HDMI 2.2 doubles the specification’s maximum link bandwidth to 96Gbps, up from HDMI 2.1b’s 48Gbps. That extra headroom is for higher-bandwidth video combinations—not an automatic picture-quality upgrade for an existing TV or a benefit a new cable can create by itself. If every device in your setup needs 48Gbps or less, a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the relevant category; a system that needs more requires a certified Ultra96 cable and HDMI 2.2-capable devices across the signal path.

HDMI 2.2 vs. HDMI 2.1b at a glance

The central difference is bandwidth: HDMI 2.2 specifies a maximum of 96Gbps, while HDMI 2.1b tops out at 48Gbps. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. (HDMI LA) lists higher headline video modes for HDMI 2.2, including up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. It also lists uncompressed, full-chroma 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz at 10-bit and 12-bit color. These are specification capabilities, not guarantees that a particular television, source, receiver, or cable supports those modes.

The figures above describe specification ceilings and listed modes, not the capabilities of every product carrying an HDMI port. HDMI LA says manufacturers can implement compressed and uncompressed modes differently. Before assuming a particular resolution, refresh rate, chroma format, bit depth, or feature will work, check the specifications for the source, display, and any equipment between them.

What the higher 96Gbps limit changes

Bandwidth is the capacity of the link to carry data. A video mode’s demands depend on more than its resolution: refresh rate, color depth, chroma format, and whether the signal is compressed all affect how much capacity is needed. Doubling the maximum link bandwidth gives HDMI 2.2 more room for combinations that exceed the 48Gbps ceiling. It does not mean that every image is sharper, smoother, or more colorful just because a port or cable is associated with 2.2.

Higher-resolution and faster-refresh combinations

The clearest potential benefit is support for video modes that require more bandwidth than an HDMI 2.1b link can carry. HDMI LA’s HDMI 2.2 overview lists up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz, along with uncompressed full-chroma 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz using either 10-bit or 12-bit color. These modes illustrate what the specification can accommodate; they do not establish that a particular product supports them or that a user’s entire setup can pass them through.

Resolution and refresh rate alone are not enough to determine whether a connection will work. For example, two modes described as 4K at 240Hz can have different link requirements if their color depth, chroma, or compression differs. HDMI LA’s material identifies specific 4K240 and 8K60 full-chroma modes as uncompressed, but it does not turn those example modes into a blanket promise about all products. Use the device maker’s specifications to confirm the exact mode and signal format.

Uncompressed and compressed signals

HDMI 2.2 supports VESA Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2a link compression, which HDMI LA describes as visually lossless. A manufacturer may support compressed modes, uncompressed modes, or both. Compression can make a high-demand mode possible within a link’s capacity, but you should not infer that a device uses DSC—or that it supports a particular compressed mode—from the HDMI version number alone.

When comparing products, look for the complete supported video format rather than a headline such as “4K” or “8K.” The useful details are resolution, refresh rate, chroma, bit depth, and whether the mode is specified as compressed or uncompressed. Also check whether the mode applies to a particular port, input, or operating setting: the version label does not settle those implementation questions.

What changes technically: FRL, LIP, and retained features

Next-generation FRL

HDMI 2.2 uses next-generation Fixed Rate Link (FRL) for its higher-bandwidth operation. FRL is required for higher uncompressed modes above 4K at 60Hz and for high-bandwidth operation. HDMI also retains Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) for backwards compatibility. In practical terms, HDMI 2.2’s top-end capability depends on compatible signaling hardware, not just a new cable.

HDMI LA says implementing FRL is likely to require new hardware rather than a simple firmware update, although upgradeability depends on the manufacturer’s design. That means an update should not be assumed to turn an existing HDMI 2.1b port into a 96Gbps HDMI 2.2 port. Check with the device manufacturer for the capabilities of a specific product; a specification-level description cannot establish whether that model can be upgraded.

Latency Indication Protocol

HDMI 2.2 adds Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which exchanges latency information to help synchronize audio and video. HDMI LA highlights multi-hop arrangements—such as a source connected through an AV receiver or soundbar—as a use case. LIP is about communicating latency information along the signal path; it is not a general guarantee that every audio-video sync problem will disappear. For a benefit, the relevant devices in the chain must support and implement it.

Features that are not exclusive to HDMI 2.2

Higher bandwidth and LIP are the important changes to distinguish from features that HDMI continues to support. HDMI LA lists Dynamic HDR, Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM), eARC, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), and Quick Media Switching (QMS) among the specification’s features. HDMI 2.2 does not make these newly exclusive to 2.2. A device’s support still depends on its implementation, so the HDMI version by itself is not proof that a particular feature is present.

SBTM lets a source perform part of HDR tone mapping. That describes what the feature enables, not a claim that every HDMI 2.2 source or display uses it. Similarly, the presence of a feature in the HDMI specification does not mean that every device with an HDMI port supports it. Confirm the feature in the product specifications for the devices you plan to connect.

Which HDMI cable do you need?

Choose the cable category according to the maximum bandwidth your complete setup needs, not the largest version number you see in a listing. HDMI LA identifies Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for systems up to 48Gbps and Ultra96 HDMI cable for HDMI 2.2 applications up to 96Gbps. Both categories work with earlier HDMI devices. A compliant cable package should display its official certification label.

