“Halt and catch fire” has two meanings: a computing expression associated with a computer supposedly overheating, and Halt and Catch Fire, AMC’s drama about people building computers in the early 1980s. The overheating story is described by AMC as popular legend. Intel’s documented HLT instruction halts instruction execution; its manual does not say it makes a processor catch fire.

What does “halt and catch fire” mean?

In computing, “halt and catch fire” is a dramatic phrase for a supposed instruction that makes a computer stop working—often told as a story about wires overheating. AMC’s 2014 explainer calls that overheating account “popular legend,” not verified processor history. The phrase is also the title of AMC’s television drama, which uses the idea as a name rather than a literal description of what Intel’s HLT instruction does. AMC’s title explainer

Does Intel’s HLT instruction make a computer catch fire?

No. Intel’s instruction manual defines HLT as stopping instruction execution and placing the processor in a HALT state. That is a defined processor state, not an instruction to overheat or physically destroy hardware. Intel 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer’s Manual

How execution resumes

Intel says execution can resume after specified events, including an enabled interrupt (including NMI or SMI), a debug exception, BINIT#, INIT#, or RESET#. The exact behavior is therefore not “the computer catches fire”; the processor halts until a documented event allows execution to continue.

Privilege and Hyper-Threading details

  • In protected mode and virtual-8086 mode, HLT is privileged and requires privilege level 0.
  • On a processor supporting Hyper-Threading, executing HLT halts only the logical processor that executed it.

Is AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire based on a real instruction?

AMC’s 2014 title explainer connects the name to a computer instruction and recounts the popular legend of overheating wires. That is AMC’s explanation of the title, not Intel’s technical description of HLT. Intel documents a halt state and the events that can resume execution; its manual does not describe the wire-overheating story.

What is the AMC show about?

AMC announced Halt and Catch Fire as a drama set during the rise of the personal-computer era in the early 1980s. The network described an unlikely trio—a visionary, an engineer, and a prodigy—risking personal and professional stakes in a race to build a computer. The series was created by Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers and premiered June 1, 2014. AMC named Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, Kerry Bishé, and Toby Huss among its stars.
