Usually, an HDMI-to-RCA cable alone will not work for audio. HDMI carries digital audio, while the red and white RCA inputs on older amplifiers, receivers, and powered speakers expect an analog left/right signal. A passive cable only changes the connector arrangement; it does not perform the digital-to-analog conversion.
Use a powered HDMI audio extractor when you need stereo sound from an HDMI source, an ARC/eARC-to-RCA converter when you need audio returned from a television, or an HDMI-to-composite converter when the RCA equipment also needs a picture. The correct device depends on signal direction, audio format, TV port, and whether you need audio only or composite video plus audio.
Why a passive HDMI-to-RCA cable normally fails
HDMI and RCA describe different signal systems, not merely different plug shapes. HDMI transports a digital data stream that can contain video and multichannel audio. The red and white RCA sockets used for stereo are analog line-level inputs: red is normally the right channel and white (or black) is the left channel.

Plugging HDMI from a streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, or laptop into red and white RCA therefore gives the destination no usable analog audio. The cable may fit mechanically, but connector fit is not proof of electrical compatibility.

Some listings use “HDMI to RCA cable” as a shorthand for a powered converter that happens to include short cables. Verify that the product has active electronics, a stated HDMI input and RCA output, and a power supply or USB power requirement. If the listing only shows a passive lead and does not identify conversion circuitry, assume it cannot perform the conversion.
First identify the signal path you actually need
Three setups are often confused because all of them use HDMI and red/white RCA plugs. They require different hardware.
| What you are trying to do | Correct device category | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Send sound from an HDMI source to a stereo amplifier, powered speakers, or legacy line input | Powered HDMI audio extractor with analog RCA left/right output | HDMI input direction, PCM or stereo support, power, and source compatibility |
| Send a television’s sound to older stereo equipment through HDMI return audio | ARC/eARC-to-RCA converter | Correct TV ARC/eARC port and mode, TV settings, analog-output behavior in ARC mode, and supported audio format |
| Connect an HDMI source to a display with yellow, red, and white RCA sockets | HDMI-to-composite AV converter | Supported source resolution, NTSC/PAL output, stereo audio, power, and HDCP compatibility |
An audio extractor normally outputs only sound. A composite AV converter outputs yellow composite video as well as red/white analog audio. Buying the latter for a stereo-only connection can add unnecessary video limitations; buying the former cannot make a legacy RCA television display an HDMI picture.

Confirm input and output direction
Look for an explicit “HDMI in” and “RCA L/R out” description for source-to-stereo use. A device advertised as RCA-to-HDMI works in the opposite direction and will not extract audio from an HDMI source. For television audio, the HDMI connector must be labeled ARC or eARC on the converter and the TV must have the matching return-audio port.

Decide whether you need audio only or composite AV
If your destination is an amplifier or powered speaker with red and white line inputs, select an HDMI audio extractor with RCA stereo output. If your destination is an older monitor or television with yellow, red, and white inputs, select an HDMI-to-composite converter. The yellow socket carries composite video; it is not an audio channel and cannot replace the red or white connection.
Check audio-format requirements
Many analog outputs accept only two-channel PCM. If the HDMI source or TV sends Dolby, DTS, or another encoded bitstream, an extractor that lacks decoding or downmixing may remain silent. Set the source or TV digital-audio output to PCM, stereo, or a similar two-channel option when the converter’s manual requires it.
For example, the OREI DA25 is described by its manufacturer as converting PCM to two-channel stereo through RCA and 3.5 mm outputs. Its specifications state that it does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS and does not decode or downmix those formats. That limitation is typical of why the source setting matters: the analog output cannot be assumed to decode every HDMI audio format.

ARC and eARC are not interchangeable labels. ARC is the older HDMI audio-return mode; eARC supports a newer, higher-bandwidth return path. A converter must support the mode your television is using, and it must be connected to the port marked ARC or eARC. A manufacturer note for the J-Tech Digital EXD says, “Supports ARC, but not eARC.” That is a model-specific limitation, not a rule for all extractors.

