Yes—depending on the measurement. Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain summit above global mean sea level, but Mauna Kea is taller from its submerged geological base to its peak, and Ecuador’s Chimborazo reaches farther from Earth’s center. These are different measurements, so the mountains are not contradictory winners.
Three valid answers to “tallest mountain”

Everest is highest above sea level
When people say Everest is the world’s tallest mountain, they usually mean summit elevation above global mean sea level. Everest’s summit is 8,848.86 meters (29,031 feet 8 inches) above sea level in the current Guinness record figure. NOAA describes the same distinction more simply, reporting Everest at 8,848 meters and calling it the highest point above global mean sea level.
This baseline is useful because sea level provides a broadly comparable reference for mountains on different continents. It does not, however, measure how far a mountain rises from the crust or ocean floor beneath it.

Most of Mauna Kea is hidden below the Pacific
Mauna Kea, on Hawaii, rises 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) above sea level. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the volcano extends about 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) below sea level to the deep ocean floor. Adding the submerged and emergent sections gives a total of nearly 33,500 feet (10,211 meters) from physical base to summit.

That makes Mauna Kea taller than Everest under a true base-to-peak comparison. Its ranking changes only because most of its mountain is underwater; the familiar sea-level measurement counts the summit’s elevation but not the volcano’s hidden foundation.
Why the comparisons are not contradictory
Everest and Mauna Kea answer different questions. Everest has the higher summit relative to sea level, while Mauna Kea spans a greater vertical distance from its geological base. A mountain can therefore be “highest” without being “tallest” in every possible sense.

Chimborazo is farthest from Earth’s center
The equatorial bulge changes the geometry
Earth is not a perfect sphere. Its rotation makes the planet slightly wider around the equator than near the poles. Chimborazo is close to the equator, so its summit starts farther from Earth’s center than a summit at a higher latitude.

NOAA explains that Chimborazo’s summit is more than 2,072 meters farther from Earth’s center than Everest’s, even though Chimborazo’s elevation above sea level is much lower. Guinness places Chimborazo’s summit approximately 6,384 kilometers from Earth’s center. Under this radial measurement, Chimborazo—not Everest—is the point on Earth’s surface that reaches farthest into space.

What “taller than Everest” should mean in practice
- Use Everest when discussing the highest summit above global mean sea level.
- Use Mauna Kea when comparing a mountain’s complete physical rise from seafloor to summit.
- Use Chimborazo when asking which summit is farthest from Earth’s center.
Always state the baseline before giving the winner. Without it, “tallest” can misleadingly combine elevation, total mountain relief and planetary geometry into one claim.

The wording “has there ever been” can refer to Earth’s geological past rather than today’s mountains. The authoritative measurements summarized here establish the present-day comparisons, but they do not demonstrate that a prehistoric mountain exceeded Everest under one consistent baseline. Ancient mountain ranges have been eroded, uplifted and reconfigured, and a valid historical ranking would require comparable geological reconstructions of their original bases, summits and reference surfaces. That past-tense question therefore remains open on the available evidence.
