Haunted Chocolatier, the in-development game from Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone (ConcernedApe), is planned as an RPG/simulation centered on running a chocolate shop—not a farm. Barone describes it as more of an action RPG than Stardew Valley, with combat playing a greater role. It remains in development, and no release date has been announced.
What kind of game is Haunted Chocolatier?
The official description calls Haunted Chocolatier an RPG/simulation. Barone’s more specific comparison is that it is “more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley.” That points to a stronger combat focus than in his earlier game, rather than another farming simulator.
The announced premise puts you in a haunted castle, where you gather rare ingredients, make chocolate, and sell it through a shop. Getting to know townspeople and progressing in different ways are also part of the design. Barone has described multiple ways to make chocolate, though the details may change during development.

How it differs from Stardew Valley
| Aspect | Haunted Chocolatier | Stardew Valley |
|---|---|---|
| Central activity | Gather ingredients, make chocolate, and run a shop. | Build and manage a farm. |
| Combat | Combat is intended to have a greater focus. | Combat is not the central activity described for the game. |
| Town life and progression | Some town-game elements, including getting to know townspeople and progressing in different ways. | Shares the broad town-life and progression elements Barone has referenced. |
This is a comparison of the developer’s announced direction, not a final feature checklist. Barone has also clarified that the games are separate: Haunted Chocolatier is being written from scratch on a different engine, and its content will not simply be added to Stardew Valley.

Is Haunted Chocolatier released yet?
No. The game is still in development, and Barone has not announced a release date or even an estimated date. In an official update on August 30, 2026, he said he was making progress and had been productive, while emphasizing: “I won’t compromise on the quality of the game by rushing it or releasing it too early.”
An earlier “I hope so” response about a five-year timeframe was not a release commitment; Barone explicitly clarified that in a January 2026 post. Treat any specific launch year or date as unconfirmed unless he announces one.