Also verify which outputs remain active in ARC mode. One J-Tech model’s documentation describes ARC audio as available over optical rather than RCA, while another model may route ARC audio differently. Do not assume that an RCA output shown for normal HDMI extraction is automatically available when the unit is acting as an ARC receiver.
Check video requirements when using composite
Composite converters must translate a digital HDMI picture into analog composite video. Check the source-resolution range stated by the maker, whether the converter outputs NTSC or PAL, and whether your display uses the corresponding television standard. Confirm that the unit includes its required power supply or supports the specified USB power method. HDCP behavior can also affect protected content; consult the exact converter documentation rather than assuming every HDMI source is supported.
How to connect an HDMI source to stereo RCA equipment
This is the usual arrangement for a streaming device, console, disc player, or computer whose sound must feed an older amplifier or powered speaker.
- Choose an HDMI audio extractor with RCA left/right output. Confirm that the product’s diagram shows HDMI input and analog RCA output, not the reverse.
- Connect the source to the extractor’s HDMI input. Use the input labeled HDMI IN. If the extractor also has an HDMI output for a television, connect that output to the display; it is normally a pass-through connection.
- Connect the red and white RCA plugs to the stereo’s line-level input. Use an input labeled AUX, LINE, CD, or another ordinary line input. Do not use a turntable/phono input unless the equipment specifically says it accepts line-level output.
- Power the extractor. Plug in its supplied adapter or the specified USB power lead. A passive HDMI cable cannot substitute for this powered conversion stage.
- Select a compatible audio mode. If the extractor offers a switch such as 2CH, 5.1, or pass-through, choose two-channel or PCM for RCA stereo. If there is no switch, set the source’s HDMI audio output to PCM or stereo.
- Select the matching stereo input and test at low volume. Confirm that left and right channels are separated correctly. If one channel is missing, reseat the RCA plugs and test another line input before changing other settings.
The extractor’s HDMI pass-through, if present, does not make the television’s own speakers an analog source. It simply allows the HDMI picture and digital signal to continue to the display while the extractor takes an audio feed for the RCA output.

How to route TV sound through HDMI ARC or eARC
TV audio is a different path from ordinary source extraction. The television sends sound backward through its ARC/eARC HDMI port to a compatible converter or sound system.
- Locate the television’s labeled port. Find the HDMI socket marked ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input generally cannot send return audio.
- Match the converter’s mode. Use an ARC converter with an ARC television mode, or an eARC-capable converter when the TV is configured for eARC. If the converter supports only ARC, set the TV to ARC-compatible output where the menu permits it.
- Connect the ARC/eARC HDMI cable. Connect the TV’s labeled port to the converter’s ARC/eARC HDMI port, following the converter’s direction markings.
- Connect the converter’s analog output to the stereo. Use its red and white RCA outputs, or its documented analog alternative such as 3.5 mm if applicable.
- Enable HDMI-CEC/ARC settings as required by the TV. Menu names vary, but the television may require an HDMI control or ARC switch to be enabled before return audio is sent.
- Choose PCM or stereo output if the analog converter requires it. A TV set to Dolby or another bitstream can send an audio format the converter cannot decode.
- Check the converter’s ARC-mode output rules. Some products disable certain outputs or provide ARC audio through optical rather than RCA. The exact manual takes precedence over the product’s ordinary extraction diagram.
eARC capability does not guarantee that every eARC format will appear at an analog output. The converter still has to convert the supported return-audio format to two-channel analog, and its specification may exclude formats such as Dolby Atmos or DTS.
How to connect HDMI to a legacy composite RCA display
Use this path when the old display has three RCA sockets: yellow for composite video, red for right audio, and white for left audio.
- Select a powered HDMI-to-composite AV converter. Confirm that its outputs are explicitly labeled yellow video, red audio, and white audio.
- Connect the HDMI source to HDMI IN. The source may be a player, console, streaming device, or computer, but its output resolution must be within the converter’s stated support range.
- Connect the three RCA plugs to the display. Match yellow to video, red to right audio, and white to left audio. A red/white-only extractor cannot create the yellow picture signal.
- Set NTSC or PAL if the converter provides a selector. Choose the standard required by the display and region. A mismatch can produce an unstable, rolling, or absent picture.
- Power the converter and select the display’s AV input. Use the included adapter or the specified USB supply; USB power is not necessarily included unless the manufacturer says so.
- Set the source to a supported resolution and compatible audio mode. If the display shows no picture, reduce the source resolution within the converter’s documented range and check the converter’s HDCP notes.
Aluratek’s HDMI to RCA Converter is described by its manufacturer as connecting HDMI devices to legacy RCA display equipment, supporting 1080p signals, and outputting composite video and audio. The maker says it can be powered by USB or the included adapter. Cirago’s HDM2ACRCA is likewise listed with HDMI input, yellow/red/white RCA output, NTSC or PAL composite video, and left/right analog audio; its documentation lists USB power as optional. These descriptions identify the category, but they do not establish compatibility with every source or display.

