What each clock is actually designed to do

Hatch Restore 3: a configurable sleep routine

Restore 3 is positioned as a smart sleep clock rather than only a light-based alarm. You use the Hatch app to configure a routine combining light, sound, and timing. After setup, Hatch says the routine can run with your phone down, so the intended workflow is to prepare the schedule in advance rather than keep using a phone at bedtime.

Its sunrise alarm lets you create a custom light-and-sound combination. The light gradually brightens, and the alarm sound begins after the sunrise sequence has completed. That makes the device suitable for someone who wants a staged wake-up rather than an abrupt tone, but the reviewed Hatch instructions do not publish a directly comparable 15–90-minute duration range.

The same routine approach applies to winding down. You can use light cues and sleep audio as part of a bedtime sequence, then control the device at the bedside. The proposition is less about radio or a large menu of clock-native settings and more about making a repeatable environment for sleep.

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300: a clock-first sunrise and sunset alarm

Shine 300 is a wake-up light with a built-in set of alarm and bedside-lighting functions. Lumie lists an adjustable 15–90-minute sunrise, adjustable intensity, an optional 15–90-minute sunset fade, 15 sounds, FM radio, tap-control snooze, and daily or weekly alarms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those controls matter if you want to set the device itself and leave a phone out of the bedroom. The clock can serve as a gradual wake light, a conventional sound alarm, a radio alarm, or a wind-down light. Its built-in feature set is the main product rather than an expandable content service.

Sunrise and sunset behavior

How Restore 3 wakes you

Hatch describes Restore 3’s sunrise as a gradual brightening paired with a sound choice. In Hatch Support’s wording, “The Restore 3 Sunrise Alarm feature allows you to create a custom light and sound combination to gently wake you up.” You choose the combination in the app, and the sound comes after the light phase is complete.

This is useful when you want the light and audio to play distinct roles: light provides a gradual cue, while sound provides a final wake signal. The available documentation establishes that the light is configurable and gradual, but it does not state a single fixed fade range that can be compared numerically with Lumie’s 15–90-minute setting.

How Shine 300 handles sunrise and sunset

Shine 300 gives you an explicit duration range. Lumie lists 15–90 minutes for both sunrise and sunset, along with a choice of light intensity. A shorter setting creates a quicker transition; a longer setting spreads the change over more of your sleep or wake period.

The sunset mode can include optional audio, allowing the light to fade while a selected sound plays. Because the duration and intensity are clock features, you do not need to subscribe to unlock the basic fade controls described in the product listing.

Which fade approach suits your routine?

  • Choose Restore 3’s approach if you want the sunrise to be one part of a broader sequence that can include sleep audio, bedtime timing, and other light cues.
  • Choose Shine 300’s approach if a clearly specified fade duration and adjustable intensity are more important than a larger content library.
  • Do not treat a longer fade as proof of better sleep. The product descriptions establish settings and behavior, not a clinical advantage for one model.

Audio: included sounds, radio, and optional content

Restore 3’s included and premium audio

Hatch says Restore 3 includes more than 40 sleep sounds, basic routines, and sunrise alarms. These free features are enough to create a basic bedtime and wake-up routine without paying for a membership.

Hatch+ is optional. Hatch’s support explanation describes the subscription as an expansion of the content library, including additional original content. The Restore learning page lists Hatch+ at $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year; those are recurring prices and should be checked again because subscription pricing can change. A 30-day Hatch+ trial is included with Restore 3, so confirm when the trial ends and how cancellation works if you do not want an ongoing charge.

The practical distinction is between access to a larger catalog and access to the clock’s core functions. Hatch does not state that a subscription is required for the basic sunrise alarm, free sounds, or basic routines.

Shine 300’s built-in sounds and FM radio

Lumie lists 15 sounds and FM radio as part of Shine 300’s feature set. That gives you conventional alarm choices and the option to wake to a radio station rather than a stored sleep-content library.

FM radio can be a deciding feature if you already use a station as part of your morning routine. Reception depends on the clock’s location and local broadcast availability, so position the unit where it can receive the stations you want. The product listing identifies the radio and sounds as built-in features; it does not identify a separate content subscription.

Audio decision guide

  • Pick Restore 3 for a broader sleep-audio workflow and the option to expand content through Hatch+.
  • Pick Shine 300 for a fixed collection of 15 sounds and FM radio without building your routine around a content membership.
  • Check your actual habit. If you only need one gentle sound, a premium library may add little value. If variety helps you maintain a bedtime routine, the expanded catalog may matter more than radio.

Setup and everyday controls

Restore 3 setup path

  1. Place Restore 3 where you can see and reach it from bed, then connect it according to Hatch’s setup instructions.
  2. Open the Hatch app and create the bedtime or wake routine. Select the light behavior, sound, and timing you want.
  3. Decide whether the free content is sufficient before starting or continuing the Hatch+ trial.
  4. Run the routine once while you are awake so you can check brightness, sound level, and timing.
  5. When the schedule is working, leave the phone outside the bedroom or out of reach and use the clock’s physical controls for the bedside interaction Hatch supports.

This arrangement suits people who accept app-based customization but want the final routine to be phone-free. It also means the initial configuration is more involved than simply setting an alarm directly on a clock.

