Choose a handheld gaming PC if you want to play away from a desk or television; choose Valve’s Steam Machine if you mainly want a compact PC for a TV or desk setup. They are different form factors, so the better option depends more on where and how you play than on a simple console-versus-console ranking.
How the two options differ
| Question | Handheld gaming PC | Steam Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it designed to play? | In your hands, with a built-in screen and controls; portable play is the defining advantage. | Stationary, connected to a television or desk display. Valve describes it as a compact gaming PC. |
| What is a relevant example? | Steam Deck OLED, or Lenovo Legion Go S powered by SteamOS. | Valve Steam Machine. |
| What does setup involve? | Pick it up and play, or connect it to a larger display and peripherals when convenient. | Connect it to a display and use a controller or desktop peripherals. |
| What matters most in choosing? | Portability, handheld controls, and whether your games work well on SteamOS. | Living-room or desk use, the listed hardware, and compatibility with your games. |
When a handheld gaming PC is the better choice
A handheld suits you if you value playing in different rooms, while traveling, or wherever a television and desk are not available. Its integrated screen and controls make it a self-contained gaming device; it can also serve as a PC-style system rather than being limited to a console interface.
Steam Deck OLED is one example, but the category is not limited to Valve hardware. Lenovo announced a Legion Go S powered by SteamOS on January 7, 2025. That announcement establishes it as another SteamOS handheld option, not its current price or availability. Lenovo’s announcement

Steam Machine is the more natural fit if your gaming mostly happens at home on a large display or at a desk. It is a stationary compact PC, not a handheld that you can take around. Valve lists DisplayPort and HDMI outputs for connecting it to a display.

Valve’s published specifications include a custom AMD Zen 4 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, up to 4.8 GHz; a custom AMD RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units and a sustained clock up to 2.45 GHz; and 16 GB of DDR5 system memory plus 8 GB of GDDR6 video memory. Storage configurations listed are 512 GB and 2 TB NVMe, and both include a microSD slot. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of game performance. What Valve’s performance claim does—and doesn’t—tell you
Valve says Steam Machine has “more than six times the power of Steam Deck.” That is the manufacturer’s own comparison; it is not an independent benchmark showing how a particular game performs at a particular resolution or graphics setting. Treat it as a broad product claim, not a guarantee of frame rates or image quality in the games you play.

For a performance decision, look for independent testing of the exact model and games you care about, at settings and resolution similar to your intended setup. The available specifications alone do not establish a game-by-game winner between a stationary Steam Machine and handheld devices.

Check game compatibility before choosing
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve says its Proton compatibility layer allows the “vast majority” of the Steam catalog to run. “Vast majority” does not mean every title works, or that all supported games work equally well. Valve’s Verified ratings are intended to show how well individual games work on SteamOS devices. Check the specific games you want before buying, especially if a few titles are essential to your library. Valve’s SteamOS overview