Manufacturer-documented examples and what they illustrate
The following examples are useful for understanding feature differences. They are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent performance tests or a guarantee for an unspecified setup.
| Example | Manufacturer-stated function | Practical lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Aluratek HDMI to RCA Converter | HDMI devices to legacy RCA display equipment; 1080p support; composite video and audio output; USB or included-adapter power | This is a composite AV converter, not a passive stereo cable. |
| Cirago HDM2ACRCA | HDMI input; yellow/red/white RCA output; NTSC or PAL composite video; left/right analog audio; optional USB power | Check both the television standard and the power arrangement. |
| OREI DA25 | ARC/eARC-to-analog conversion with RCA and 3.5 mm outputs; PCM-to-two-channel stereo conversion | Set the TV to PCM/stereo when required; do not expect Dolby Atmos or DTS decoding. |
| J-Tech Digital EXD ARC | HDMI-to-RCA/optical extraction and TV ARC use; ARC support but not eARC; documented downmix and video specifications | ARC support is model-specific, and eARC support must be stated separately. |
| J-Tech Digital JTD18G-H5CH2 | RCA output described as analog stereo; documentation says RCA/analog output cannot support a digital audio format | An analog RCA output does not accept an encoded digital bitstream without the required conversion. |
Product specifications, availability, and prices can change. Before ordering, compare the exact model’s manual with your source, TV, and stereo rather than relying on a generic listing title.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
No sound from an HDMI source
- Confirm that the converter is powered and that the HDMI cable is in its input port.
- Verify that the RCA plugs are connected to a line-level stereo input and that the stereo is set to that input.
- Change the source audio output to PCM, two-channel, or stereo. Encoded Dolby or DTS can be incompatible with a basic analog extractor.
- Check any extractor switch for 2CH, stereo, or downmix mode.
- Test the source and extractor with another HDMI cable or display to isolate a handshake problem.
TV ARC produces no sound
- Move the HDMI cable to the TV socket labeled ARC or eARC; a normal HDMI input will not provide return audio.
- Confirm that the converter supports the TV’s active mode. An ARC-only converter will not automatically support eARC.
- Enable ARC/HDMI control in the TV settings and select the converter or external-audio output.
- Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM or stereo if the converter requires two-channel input.
- Read the model manual to see whether ARC audio is routed to RCA, optical, 3.5 mm, or only one of those outputs.
Picture works but audio does not on a composite converter
- Check that red is connected to right audio and white to left audio; yellow carries video only.
- Set the source audio to PCM/stereo if the converter does not decode compressed formats.
- Make sure the display is on its AV input and that the converter’s audio output is not muted or disabled by a mode switch.
No picture from an HDMI-to-composite converter
- Confirm that the source resolution is within the converter’s stated range.
- Choose the correct NTSC or PAL setting for the display.
- Check the yellow RCA connection and select the display’s composite/AV input.
- Review HDCP compatibility notes for protected HDMI content.
- Power-cycle the source, converter, and display to force a new HDMI handshake.
Only one channel or heavy noise
- Reseat both RCA plugs and try another line input on the stereo.
- Check that the stereo’s balance control is centered and that the source is outputting stereo rather than a channel-specific test mode.
- Keep the converter powered by its specified supply and avoid treating an unpowered passive cable as a substitute.
A quick buying decision
- Need only sound from an HDMI source? Buy a powered HDMI audio extractor with RCA left/right output.
- Need sound from a TV over HDMI? Buy an ARC/eARC-to-RCA converter that matches the TV’s labeled port and active mode.
- Need both picture and sound on a yellow/red/white display? Buy an HDMI-to-composite AV converter.
- Does the destination require PCM or two-channel audio? Confirm that the converter supports it and plan to change the source or TV audio setting.
- Does the product require power, NTSC/PAL selection, or a particular HDCP/resolution range? Verify each item in the exact model’s documentation before connecting it.
The decisive question is not whether an HDMI plug can be physically attached to an RCA plug. It is whether the device in between performs the required digital-to-analog conversion, in the correct direction, for the audio mode and video path your equipment uses.