48Gbps or less Certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable For a link within the category’s bandwidth limit; it does not add features or bandwidth to the devices.

Check the whole signal chain

In a direct connection, the source and display both need to support the desired signal. If an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or other device sits between them, that device is another link to verify. The system is limited by the components and connections that cannot carry the requested mode. A cable upgrade alone cannot provide new ports, signaling hardware, supported resolutions, or HDMI features.

  1. Identify the exact mode you want. Write down resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma, and whether you require an uncompressed signal. “4K” alone is not a complete mode specification.
  2. Check the source’s output specifications. Confirm that the relevant output supports the full mode and any required feature. Do not treat the device’s general HDMI version as a substitute for its listed output capabilities.
  3. Check every device between source and display. Verify that a receiver, soundbar, switch, or adapter supports the same signal format on the ports you intend to use.
  4. Check the display’s input specifications. Confirm that the particular input accepts the desired mode. A display’s maximum resolution does not necessarily establish its maximum refresh rate or supported color format.
  5. Choose the cable category for the required bandwidth. For a requirement no greater than 48Gbps, use a certified Ultra High Speed cable. If the HDMI 2.2 application requires more than 48Gbps, use a certified Ultra96 cable.
  6. Verify certification on the packaging. Look for the official label for the cable category. A retailer’s use of an HDMI version number is not, on its own, evidence of certification.

This check matters even if every component is advertised as HDMI 2.2. The standard permits different implementations, and a chain only works at a mode that its source, intervening equipment, display, and cable can all support. If the mode is not listed for one of those devices, do not assume the version label fills in the gap.

Do you need HDMI 2.2?

Most people do not need to replace a working cable simply because HDMI 2.2 has been adopted as a specification. The practical question is whether a planned or existing system needs more than 48Gbps. If its maximum required link bandwidth is 48Gbps or less, the 96Gbps ceiling does not, by itself, give you a reason to upgrade. If you are planning a mode above 48Gbps, then the source, display, any devices in between, and cable must all be suitable for that requirement.

If you have a 1080p or 4K television

HDMI LA’s FAQ asks whether owners of a 1080p or 4K television should buy an Ultra HDMI cable. Its answer notes that these cable installations can benefit from low-EMI testing. That is a cable characteristic, not evidence that every 4K television needs Ultra96 bandwidth. Match the cable to the signal requirements of your actual devices; do not buy the higher-capacity category on the assumption that it will improve picture quality or unlock a mode the equipment does not support.

If you want 4K at 120Hz

Start with the product specifications for the exact 4K120 format you intend to use. Check color depth, chroma, compression, and the supported port on each device. The phrase “4K at 120Hz” alone does not prove that the connection exceeds 48Gbps or requires HDMI 2.2. If the full chain supports the desired mode within 48Gbps, an officially certified Ultra High Speed cable is the appropriate category; if the required mode exceeds that ceiling, an Ultra96 cable is the relevant category for a compatible HDMI 2.2 system.

If you are buying equipment for a future high-bandwidth setup

Consider HDMI 2.2 when the format you want actually calls for bandwidth above 48Gbps or when you have a specific need for a 2.2 feature such as LIP. Confirm support at the device level rather than relying on a future-facing product description. HDMI LA says a product cannot claim HDMI 2.2 compliance or market support for 2.2 features until it complies with Version 2.2 of the specification and passes the applicable Compliance Test Specification (CTS). The specification was announced on June 25, 2025; that announcement does not establish adoption by any particular television, graphics card, console, receiver, or cable listing.

Will an HDMI 2.2 cable work with an HDMI 2.1 TV?

HDMI cables can work with earlier HDMI devices, so an Ultra96 cable can be used in a setup that includes an older television. The connection will still be limited by the capabilities of the devices: putting a higher-capacity cable between HDMI 2.1b equipment does not turn either device into HDMI 2.2 hardware. For a setup that needs no more than 48Gbps, a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is already the relevant category.

Compatibility is therefore not the same as capability. Backwards compatibility lets a cable connect with earlier HDMI devices; it does not guarantee every feature, signal format, or maximum bandwidth. Check the specifications for the television’s input and the source’s output, as well as any intervening device, before expecting a particular mode.

How to evaluate HDMI 2.2 product claims

HDMI 2.2 is an adopted specification, but a specification announcement does not prove that a particular product supports it. HDMI LA’s compliance guidance is especially important when a listing claims HDMI 2.2: manufacturers must comply with Version 2.2 and pass the applicable CTS before claiming 2.2 compliance or marketing support for 2.2 features. Treat a cable listing’s version wording as insufficient proof of cable certification.

  • Look for the official certification label on compliant cable packaging.
  • For electronics, read the manufacturer’s supported modes and features for the exact product and port.
  • Check the entire connection, including receivers, soundbars, switches, and adapters.
  • Separate a maximum specification capability from a manufacturer’s implementation and from a mode you can actually use.

HDMI LA announced the HDMI 2.2 specification on June 25, 2025. That establishes the specification’s announcement date, not when compatible equipment will be available or which products have passed compliance testing. No general availability date, named product adoption, or market-wide consumer benefit follows from the specification alone.
