDR balance only as much as needed.
  4. Test real HDR content. Use an HDR game or film with both bright highlights and dark areas. Confirm the application’s own HDR setting and look for detail at both ends of the range.
  5. Choose a daily default. Leave HDR on only if your normal SDR applications remain comfortable and accurate. Otherwise, use SDR for desktop work and enable HDR for HDR sessions.
  6. Document your settings. Note the Windows slider position, monitor OSD preset, and application HDR setting. This makes switching back after a driver or monitor reset much easier.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the HDR badge guarantees quality. HDR-capable monitors differ, and some handle sRGB desktop colors poorly.
  • Using HDR for all content because it sounds superior. HDR’s advantage is tied to HDR-authored material and correct tone mapping.
  • Changing several controls at once. Adjust Windows balance, monitor brightness, and OSD processing separately so you can identify the cause.
  • Ignoring application restarts. Some SDR apps do not apply the new balance until they are closed and reopened.
  • Comparing different scenes or presets. Use the same content and keep the monitor preset consistent when deciding.
  • Buying a meter before trying software controls. The built-in Windows calibration workflow and normal display controls solve many practical problems without measurement hardware.

Bottom line for different users

HDR-focused gamer or movie viewer

Enable HDR on a capable, preferably certified monitor and verify the game or player is outputting HDR. Keep it only if highlights, shadows, and colors look convincing without making the rest of the image distracting.

Office, study, or coding user

Use SDR as the default when most of your time is spent in documents, browsers, terminals, or productivity apps. Enable HDR for specific HDR content if switching is practical.

Mixed-workflow user

Test both modes for a full work session, not just a showroom clip. If SDR remains comfortable with HDR enabled, one setting may be convenient. If not, treat HDR as a content-specific mode rather than a permanent desktop setting.

User whose HDR option is unavailable

Work through the capability, connection, driver, and monitor checks before adjusting color or calibration. Windows cannot expose a reliable HDR control when the display path is not recognized as HDR-capable.
