Halo: Combat Evolved is playable on original Nintendo 64 hardware through Halo-64, an unofficial fan project focused on multiplayer rather than the campaign. It supports local split-screen for up to four people, bots, and a Firefight-style wave mode, but running it requires an N64 Expansion Pak and a technically demanding conversion process using files from your own original Xbox copy.
What Halo-64 actually is
Halo-64 is not a Microsoft or Nintendo release. It is a fan-made port of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer to the Nintendo 64. The project adapts game systems from the halo-ce-universal decompilation and builds new Nintendo 64-specific rendering, menus, HUD drawing and audio systems with libdragon and tiny3d.

The port converts multiplayer maps from Xbox game files and compiles them for the N64’s VR4300 processor. The available reporting describes a playable project, but neither of the main reports independently tested the build. Installation and performance claims should therefore be understood as project or report-based information, not as a hands-on review.
Does it include the campaign?
No. Halo-64 is multiplayer-focused and does not include the single-player campaign. Its scope is competitive multiplayer, bots and Firefight, so it is not a complete Nintendo 64 version of the original game.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo 64 Console (Black): Retro gaming console in a sleek black finish.
- Two Controllers (Red & Blue): Includes two vibrant controllers for multiplayer gaming.
- 256KB Memory Card: Save your game progress easily with ample storage.
- HDMI Adapter: Modern connectivity for easy setup with today’s TVs

Multiplayer features
Four-player split-screen
One to four people can play locally on the same Nintendo 64 through split-screen multiplayer. The project also supports bots, with up to eight AI players and four difficulty levels reported for the build.
Maps and game types
All 13 original Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer maps are supported. Reported game types include:
- Slayer
- Team Slayer
- Capture the Flag
- King of the Hill
The combination of four local players, bots and the original map set gives the port a broader multiplayer scope than a small technical demo.
Firefight
Firefight sends successive enemy waves against one to four players. It is separate from the campaign: the mode provides cooperative wave combat without recreating Halo’s story missions.
Rank #3

- Everything You Need to Play: Complete with a power and all essentiala, this is ready for instant setup — ideal for nostalgic fans and curious newcomers alike.
What hardware do you need?
Original-hardware play requires a Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak with 8MB of memory. The accessory is a requirement, not an optional enhancement. You also need an N64 console, a compatible game controller for each local player, the project build and the files needed to create it from your own original Xbox copy.
The port reportedly supports four control schemes, Rumble Pak functionality, and EEPROM saves for settings. Its HUD preserves Halo-style shields, health, ammunition and motion-sensor elements, while weapon and vehicle sound systems have been implemented for the N64 target.
Rank #4
- 64-Bit Graphics
- Cartridge based game system (no scratched games!)
- Excellent game library available (over 300)
- Inexpensive compared to newer gaming systems
How the build is created
This is not a matter of downloading an ordinary retail cartridge image and starting a game. The reported workflow is command-line-oriented and converts assets from a user’s legally owned original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved.

- Obtain source files legally: Use files extracted from your own original Xbox copy, as required by the project’s conversion workflow.
- Set up the build tools: Install the compilers, conversion utilities and project dependencies specified by the Halo-64 project.
- Convert the maps and assets: The Xbox multiplayer data is transformed into formats suitable for the N64 engine and its VR4300 processor.
- Compile and transfer the build: Build the N64 software and use the project’s supported development or flash-cartridge method to run it on hardware.
Exact commands, supported tool versions and distribution methods can change as the fan project evolves. Follow the project’s current documentation rather than assuming that instructions for an earlier build still apply.

Why the project is technically notable
Porting Halo’s multiplayer systems to a 1996 console involves more than shrinking textures. The project reuses systems for objects, physics, collision, weapons, game types, HUD elements, first-person weapons and pathfinding from the decompilation effort. It then supplies a new renderer, menu and HUD drawing code, and sound systems designed around Nintendo 64 development libraries.
Maps must be converted from Xbox data and compiled for the N64’s VR4300 CPU, while the game retains recognizable Halo feedback such as energy shields, health, ammunition and the motion sensor. Vehicle and weapon audio, controller rumble and EEPROM-based settings further indicate that the target is a functioning multiplayer game rather than a simple visual proof of concept.
Important limitations before you try it
- It is unofficial: Microsoft and Nintendo have not released this port.
- There is no campaign: Buy or play the original versions if you want Halo’s story missions.
- The Expansion Pak is mandatory: Standard 4MB N64 memory is insufficient for the reported original-hardware build.
- Setup is advanced: Expect file extraction, conversion tools and command-line work rather than a plug-and-play installer.
- Independent testing is limited: Published reports say they did not verify the port hands-on, so compatibility and stability may vary by build and setup.
- Use your own game data: The conversion process is described as requiring files from an original Xbox copy.
Bottom line
Halo-64 is a real, playable fan-made multiplayer port that brings four-player split-screen, bots, 13 maps and Firefight to an Expansion Pak-equipped Nintendo 64. It is best understood as an ambitious retro-computing project—not an official Halo release and not a replacement for the original campaign.
