Yes—Home Assistant Green is the clearest subscription-free alternative to Google Home Premium for local smart-home control. Home Assistant’s core software has no required subscription and no features locked behind a paywall. Green is the vendor’s plug-and-play hub, so it can coordinate compatible lights, switches, sensors and routines locally. It does not reproduce Google’s Gemini features or Nest camera cloud services one for one, however, and remote access or Google Assistant voice control may require an optional cloud plan.

What Google Home Premium charges for

Google announced Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025, as the replacement for Nest Aware. In the United States, the Standard tier costs $10 per month or $100 per year. Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers may receive Premium benefits as part of those plans.

Google Home Premium tier Price (US) Documented additions
Standard $10 monthly or $100 annually Gemini Live, Ask Home automation help, 30 days of video history and intelligent camera alerts
Advanced $20 monthly or $200 annually Everything in Standard, plus AI event descriptions, Home Brief summaries and searchable video history with Ask Home

Google’s support and Store comparison pages caution that camera alerts, video history, Gemini for Home, media playback, broadcast and parental controls vary by plan and hardware. A subscription therefore buys a package of cloud and AI capabilities, not a universal feature set that behaves identically on every device.

What Home Assistant Green provides without a required fee

Home Assistant’s official FAQ states: “There is no subscription to use it, and no features are locked behind a paywall.” Green is the recommended plug-and-play hardware for people who want the least complicated start. Home Assistant can also run on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC or virtual machine, but those options leave you responsible for selecting, preparing and maintaining the host.

  • Home Assistant provides a professional and reliable platform for home automation, designed to run continuously 24/7.
  • Powered by a 64-bit Quad-Core Cortex-A53 processor, delivering smooth and efficient performance for smart home automations.
  • Includes 4GB SDRAM for reliable multitasking and 64GB eMMC
  • Features a Mali-450 MP2 GPU for responsive visual interfaces, housed in a compact 85 × 85 × 15mm (3.35" × 3.35" × 0.59") design that fits easily in any space.
  • Typical power consumption is under 10W, with fanless operation for quiet performance suitable for any room in your home.

Local control and automation

Green can centralize compatible devices and execute automations on your network. That makes routines—such as turning on lights when a sensor detects motion or adjusting heating on a schedule—independent of a recurring Google service fee. Local operation can also reduce dependence on an internet connection for everyday automations, although each device’s own connectivity and integration requirements still apply.

What it does not replicate

The available documentation does not establish Green as a one-for-one replacement for Gemini Live, Ask Home, Nest’s cloud video history, Home Brief summaries or Google’s proprietary camera intelligence. If your reason for paying is AI-generated camera descriptions, searchable Nest footage or Gemini conversations, Green alone should not be presented as an equivalent.

How to move from a paid plan to Green

  1. List the features you actually use. Separate local routines and device control from Gemini interactions, camera alerts, searchable footage and remote access. This determines whether Green can replace the service or only the automation portion.
  2. Check device compatibility. Confirm that your lights, locks, sensors, thermostats and other equipment have Home Assistant integrations before buying or migrating. Compatibility is the deciding practical constraint, not the absence of a subscription.
  3. Install Home Assistant Green on your home network. Green is the official plug-and-play option. Follow its setup flow, connect it to your network and create your Home Assistant account.
  4. Pair devices and rebuild routines. Add integrations, organize devices and recreate automations. Test each routine locally before removing any existing Google configuration.
  5. Decide on remote access and voice. If you need access while away from home or want Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa control, evaluate Home Assistant Cloud rather than assuming those features are included for free.
  6. Keep or replace camera services deliberately. Green may coordinate compatible cameras, but the documented comparison does not promise Google’s AI alerts, Gemini descriptions or Nest video retention. Retain a separate camera service if those functions are essential.

When the optional Home Assistant Cloud plan makes sense

Home Assistant Cloud is optional, not a prerequisite for running Green. Nabu Casa says it adds secure remote access, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integrations, plus speech-to-text and text-to-speech services. Those are convenience and integration features layered on top of the local hub; choosing them means accepting another recurring service for those specific capabilities.

Nabu Casa says the service is planned to be renamed Home Assistant Link on December 2, 2026. Treat that as a planned naming change, not evidence that the underlying service or its pricing is already different.

Who should choose which setup?

Choose Home Assistant Green when

  • You want local automations without a mandatory monthly payment.
  • Your priority is controlling a mixed set of compatible smart-home devices from one hub.
  • You are willing to configure integrations and accept that voice or remote access may be optional paid add-ons.

Keep Google Home Premium when

  • Gemini Live or Ask Home is central to how you use your home.
  • You rely on Nest camera history, searchable footage, AI event descriptions or Home Brief summaries.
  • You prefer Google’s managed setup and your devices receive the relevant plan features.

Use a hybrid setup when

  • You want Home Assistant to run local routines while retaining Google’s camera or AI services.
  • You need Google or Alexa voice control and are prepared to add Home Assistant Cloud.
  • Your household has both Home Assistant-compatible devices and Google-only features that have no documented local substitute.

Bottom line

Home Assistant Green can eliminate the subscription cost for the core job most people mean by “smart-home hub”: centralized device control and automations. It cannot honestly be described as a free replacement for Google Home Premium’s Gemini, Nest cloud-video history or proprietary camera intelligence. Choose Green for local, subscription-free automation; keep Google’s service, add optional Home Assistant Cloud, or run both when remote access, voice integration or Google-specific camera and AI features matter.
