For The Week’s hard Sudoku for 19–25 October 2026, use its live daily puzzle page: Hard sudoku: daily puzzle from The Week. The page updates daily, but the exact grids and solutions for those dates are not established here, so this guide does not reproduce a puzzle or claim a solution. It explains the rules, a reliable way to work through a hard grid, and where to find additional practice.

What makes a Sudoku hard?

The rules stay the same at every difficulty. Apple Support describes Sudoku as placing the numbers 1 to 9 into a grid of nine 3×3 blocks so that each digit appears once in every block, row, and column. A puzzle’s difficulty comes from how much deduction is needed to determine placements—not from a different set of rules. Apple characterizes challenging puzzles as requiring more complex strategies to narrow the possibilities for empty squares; difficulty labels can vary by publisher.

As The Week puts it, “Fill the grid with numbers one to nine so that each row, column and square contains every digit exactly once.” Read Apple’s explanation in Solve sudoku puzzles in News on iPhone.

How to solve a hard Sudoku without guessing

  1. Scan for missing digits. For each row, column, and 3×3 block, note which numbers from 1 to 9 are absent. Check whether any empty cell can take only one of them without repeating a digit in its row, column, or block.
  2. Record candidates. When a cell cannot yet be solved, write down the digits that remain possible after checking its row, column, and block. Remove a candidate only when a confirmed placement or another valid deduction rules it out.
  3. Look for a digit with few possible locations. Within a row, column, or block, check where each missing digit could go. If only one cell in that unit can contain a particular digit, place it there.
  4. Update the grid after every placement. A confirmed digit changes the possibilities in three places: its row, its column, and its block. Recheck those units, then continue scanning the rest of the grid.
  5. If progress stops, change the unit you inspect. Move from rows to columns or blocks, and revisit candidate notes as the grid changes. Avoid entering a number just because it seems likely; a placement should follow from the rules and available candidates.
