Handoff continues a supported activity on another nearby Apple device; Universal Clipboard lets you copy content on one Apple device and paste it on another. They share the same Continuity foundation and much of the same setup, but they solve different problems. Use Handoff when you want to resume work, such as a webpage, email, or document. Use Universal Clipboard when you want to move copied text, images, photos, videos, or files between devices.
Handoff and Universal Clipboard at a glance
The easiest way to distinguish the features is to ask what you are trying to move:
- An active task: Handoff presents a way to continue supported work on another device.
- Copied data: Universal Clipboard transfers whatever you copied so you can paste it normally elsewhere.

What Handoff does
Handoff is designed for a task that is already under way. You begin an activity in a supported app on one Apple device, then open the corresponding continuation option on another nearby device signed in to the same Apple Account. The second device opens the app and presents the task so you can carry on rather than start over.
Examples of Handoff tasks
Apple lists Handoff support for Safari, Mail, FaceTime, Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Reminders. Some third-party apps support it as well. The exact state that is restored depends on the app: a browser may reopen the page you were viewing, while a document app may reopen the current file and position.

Handoff is therefore broader than transferring a piece of data. It is about the context of the activity—the app, the item being worked on, and the point at which you stopped.
How you invoke Handoff
After Handoff is enabled on both devices, the receiving device displays a continuation affordance when a supported activity is available. On a Mac, the Handoff item appears in the Dock. On an iPhone, it appears in the app switcher. Select that item to open the activity on the receiving device. Labels and the exact location can vary with the operating-system version.
What Universal Clipboard does
Universal Clipboard treats the clipboard as a bridge between your nearby Apple devices. Copy content on one device, move to the other device, and use the destination app’s ordinary Paste command. Apple’s guidance covers text, images, photos, videos, files, and other content where the app supports that type of copy and paste.
It does not open the source app or recreate a complete work session. If you copy a paragraph from an iPhone, for example, Universal Clipboard makes that paragraph available to paste on a Mac. If you copy a file or image, the destination app must know how to accept it.
Universal Clipboard is temporary
Apple says copied content remains available for a brief period, or until something else is copied on either device. Apple’s cited guidance does not specify an exact number of seconds or minutes. Treat Universal Clipboard as a short-lived transfer mechanism, not as permanent storage or a synchronized clipboard history.
How the two features are related
Universal Clipboard is one of Apple’s Continuity features and uses Handoff technology. That is why both features require many of the same conditions: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on, Handoff must be enabled, the devices must use the same Apple Account, and they must be close enough to communicate.

The relationship does not make the features interchangeable. Handoff can continue a supported app activity without you explicitly copying anything. Universal Clipboard does not offer a general “resume this task” command; it only makes copied content available to paste.

Before troubleshooting either feature, check the basic Continuity conditions on every participating device:
- Same Apple Account: Sign in to the same account on both devices. Current Apple terminology is “Apple Account”; older instructions may say “Apple ID.”
- Wi-Fi enabled: Wi-Fi needs to be turned on, even when the devices are not actively using the same internet activity.
- Bluetooth enabled: Bluetooth provides the nearby-device connection used by Continuity.
- Handoff enabled: Universal Clipboard depends on Handoff, so turning Handoff off also prevents Universal Clipboard from working.
- Proximity: Keep the devices nearby. Apple specifies within 30 feet (10 meters) when diagnosing Universal Clipboard failures.
- Compatible software and hardware: Apple requires feature-specific minimum requirements. The exact supported model and operating-system matrix can change, so verify the current requirements for your devices before relying on a particular combination.
A virtual private network can also matter. Apple notes that a VPN configuration that blocks local networking may interfere with some Continuity features.
Turn on Handoff
Enable Handoff on each device that will send or receive a task. Menu names can differ by operating-system release, but Apple’s current guides use the following paths.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Open AirPlay & Continuity. Some releases may use a slightly different Continuity label.
- Turn on Handoff.
Also confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and that the device is signed in to the same Apple Account as the Mac or other Apple device.
Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Choose General.
- Open AirDrop & Continuity or AirDrop & Handoff, depending on the macOS version.
- Turn on the Handoff option.
On older macOS releases, the path is System Preferences > General. If you cannot find the setting, search System Settings or System Preferences for “Handoff.”

