Start by checking that the display is powered on and set to the HDMI input your Mac is using, then reseat the cable at both ends. If your Mac lacks a built-in HDMI port, you need a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter or cable. If the display still is not detected, check macOS Displays settings, then test the connection without a hub.
Check the connection before changing settings
- Confirm the display is ready. Turn it on and use its input menu to select the HDMI port connected to the Mac.
- Match the cable to the Mac’s port. A Mac with an HDMI port can connect directly. If yours has only USB-C or Thunderbolt video ports, use a compatible adapter or cable. For USB-C or Thunderbolt adapters, check that the relevant product supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4, as applicable to your Mac and setup. Apple’s Mac display connection guide and USB-C and Thunderbolt adapter guide explain connection options.
- Reseat the cable. Unplug it from both the Mac or adapter and the display, then reconnect it firmly. A powered, properly connected display should be detected automatically, according to Apple Support.
If your Mac does not detect the HDMI display
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Hold the Option key to reveal Detect Displays, then select it.
- If the display remains missing, disconnect and reconnect the video cable and display power. Put the Mac to sleep and wake it, or restart the Mac.
- If you have an Apple silicon Mac laptop and macOS asks you to approve the connected accessory, approve it. Apple notes that the display remains dark if permission is not granted.
These steps follow Apple’s guidance for a dark or low-resolution external display. Menu wording can vary by macOS version; older releases use System Preferences rather than System Settings.
If the screen is black, blurry, or limited to a low refresh rate
Bypass hubs and docks
If the display is connected through a hub or dock, connect it to a port on the Mac directly while troubleshooting. This helps determine whether the hub is part of the problem; it does not establish that the hub is faulty.
Check the entire video chain
The Mac model, display, cable, adapter, and any other connected displays all affect which resolution and refresh rate are available. Apple warns that an unsupported cable or adapter can leave an external display dark or force it to use a lower resolution or refresh rate. Check the specifications for each component and the Mac’s supported display count and modes rather than assuming that an adapter that produces a picture supports every mode.

Check display controls and macOS settings
If macOS detects the display but it stays dark, check the display’s brightness, physical controls, and selected input. In System Settings > Displays, review the resolution and refresh-rate options and choose a mode supported by the complete setup. Update macOS; for a third-party display, check its manufacturer’s instructions and firmware guidance. See Apple’s dark or low-resolution display troubleshooting steps.
If HDMI video works but there is no sound
Audio output is selected separately from video. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound (or System Preferences > Sound on older macOS versions), open the Output pane, and select the HDMI display or connected audio device. If you use a Mac mini, disconnect a device from its headphone jack and check HDMI audio again. Apple includes these steps in Connect to HDMI from your Mac.

- The USB-C digital AV multiport adapter lets you connect your USB-C enabled Mac or iPad to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable. This adapter allows you to mirror your Mac Display to your HDMI-enabled TV or display.
- Simply connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac or select iPad model and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
- Use the standard USB port to connect devices such as your flash drive or camera or a USB cable for syncing and charging your iOS devices. You can also connect a charging cable to the USB-C port to charge your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
- System Requirements: macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later; iOS 12.4 or later
- Requires an HDMI cable (sold separately) for connection to your TV or projector. Supports both video and audio output.
For 8K or other high-resolution, high-refresh HDMI setups
Do not assume that an HDMI connection supports 8K or a particular high refresh rate simply because video appears. Apple’s guidance for its documented 8K setups calls for an Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps HDMI cable and a direct connection from a Mac HDMI port to the display for the highest resolution and refresh rate. The Mac and display must also support the intended mode; some displays may require enabling 8K or variable refresh rate (VRR) in their own menus. These recommendations are specific to compatible setups, not a guarantee that every Mac can drive an 8K display. See Apple’s 8K display guidance and its Mac HDMI connection information.

Consider a replacement if the cable is damaged or its documented capabilities do not meet the resolution and refresh rate you want. If the Mac has no HDMI port, choose a USB-C or Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter or cable that matches the Mac and display. Verify compatibility for the exact Mac model and the other displays connected; buying an adapter is not a universal fix for a black screen. For Apple’s documented 8K setup, use the specified Ultra High Speed 48 Gbps cable and direct connection where required.
