Halo: Parasite’s Wake is Tim Lebbon’s horror novel set during Halo: Combat Evolved on Alpha Halo, also called Installation 04. Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto leads survivors from the Pillar of Autumn brig toward the ship’s crash site while Covenant forces fight over the ring’s secrets and a more dangerous threat emerges from Halo’s underworld.
What is Halo: Parasite’s Wake?
Halo: Parasite’s Wake is an original Halo-universe novel by horror writer Tim Lebbon. Its setting is not a new era after the game and it is not a retelling of the game’s campaign from Master Chief’s viewpoint. Instead, it runs alongside the events of Halo: Combat Evolved, showing another group of people trying to survive the same crisis on Alpha Halo.
The novel’s central group consists of Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto and survivors from the brig aboard the UNSC ship Pillar of Autumn. Their immediate objective is to reach the Autumn’s crash site and regroup with other UNSC personnel. The journey takes them through a battlefield where Covenant troops are pursuing the installation’s weapons and secrets. According to the official synopsis, a threat released from deep within Halo turns that military conflict into a survival struggle for humans and Covenant alike.

Where and when does the story take place?
Alpha Halo, or Installation 04
Alpha Halo and Installation 04 are two names for the same ringworld. The novel uses the installation as its primary setting, rather than moving between the many worlds and stations that appear elsewhere in Halo. The ring is strategically important to both sides, and the official synopsis frames the Covenant fighting to obtain its weapons and secrets.
For the human survivors, the installation is also a hostile landscape after the Pillar of Autumn arrives and crashes. UNSC forces are scattered, communications and rendezvous plans are uncertain, and Mobuto’s party must cross dangerous territory to reach the wreck. The book’s horror premise adds a threat beneath that already unstable military situation.
Concurrent with Halo: Combat Evolved
The publisher places the story in 2552, as Reach falls and the Pillar of Autumn reaches the ring. Halo Waypoint confirms that the action unfolds during Halo: Combat Evolved. Consequently, the novel should be read as concurrent fiction, not a sequel that begins after the game’s ending.

What is the story about?
Mobuto’s mission
Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto is the group’s principal military leader. He takes responsibility for survivors from the Pillar of Autumn brig and attempts to get them to the crash site, where they hope to reconnect with UNSC forces. Their route is a practical military objective, but the group is not a conventional platoon returning from a successful deployment.
The brig survivors
The survivors include people being held on charges such as desertion, disorderly conduct and murder. Those details matter because Mobuto must move a group whose members may distrust one another and whose backgrounds create problems beyond the immediate Covenant attack. The official synopsis does not identify every survivor or explain the evidence behind the charges, so the book should not be marketed as a story about a fully defined squad with known individual histories.
A two-layered threat
At the surface level, the survivors are caught in the Covenant-UNSC conflict surrounding Installation 04. The synopsis then introduces a second danger: something from Halo’s underworld is unleashed. That development changes the nature of the story from an escape across a contested installation to a horror-driven fight for survival. The wording establishes the threat’s origin and its effect on both factions, but it does not disclose its precise form or provide additional plot twists.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is it set before or after Halo: Combat Evolved? | Neither in the usual sequel sense. It takes place during the game’s events. |
| What location anchors the novel? | Alpha Halo, also known as Installation 04. |
| Who leads the central group? | Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto. |
| What is the group trying to do? | Reach the Pillar of Autumn crash site and regroup with UNSC forces. |
| Does it retell the game’s campaign? | No official description presents it as a retelling; it follows Mobuto and the brig survivors in a concurrent storyline. |
This placement lets the novel broaden the first game’s setting without requiring a new historical period in the wider Halo timeline. Readers encounter the same installation and broad crisis through people who are not the campaign’s primary player character. Because no detailed overlap map has been published, claims that a particular scene occurs between named missions should be treated as unconfirmed.
Who is Marvin Mobuto, and do you need to know him?
Mobuto previously appeared in the 2003 novelization Halo: The Flood. Halo Waypoint identifies that earlier appearance when introducing Parasite’s Wake. The connection gives returning readers an extra point of recognition, but the announcement does not say that The Flood is required reading.
The new novel’s premise supplies the essential context: Mobuto is a staff sergeant leading brig survivors across Installation 04 toward the Autumn’s wreck. A reader who has not encountered his earlier appearance can therefore approach the book as a self-contained side story within the established game setting. Reading The Flood first may provide additional familiarity with the character, but no official source establishes a prerequisite reading order.
Is this primarily a military novel or a horror novel?
It combines both modes, with horror as the defining distinction. The military framework comes from the crash, the scattered UNSC personnel, the Covenant operation and Mobuto’s attempt to move a difficult group to safety. The horror framework begins when the threat from Halo’s underworld is unleashed and the conflict becomes dangerous to both sides.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That combination also explains why the book can appeal to different Halo readers. Someone interested in the first game’s battlefield receives another account of the Alpha Halo crisis, while a reader looking for a darker interpretation of the setting gets a story built around isolation, an unstable group and an enemy that is not limited to the two familiar factions. The official material does not establish a specific age rating, gore level or style of horror, so those qualities should not be inferred beyond the publisher’s description of the novel as horror.
Publication date and available editions
Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books listing gives the trade paperback a publication date of October 20, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, that date is still in the future, although Halo Waypoint says the book is complete, off press and that physical copies exist. Retailer inventory and prices can change, so the bibliographic information is more stable than any particular offer.
| Format | Identifier | Published details |
|---|---|---|
| Trade paperback | ISBN 9781668226834 | 400 pages; listed publication date October 20, 2026 |
| Ebook | ISBN 9781668226841 | Digital edition; page count and release pricing are not stated in the cited listing |
| Unabridged audio download | ISBN 9781668167748 | 11-hour runtime; readers are Michael Crouch, Lisa Flanagan, Kevin R. Free, Joshua Riley and Tim Dadabo |
The 400-page figure applies to the listed Gallery Books trade paperback, while the 11-hour figure applies to the unabridged audio download. They are not interchangeable measures of story length, and the available listings do not support conclusions about narration style, sound quality or which format is best for a particular reader.