Use Handoff step by step
- On the source device, open a Handoff-capable app such as Safari, Mail, Maps, Calendar, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, or Reminders.
- Start or open the activity you want to continue. For example, open a webpage, an email draft, or a document.
- Leave the source device nearby with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled.
- On the receiving Mac, select the Handoff item in the Dock. On an iPhone, open the app switcher and select the Handoff continuation item.
- Continue working in the app that opens. If no continuation item appears, check app support and the shared requirements before trying again.
Handoff is app-specific. A task will not appear merely because both devices are nearby; the app and its current activity must implement Handoff.
Use Universal Clipboard step by step
- Confirm that both devices have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled, use the same Apple Account, meet Apple’s compatibility requirements, and are nearby.
- On the source device, select the text, image, photo, video, file, or other content you need and choose Copy.
- Move to the destination device while the copied content is still available. Do not copy different content on either device if you want to preserve the first item.
- Place the insertion point or select the destination location in an app that supports the content type.
- Choose Paste using the app’s normal command, keyboard shortcut, or touch menu.
No separate Universal Clipboard window or manual transfer command is required. The feature is intended to feel like ordinary copy and paste across devices.
Which feature should you use?
Choose Handoff when the work itself is the object
- You want to continue reading the same webpage on a larger screen.
- You started composing or reading an email and want to resume it elsewhere.
- You need to reopen a supported document or planning task at its current point.
- You want the receiving device to open the relevant app and activity for you.
Choose Universal Clipboard when the content is the object
- You need to paste a short passage from an iPhone into a Mac document.
- You want to move an image, photo, video, or file into another app.
- You do not need the source app, page, or document state to reopen.
- The destination app has a normal Paste command for the copied content.
Use both for a two-part workflow
The features can complement each other. Handoff can open the relevant app and activity on another device, while Universal Clipboard can carry a separately copied item into that activity. They remain separate operations: one resumes a supported task and the other transfers clipboard content.
App support and content limits
Handoff requires support in the app on the source and receiving devices. Apple’s own apps provide the clearest examples, but third-party support varies by app and version. If a particular app never offers a Handoff continuation item, that does not necessarily mean Continuity is broken.
Universal Clipboard follows normal copy-and-paste rules. The source app must make the item available to copy, and the destination app must accept that type of content. A destination that accepts plain text may not accept a file, rich formatting, or a video in the same way. The result can therefore differ from one app pair to another even when the devices and account settings are correct.
Privacy and security considerations
Apple Platform Security says Universal Clipboard leverages Handoff to transfer clipboard content and protects it like other Handoff data. That describes the transport and protection model; it does not turn Universal Clipboard into a permanent clipboard vault.

Apple also states that an app can access clipboard data whether or not you have pasted it into that app. With Universal Clipboard, that access extends to apps on the user’s other devices signed in to the account. This is a capability statement, not a claim that every app uploads or stores everything in the clipboard. If the copied material is sensitive, avoid leaving it in Universal Clipboard longer than needed and copy unrelated content afterward to replace it.

Troubleshoot Handoff and Universal Clipboard
Work through the checks in this order so that a missing setting is not mistaken for an app limitation.
1. Confirm the account on both devices
Open the account settings on each device and verify that both are signed in to the same Apple Account. A family member’s device or a second account will not satisfy this requirement.
2. Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff
Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on every participating device. Then verify Handoff in the Continuity settings described above. Because Universal Clipboard uses Handoff, checking only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is not enough.
3. Bring the devices closer
Place the devices next to each other and retry. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance specifies a maximum distance of 30 feet (10 meters) for Universal Clipboard. Obstacles, radio interference, or simply being at opposite ends of a building can make a connection unreliable even when the devices appear nearby on a network.

For Handoff, try one of Apple’s listed supported apps. For Universal Clipboard, test a short piece of plain text first, then try the original content type. This separates a general Continuity problem from an app that does not support the task or data format.

5. Check software updates
Install available operating-system updates on both devices. Apple’s guidance includes updating software as a troubleshooting step, and compatibility requirements can depend on the system version.
6. Review VPN and local-network settings
If a VPN is active, inspect whether its configuration blocks local networking. Temporarily testing without that restriction can identify a network-policy problem, subject to your organization’s security rules.
7. Restart both devices
Apple recommends restarting the devices if Universal Clipboard still fails after the preceding checks. After the restart, recheck the account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff, and proximity before copying again.

8. Interpret the symptom
- No Handoff item appears: Check that the app supports Handoff and that a supported activity is open, then recheck shared requirements.
- Universal Clipboard pastes nothing: Copy again, paste promptly, and ensure that no other device has replaced the clipboard.
- Text works but a file or image does not: The destination app may not support that content type through its normal paste behavior.
- Both features stopped at once: Start with the shared account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff, proximity, VPN, update, and restart checks.
Compatibility: what can and cannot be assumed
Apple’s support materials state that Handoff and Universal Clipboard require compatible devices and operating systems, but the available guidance does not provide a complete model-by-model and version-by-version matrix. Do not infer support solely from a device having Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Check Apple’s current compatibility documentation for the exact iPhone, iPad, Mac, and operating-system combination you plan to use.
Settings labels also change. “AirPlay & Continuity” and “AirDrop & Continuity” or “AirDrop & Handoff” are examples of current wording differences, while older macOS releases use System Preferences instead of System Settings. The underlying requirement—Handoff enabled on both devices—remains the important check.
Bottom line: task continuation versus clipboard transfer
Handoff is the right mental model for “Continue what I was doing.” Universal Clipboard is the right model for “Move what I just copied.” Universal Clipboard relies on Handoff and shares its account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, proximity, and compatibility requirements, but it does not replace Handoff’s app-level task continuation. Enable both if you regularly move between Apple devices, then choose the feature based on whether you need the activity itself or only a copied piece of content.
