No—not in any established, measurable sense. Biology-facing research has been part of the Chemistry Nobel since at least 1907, and recent awards for genome editing, bioorthogonal chemistry, and proteins have made that overlap especially visible. But the prize still recognizes work outside biology, and the Nobel record does not provide a consistent count showing that biology has taken over.
Why does the Chemistry Nobel look so biological lately?
Several recent awards have focused on research closely connected to living systems. In 2020, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna received the prize for developing a method for genome editing. In 2022, Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless were recognized for click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. In 2024, David Baker received half the prize for computational protein design, while Demis Hassabis and John Jumper shared the other half for protein structure prediction. The official award list records these citations.
Those subjects are biological in their applications and context, but that does not make the awarded work simply biology. The 2024 Nobel explanation focuses on proteins as chemical tools, and on their structures, design, and prediction. As Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, put it: “The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools.”
Biology has been part of the Chemistry Nobel for more than a century
The overlap did not begin with modern molecular biology. Eduard Buchner received the 1907 Chemistry Prize for biochemical research, including the discovery of cell-free fermentation. The Nobel’s historical account describes chemistry as bordering biology and notes that living organisms are among the most complex chemical systems.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That account also places protein sequencing and structures, recombinant DNA, RNA catalysis, and DNA technologies within the history of the Chemistry Nobel. The border between disciplines has long been porous: chemical explanations and methods are central to many questions about life.
Recent awards still cover chemistry beyond biology
The recent record is not limited to life sciences. The 2023 Chemistry Prize recognized the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. In 2025, Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi received the prize for developing metal–organic frameworks. These awards illustrate the range of subjects recognized in recent years; they do not, by themselves, establish how that range has changed over the full history of the prize.

Can we prove that biology’s share has increased?
Not from the official counts alone. Nobel Prize Outreach reports 117 Chemistry Prizes awarded between 1901 and 2025, with 200 laureates representing 198 different people; Frederick Sanger and Barry Sharpless each won twice. Those figures count prizes and laureates, not biology-related awards.

What the question gets right
The question captures a real shift in visibility: recent Chemistry Nobel citations include prominent work on genome editing and proteins, topics many readers associate with biology. But it mistakes a noticeable cluster of biology-facing awards for proof that the prize has changed its identity. The better description is that the Chemistry Nobel has long recognized work at chemistry’s boundary with biology, while continuing to honor research in other areas.