No official announcement says that prior play is mandatory. The premise identifies the relevant setting, the principal character, the group’s objective and the opposing forces. Readers who know the game will recognize Installation 04 and the surrounding crisis immediately, but the novel is presented as an original story rather than as a companion guide that assumes the reader has completed every mission.

Playing or replaying the game first can still be useful if you want the broadest context for the ring, the Autumn’s crash and the Covenant’s interest in the installation. The official material does not promise that the novel will explain every piece of Halo terminology or reproduce the game’s sequence of missions, so readers seeking a completely independent science-fiction novel should expect an established-universe story with prior lore in the background.
What the official information does—and does not—confirm
- Confirmed: Tim Lebbon is the author, the genre is described as horror, and the story is set during Halo: Combat Evolved on Alpha Halo/Installation 04.
- Confirmed: Mobuto leads survivors from the Pillar of Autumn brig toward the crash site.
- Confirmed: Covenant forces are involved in a struggle over the installation’s weapons and secrets, while a threat from the underworld endangers both sides.
- Confirmed: Mobuto previously appeared in the 2003 novelization Halo: The Flood.
- Not established in the available descriptions: a complete cast list, a mission-by-mission chronology, the exact nature of the underworld threat, a direct Tim Lebbon quotation about this novel, sales figures or reader-performance statistics.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a common mistake with tie-in fiction: treating a short publisher synopsis as if it were a complete plot outline. The known facts are enough to place the book confidently in Halo’s timeline, but not enough to describe undisclosed twists or assign details that the official pages do not provide.
Who is the book for?
- Halo: Combat Evolved fans who want another human perspective on the Alpha Halo crisis.
- Readers of darker military science fiction who like a survival story layered onto a battlefield narrative.
- Tim Lebbon readers interested in how his horror approach works inside an established game universe.
- Readers curious about Mobuto after his brief appearance in Halo: The Flood.
It may be a less suitable starting point for someone looking for a complete introduction to all Halo eras, factions and characters, because the official premise focuses narrowly on one installation, one crisis and one survivor group.

Bottom line
Halo: Parasite’s Wake is a concurrent Alpha Halo story, not a post-game sequel. Its distinctive angle is the collision of Mobuto’s uneasy brig survivors, the Covenant battle for Installation 04 and a newly unleashed threat from the ring’s depths. The paperback is listed for October 20, 2026, with ebook and unabridged audio editions also announced.