Shine 300 setup path

  1. Position the clock so the light is visible from your sleeping position and the controls are reachable.
  2. Set the sunrise duration anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes and choose the light intensity.
  3. Select one of the 15 built-in sounds or tune the FM radio, then set the alarm time.
  4. Configure the sunset fade if you want a scheduled wind-down, choosing a 15–90-minute duration and optional audio.
  5. Choose a daily or weekly alarm schedule and test the tap-control snooze before relying on it for a work or school morning.

Shine 300 is the more direct choice when you want the device to hold the schedule and settings without making an app the center of the routine.

Does Hatch Restore 3 need a subscription?

No. Hatch lists free Restore 3 features including more than 40 sleep sounds, basic routines, and sunrise alarms. Hatch+ is an optional upgrade for additional content, with a 30-day trial included and a listed price of $5.99 monthly or $59.99 annually on Hatch’s learning page.

Before accepting the trial, identify which premium sounds or programs you actually want. If the free catalog covers your routine, the hardware can be used without adding a recurring membership. If you later cancel Hatch+, check what remains available under the free tier rather than assuming every routine element is subscription-dependent.

Can Lumie Shine 300 play FM radio?

Yes. Lumie’s Shine 300 listing includes FM radio alongside 15 built-in sounds. The radio is therefore part of the clock’s stated feature set, not an app-based streaming function. You should still test reception in the clock’s intended location and confirm that the stations you use are available in your area.

Which clock is easier to keep phone-free?

Both products can support a phone-free bedroom, but they get there differently. Restore 3 uses the phone during customization and then is intended to run the configured routine with the phone put away. Its strength is repeatable automation after setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shine 300 emphasizes controls and schedules on the clock itself. Daily and weekly alarms, tap snooze, sounds, radio, and fade settings are listed as device features. That is a better match if you do not want an app involved in routine changes or if more than one person may need to adjust the clock.

There is a trade-off. App configuration can expose more routine combinations, while physical controls can be quicker for simple changes. Decide whether you change your schedule often. Frequent changes favor the interface you find easiest; a stable schedule makes the initial setup difference less important.

Cost: hardware price versus recurring content

The listed U.S. hardware prices are close: Restore 3 is listed at $169.99 on Hatch’s product page, while Lumie’s U.S. comparison page lists Shine 300 at $169. The small difference should not decide the purchase by itself.

The more meaningful cost question is whether you will continue paying for optional Hatch+ content. At the listed rate of $5.99 per month, a full year of monthly billing would cost more than the published $59.99 annual option; choose based on how long you expect to keep the service and verify the current terms before subscribing. Shine 300’s listed features are described as built into the clock, with no content subscription identified in the product listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also compare the policies that manufacturers’ product pages do not settle for you: the retailer’s warranty terms, return period, shipping cost, exact model variant, and current stock. A lower checkout price is less useful if the return window is short or the listing is for a different regional version.

Which sunrise alarm is better for your routine?

Choose Hatch Restore 3 when these statements sound like you

  • You want sleep sounds and bedtime programming to be as important as the morning alarm.
  • You are comfortable using an app for setup but want the routine to run with the phone put away.
  • You value a configurable light-and-sound sequence more than a radio tuner.
  • You may want a larger content catalog and are willing to evaluate an optional Hatch+ membership.
  • Your routine benefits from repeating the same multi-step sequence every night.

Choose Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 when these statements sound like you

  • You want an adjustable 15–90-minute sunrise and sunset fade with selectable intensity.
  • FM radio is part of how you wake up, or you prefer a fixed set of built-in sounds.
  • You want daily or weekly alarm scheduling and tap-control snooze on the clock.
  • You prefer clock-based controls and do not want routine content to depend on an app.
  • You want the listed functions without an identified content subscription.

When neither feature set is decisive

Use the routine you already follow as the tie-breaker. Write down your desired bedtime, wind-down length, wake time, sound source, and how often the schedule changes. If the list contains several content and sequencing steps, Restore 3 is the closer match. If it contains a defined fade length, radio, and simple recurring alarms, Shine 300 is the closer match.

Evidence, health claims, and what the product pages do not prove

Hatch reports that 10% of respondents said their sleep had improved, 12% said they enjoyed waking up more, and 11% said they felt better rested. Hatch says these figures came from its October 2023 biannual Sleep Wellness Impact survey of 1,000 Restore and Restore 2 customers.

Those are manufacturer-reported survey responses, not independent clinical findings. They describe the surveyed customers’ answers and cannot predict what a new Restore 3 owner will experience. The official product sources reviewed also do not identify an independent head-to-head trial showing that Restore 3 produces better sleep or waking outcomes than Shine 300.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the devices as routine tools rather than medical treatments. If persistent insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, or another sleep concern is affecting you, a sunrise alarm should not replace qualified medical advice.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm the exact model name: Restore 3 or Bodyclock Shine 300.
  • Check the current U.S. price and stock on the manufacturer or retailer page.
  • For Restore 3, decide whether free sounds and basic routines meet your needs before starting Hatch+.
  • For Shine 300, verify that FM reception works where you plan to place the clock.
  • Measure the bedside location and confirm that the display and light will be visible without shining directly into your eyes.
  • Test the alarm volume, brightness, snooze action, and schedule during the retailer’s return period.
  • Read the retailer’s warranty and return terms; these vary independently of the product feature lists.
