For a home theater or gaming setup, choose an HDMI switch by the exact signal you need it to pass—not by an “8K” label alone. If you want 4K/120Hz, verify that the switch explicitly supports that mode and the features your devices use, such as VRR and ALLM. Also check how many sources it accepts, how you select them, and the cable and power requirements.
What an HDMI switch does—and how many connections you need
An HDMI switch routes multiple source devices to one display. It is useful when, for example, a console and a PC need to share a TV or projector with one available HDMI input. The two HDMI 2.1 models discussed below each have two inputs and one output; a larger system needs a switch with more inputs.
A switch is not necessarily the right device when you need to send sources to multiple displays. Look at HDMI matrix devices instead, and verify their routing behavior: a matrix may offer combinations of inputs and outputs that do not match every desired setup.
How to match a switch to your video and gaming requirements
Start with the signal you want to use
Write down the resolution and refresh rate you want from each source, such as 4K at 120Hz. Then confirm that the switch explicitly lists that mode. Check bandwidth, chroma and color depth requirements where relevant, and confirm that the source, display, and any receiver in the path also support the mode.

For gaming, check VRR (variable refresh rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) separately. A switch must pass the particular features your console or PC and display use; a resolution or bandwidth claim does not establish support for every gaming feature.
Check the other compatibility details
Compare the listed HDR formats, HDCP, audio formats, and CEC support against your equipment. These capabilities vary by model. Also check the manufacturer’s cable guidance: a cable that works for a lower-resolution signal may not reliably carry a higher-bandwidth mode.

The HDMI Licensing Administrator’s bandwidth and resolutions overview describes HDMI 2.2 as a specification supporting bandwidth up to 96Gbps and modes including uncompressed 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz. Those are specification capabilities, not proof that a particular switch implements HDMI 2.2. Use each model’s documented feature list to decide what it can pass.

When the StarTech model may fit
The StarTech datasheet lists 4K/144Hz as well as 4K/120Hz, automatic and manual selection, a remote, and CEC. Its 4K/144Hz specification may matter for a compatible PC-and-display setup. The manufacturer also specifies a two-year warranty. Confirm the required HDMI 2.1a cables and check that the rest of your signal chain supports the mode you intend to use.
When the BZBGEAR model may fit
The BZBGEAR manual lists HDR format passthrough and FVA alongside VRR and ALLM, and identifies PS5 and Xbox Series X use for 4K/120Hz on compatible displays. It advises that both connected HDMI cables support the intended signal and warns that excessive cable length can cause flicker.

Control, power, and setup can matter as much as bandwidth
- Source selection: Automatic switching can be convenient, but consider whether it can be disabled if connected devices wake unexpectedly. Manual buttons or a remote provide direct control; confirm which the model includes.
- Power: Check how the switch is powered and whether the required cable or adapter is included. Both examples above have USB power arrangements, but their supplied accessories differ.
- Placement: Check the product’s mounting and cable arrangements against the space behind your display or receiver. Short, suitable cables can help avoid signal problems at high bandwidth.
- Port count: Count every source you plan to leave connected. If you need more than two inputs, compare higher-port models rather than assuming a 2-in/1-out switch will serve the whole setup.
When an HDMI 2.0 switch is enough
If your setup does not need 4K/120Hz, a model limited to 4K/60Hz may be adequate. Tom’s Guide’s 2022 roundup of HDMI switches describes HDMI 2.0 options with differing port counts, power arrangements, remote controls, and automatic switching. Do not pay for a feature your sources and display cannot use, but do not assume a lower-tier model will include conveniences such as a remote or auto-switching. Check each model’s specifications and included accessories.

A practical compatibility checklist
- Count your sources and decide whether they need to share one display. If you need separate displays, investigate a matrix device instead.
- Identify the target resolution and refresh rate for the source you care about most, then confirm that exact mode appears in the switch’s specifications.
- Check VRR, ALLM, HDR formats, HDCP, audio formats, and CEC individually against your source, display, and receiver requirements.
- Confirm the switching method, power arrangement, included accessories, and whether automatic switching can be disabled if needed.
- Use cables that the manufacturer says support the intended signal, and check cable length if flicker or intermittent picture loss occurs.
- Verify that every device in the signal chain supports the desired mode; a capable switch cannot make an incompatible source, receiver, display, or cable support it.
