The novel is set during the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto leads fellow survivors from the Pillar of Autumn’s brig toward its crash site, hoping to reunite with UNSC forces. Along the way, they face Covenant forces and a threat unleashed from deep beneath Halo, according to the publisher’s synopsis.

The setting is Installation 04, also referred to as Alpha Halo in Halo Waypoint’s release coverage. Because the story takes place during the game’s events, calling it a “prequel” can be misleading: official descriptions present it as a companion story set alongside Halo: Combat Evolved, not as a story established to precede the game.
