Yes—some online daters now use artificial intelligence to polish profiles, draft opening messages, improve photos, or offer matching advice. Adoption is growing but uneven, and the strongest evidence concerns early-stage wording rather than lasting relationship outcomes. The same tools also raise authenticity, privacy, bot and romance-scam risks.
How common is AI use in online dating?
There is no single trend line because major surveys used different samples and dates. The 2024 Singles in America study surveyed more than 5,000 U.S. singles aged 18–77. It found that 14% of people who date online had experimented with AI, compared with 6% of all singles. A 2025 Kinsey Institute summary of an annual Match/Kinsey survey reported AI use among 26% of respondents and 38% of active daters. Those figures describe different populations and years, so they should not be combined as a precise growth rate.
Use also varies by country and task. In the U.S. study, 43% of U.S. AI users said they used it to write a dating-app profile and 37% used it for a first message. In a German Bitkom Research survey conducted during weeks 1–3 of 2025, 19% of dating-platform users reported using AI-generated chat text and 18% used AI to create or improve profile images.

What people are actually asking AI to do
Profiles and first messages
Writing is the clearest use case. A user might ask an AI assistant to turn notes about hobbies into a concise profile, remove clichés, check tone, or suggest an opening question based on a match’s stated interests. Editing your own words is materially different from allowing software to invent a personality, occupation, travel history or emotional story.

Photos and visual presentation
Some daters use AI to improve lighting, crop an image or generate a more polished portrait. Nearly half of U.S. singles said they would draw the line at an AI-altered image, showing how strongly visual manipulation can affect consent and expectations. An image that changes your face, body, age or surroundings can create a misleading identity even when the underlying photo is yours.
Advice and matching help
AI can suggest conversation topics or help a nervous user identify an overly abrupt message. These are support functions, not evidence that an algorithm can determine compatibility. No published figure in the cited surveys proves that AI improves long-term relationship quality.

Does AI produce better matches?
Some users believe it helps at the earliest stage. In Singles in America, 32% of people who had used AI for online dating said it helped them get better matches and meet potential partners faster. In McAfee’s January 2024 survey of 7,000 adults across the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, India and Japan, 81% of Indian respondents reported more interest and better responses when using AI-generated content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese are self-reported perceptions, not controlled measurements of dates, compatibility or relationship durability. They may reflect clearer writing, greater confidence or more activity rather than better matching technology. Treat “better matches” claims as an early-funnel impression unless a service publishes independently measured outcomes.

Where should you draw the authenticity line?
Norms are still forming, but survey responses show clear boundaries:
- Nearly 50% of U.S. singles said an AI-altered image would be unacceptable.
- 39% opposed a match using AI in every conversation.
- The 2025 Kinsey Institute summary found that 33% considered an entirely AI-generated conversation a dealbreaker.
A practical standard is to keep the substance and emotional meaning yours. Use software to correct grammar, shorten a paragraph or brainstorm questions, then review every line before sending. If AI substantially wrote a profile or exchange, consider disclosing that fact rather than letting a match assume the words are spontaneous.

Why scams and bots are the central risk
AI makes convincing text, images and scripted conversations cheaper to produce, which complicates identity checks. McAfee’s survey found that 77% of Indian respondents had encountered fake profiles or photos that appeared AI-generated; 39% said an online love interest turned out to be a scammer, and 26% said a supposed love interest was actually an AI-generated bot. In Germany, 63% of dating-platform users in Bitkom’s 2025 survey worried that a match might be an AI chatbot.

These results measure reported experiences and concerns, not the share of all profiles that are automated. They do show why fluent messages or attractive photos are not proof of a real person.

How to check a suspicious match
- Slow down. Be cautious when messages are generic, unusually intense or arrive at machine-like speed.
- Keep conversations on-platform. Do not open links sent by someone you have not met, particularly links requesting a login, payment or download.
- Check images. Use a reputable reverse-image-search tool to see whether a profile photo appears under another name or on unrelated websites.
- Verify in a low-risk way. A brief video call can test whether a person is consistent, but it is not a guarantee against impersonation or manipulation.
- Never send money or gifts. Do not pay travel costs, medical bills, emergencies, investments or “fees” for someone you have not met in person.
- Tell someone you trust. An outside perspective can identify pressure, secrecy or contradictions that are harder to see inside a new romance.
McAfee advises balancing romantic hope with healthy skepticism, pausing before sharing sensitive information, and using tools that protect privacy, identity and personal information.
What to compare when choosing AI dating help
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How much does it generate? | Profile editing is less deceptive and easier to review than an automated, end-to-end conversation. |
| Is use disclosed? | Disclosure lets a match decide whether the interaction meets their authenticity expectations. |
| What happens to your data? | Check retention, training use, deletion controls and whether private messages or photos are shared with third parties. |
| What safeguards exist? | Look for protections against impersonation, scams and manipulated images, not just writing quality. |
| What evidence supports claims? | Separate self-reported survey satisfaction from independently measured matching or relationship outcomes. |
What verification can and cannot solve
TransUnion’s 2025 online-dating survey found that 70% of users were concerned about scams, more than two-thirds were more likely to contact verified profiles, and substantial minorities were willing to pay for background checks. Verification can reduce uncertainty about a specific account attribute, but a badge does not establish honesty, compatibility or good intentions. Consider what exactly has been checked, who performed it and how recently.
The practical answer
Using AI as a light editor or brainstorming partner can help people express themselves, especially when writing feels difficult. Sending an entirely machine-generated identity or conversation creates a trust problem and may violate a match’s boundaries. Keep facts, feelings and decisions yours; disclose substantial assistance; protect personal data; and treat requests for money, secrecy or urgent off-platform contact as warning signs. Current surveys support cautious help with early wording—not a claim that AI creates lasting relationship success.
