A hard disk sector is a unit the drive uses to organize and address storage. The size a computer sees can differ from the larger unit the drive uses internally: a disk may expose 512-byte logical sectors while operating on 4 KB physical sectors, or expose 4 KB for both. That distinction explains why a drive can be described as both “512 bytes” and “4096 bytes.”

What a hard disk sector is

A sector is a device-level unit of storage addressable by the computer. Modern interfaces commonly refer to these addressable units as logical sectors or logical blocks. The word “sector” can therefore mean either the unit visible to the host or the unit the drive uses internally; those sizes are not always the same.

Microsoft defines the logical sector as the unit used for logical block addressing. The physical sector is the unit in which the device completes read and write operations, and it is also relevant to atomic writes in Microsoft’s compatibility discussion. Microsoft Learn explains the distinction and its compatibility implications.

Logical and physical sector sizes compared

Format Logical sector size (host-visible) Physical sector size (drive’s working unit) What the format means
512n 512 bytes 512 bytes Logical and physical sectors are both 512 bytes.
512e 512 bytes 4 KB (4096 bytes) The drive presents 512-byte sectors for compatibility while using 4 KB physical sectors.
4Kn 4 KB (4096 bytes) 4 KB (4096 bytes) The drive presents and uses 4 KB sectors natively.

These terms describe sector formats, not a guarantee about a particular drive. Microsoft’s Advanced Format compatibility guidance covers 512e and 4Kn, and SanDisk also describes the 512n, 512e and 4Kn terminology in its support material: Learn About Internal SSD Advanced Format 4k Sector Size Support. SanDisk’s page concerns SSD support; it should not be taken as proof of the format of every hard disk model.

How 512-byte and 4 KB sectors work together

A 4 KB physical sector contains eight 512-byte logical sectors. On a 512e drive, the computer addresses data in the smaller logical units, but the device’s physical read/write unit is larger. The logical sector is like the addressable slice the host sees; the physical sector is the drive’s larger working unit.

This difference matters when software writes data that is misaligned with physical-sector boundaries or handles sector sizes incorrectly. The device may need extra work to accommodate a write that does not line up with its physical unit, although the exact behavior depends on the drive and the write pattern. Microsoft identifies alignment and software that fails to account for physical sector size as compatibility concerns. Its Hyper-V storage I/O guidance discusses writes on 512e disks in virtualization and storage contexts.

What sector size means for compatibility

Older software may assume that a sector is 512 bytes. A 512e drive preserves that host-visible size, while a 4Kn drive exposes 4 KB logical sectors. Whether a specific system can use a format depends on the operating-system version and updates, as well as the controller and applications involved. Historical compatibility tables should not be treated as universal guidance for current systems.

  • Check both sizes: A specification that lists only “sector size” may not make clear whether it means logical or physical size.
  • Check the exact system and software: Compatibility can depend on the OS version, controller and applications, not just the drive.
  • Account for alignment: Partitions and I/O requests aligned to physical-sector boundaries can avoid issues associated with misaligned operations.
  • Verify the model documentation: Capacity or interface alone does not establish whether a drive is 512n, 512e or 4Kn.

Is a sector the same as a block or a file-system cluster?

“Logical block” is commonly used for the host-visible addressable unit, so it can refer to the same concept as a logical sector in this context. A file-system cluster is different: it is an allocation unit used by the file system, not the drive’s device-level addressing unit. The terms describe different layers of storage.
