The best HDMI home theater depends on what you need it to do: a packaged 5.1 system gives you separate speakers with a receiver, while a multi-piece soundbar is easier to place and can include wireless surrounds. For gaming or high-refresh video, check the exact HDMI ports and supported modes—not just an “HDMI 2.1” label. For immersive audio, also confirm the speaker layout, room, TV, and content all support the formats you want.
What makes an HDMI home theater a good fit?
HDMI carries audio and video between a source, display, and audio system; it does not, by itself, improve picture or sound quality. The result depends on the capabilities and settings of every device in the chain, as well as the content. Compare a system on these points:
- Sound: Consider dialogue, bass, surround separation, Atmos playback, and music use. Channel count and amplifier wattage alone do not prove how a system sounds.
- Video path: Check the number of HDMI inputs, supported refresh rates and resolutions, eARC, and HDR formats. Confirm whether a console or player can connect through the audio system or should connect directly to the TV.
- Package and layout: Find out whether the system includes a subwoofer and rear speakers, and whether it is a receiver-based package or a soundbar with additional speakers.
- Room and setup: Account for speaker placement, available wiring, ceiling shape and height for upward-firing Atmos modules, and whether automatic room calibration is included.
- Compatibility and value: Verify the TV, source device, audio system, and content support the same desired audio and video features. Compare the current local price, included components, warranty, and upgrade options.

Does HDMI 2.1 matter for 4K/120 gaming?
It matters if you want a console or PC to send 4K at 120Hz through the receiver or soundbar and on to the TV. Verify that the specific input and output support the required mode; a model name or HDMI version label alone does not establish that every port supports it. For example, Yamaha lists 4K120 (AB) among the YHT-5960U’s supported modes, while What Hi-Fi? lists the HW-Q990F’s passthrough up to 4K/120Hz. These are model-specific claims, not guarantees for other products.
If the audio system does not pass the video mode you need, connect the source directly to a compatible TV HDMI input and use eARC to send audio back to the system, if both TV and audio system support the required connection and format. Check HDR compatibility as well as resolution and refresh rate: a working 4K signal does not prove that every HDR format or gaming feature will pass through.

What does eARC do, and when do you need it?
eARC is the HDMI return path that sends audio from a TV to a receiver or soundbar. Yamaha says eARC can carry full-resolution multichannel formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD when compatible equipment and content are used. The TV and audio system must both support eARC, and the content and settings must provide the format you want. Check each device’s specifications rather than assuming that one eARC port guarantees every format across the chain.
Should you choose Atmos, a soundbar, or a 5.1 speaker package?
Choose a receiver-based 5.1 package for separate speakers
A packaged receiver system like the YHT-5960U combines the receiver, subwoofer, and surround speakers, giving you distinct speaker positions rather than relying on a single bar to create a sense of space. It takes more placement and wiring work. Its listed 5.1-channel configuration should not be confused with Atmos support, which Yamaha’s cited product description does not state for this model.

Choose an Atmos system only if the whole setup supports it
Dolby Atmos uses audio objects rendered for the playback speaker configuration. Dolby says it can be played through an enabled soundbar or an Atmos AV receiver with speakers. For overhead sound, Dolby says at least two overhead or Atmos-enabled speakers are needed and recommends four for its best experience. The source and content must also provide Atmos.
Upward-firing modules reflect sound off the ceiling, so room conditions matter. Dolby says these modules work best with reflective ceilings between 2.3 and 4.3 meters (7.5 to 14 feet). A different ceiling height or surface may make that approach less suitable; consider speaker placement and system guidance before choosing.

Choose a soundbar package for simpler placement
A soundbar with a subwoofer and wireless rear speakers can reduce the need to run speaker wire across the room, though the surrounds still need sensible placement and power. Systems vary in their HDMI connections: the HW-Q990F is described with 4K/120 passthrough, while What Hi-Fi? says the Sonos Arc Ultra has eARC but no passthrough and the JBL Bar 1000MK2 passes through up to 4K/60Hz. Pick based on the connections you actually need, not the form factor alone.

Room layout influences how speakers are heard. Yamaha says YPAO uses a supplied microphone to analyze room acoustics and adjust audio parameters for the room. Calibration can help tailor a system, but it does not replace placing speakers appropriately or confirming that the room suits upward-firing Atmos modules.

Before setup, map the intended signal route: source to receiver or soundbar to TV for passthrough, or source to TV and TV back to audio system over eARC. Then check port labels and device menus for the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio formats you intend to use. If a feature is missing, test the same source connected directly to the TV; this can help isolate whether passthrough is the limitation.
Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- List your sources and display goals. Note whether you use a 4K/120 console or PC, which HDR formats matter, and whether the TV has enough suitable HDMI inputs.
- Choose the system type. Pick a receiver package for separate-speaker flexibility, a soundbar package for a simpler installation, or a component receiver setup if you want to select speakers separately.
- Match the audio format and layout. Confirm Atmos support at the system, source, and content levels; for Atmos, factor in speaker requirements and room suitability.
- Verify every HDMI link. Check the exact input and output modes, eARC support, HDR formats, and whether the source should connect to the TV or audio system.
- Inspect what is included. Confirm the subwoofer, surrounds, speaker wire, calibration microphone, and any required cables are part of the exact regional package.
- Compare local terms and price. Check current stock, warranty, and upgrade options because prices and bundles vary over time and by region.
