A Halo 64 black screen is usually caused by a missing or disabled 8 MB Expansion Pak, an incorrectly configured emulator, dirty or damaged N64 connections, or a mismatched map conversion. Missing textures normally point to memory pressure or a bad conversion, while undetected controls are most often an incomplete emulator mapping, wrong controller port, or failing hardware. Work through the environment-specific checks below in order; do not treat every symptom as the same fault.

What Halo 64 is and what it requires

Halo 64 is a fan-made Nintendo 64 port of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer. It uses decompiled Halo game code with a new N64 renderer, menu, HUD and sound layer. The project does not include Microsoft’s retail game assets. You must supply your own Xbox game data, which the build process converts into N64 map data.

The current project README describes all 13 multiplayer maps, one-to-four-player split screen, up to eight bots at four skill levels, Firefight and optional Rumble Pak support. There is no network multiplayer. Windows Central also reported the 13-map and four-local-player figures in 2026. These capabilities do not change the memory requirement: the port needs an 8 MB Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak.

The README’s licensing and asset warning is important in practice: “You need your own copy of the Xbox game. The build converts its maps; nothing from the retail game is in this repository.” A ROM that was built without valid map input can start incorrectly, show missing geometry or textures, or fail while loading a level even when the console or emulator itself is working.

Fast symptom triage

Symptom Most useful first check What the result tells you
Entirely black screen or reset on launch Enable the emulator’s Expansion Pak setting, or verify an 8 MB Pak is installed and seated in the console A missing, disabled or poorly seated Pak is the first suspect because Halo 64 requires the extra memory
Black screen only on real hardware Clean cartridge contacts and the cartridge slot, then inspect connector pins and AV/RF cables Dirty contacts, a broken slot connection or a video-path fault can prevent a normal picture
Menus work but a level has untextured surfaces Lower 3D RESOLUTION, TERRAIN DETAIL, PARTICLES and VIEW MODEL detail The renderer may be running out of texture or general memory on that map
Geometry is corrupted or a map will not load Recheck the source maps and rebuild the ROM; test the diagnostic flags Map conversion or a mismatch between the ROM and converted data is more likely than a controller problem
Controller does nothing Map every N64 control, confirm the player port, and press A on the title screen An unassigned C button, Z trigger, wrong port or join step is common in emulators
Real stick is sluggish or buttons are intermittent Test another controller and clean the plug, contacts and joystick box The controller or its wiring may be failing rather than the game input code

Fixing a black screen in an emulator

1. Confirm that the file is being launched as an N64 game

Load the Halo 64 .z64 file through the emulator’s Nintendo 64 system, not as a generic binary or another console type. The project’s expected outputs include halo-n64.z64 and halo-campaign.z64. If you have several builds, note which one you are loading before changing settings so you can reproduce the result.

2. Turn on the Expansion Pak in ares

In ares, enable Nintendo64/ExpansionPak before loading the ROM. The documented configuration value is Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true. Restart or reload the game after changing it; changing memory hardware while a title is already running can leave the previous configuration in effect.

Do not substitute a Jumper Pak setting for the Expansion Pak. Halo 64 needs the 8 MB configuration. A game that reaches a title screen with another ROM does not prove that the Halo 64 memory setting is correct, because ordinary N64 software can run with less memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Separate emulator configuration from a bad build

After enabling the Pak, try a known-good N64 ROM in the same emulator profile. If other software also fails to boot, repair the emulator’s system configuration first. If other titles work but Halo 64 remains black, rebuild or replace the Halo 64 image and verify its map data rather than repeatedly changing controller or video options.

Fixing a black screen on a real Nintendo 64

Verify the required memory hardware

Install an 8 MB Expansion Pak in the console’s front memory-bay position and make sure it is fully seated. The Halo 64 README specifies the 8 MB requirement. iFixit’s N64 troubleshooting guidance explains that the console will not boot fully without a correctly installed Jumper or RAM Pak; for this port, the higher-capacity Expansion Pak is the required choice.

Power the console off, remove the Pak, check for contamination or bent contacts, and reinstall it firmly. A Pak that is present but not making reliable contact can produce the same symptom as a missing Pak. Do not repeatedly remove or insert it while the console is powered.

Clean the cartridge and slot

Turn the N64 off and disconnect power. Clean the cartridge contacts with an appropriate electronics contact-cleaning method and allow them to dry completely. Inspect the cartridge slot for dirt and for bent or broken connector pins. iFixit identifies dirty cartridges, dirty slots and broken cartridge-slot connections as common causes of a black display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleaning is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure. If the contacts are worn, a pin is broken or the board has another fault, cleaning alone will not restore the signal.

Check the video path

Reseat the RF or AV cable at both ends and, if possible, try a known-good cable of the same signal type. Verify that the television input is set for that connection. A persistent black display after the Expansion Pak, cartridge and slot checks can indicate a damaged AV port, cable or motherboard.

Isolate the failing component

  1. Test a known-good N64 cartridge in the same console and television.
  2. Test Halo 64, if possible, on a known-good N64 with a correctly installed 8 MB Expansion Pak.
  3. Try a known-good video cable and a different television input.
  4. Use the results to classify the fault as console hardware, video equipment or Halo 64 data/configuration.

If another game also fails, stop changing Halo 64 settings and service the console or video path. If other games work but every Halo 64 build fails, concentrate on the ROM build and Expansion Pak requirement.

Build the ROM and map data consistently

The Windows ROM Builder accepts either an Xbox disc image or an extracted maps folder. It writes halo-n64.z64 and halo-campaign.z64. Conversion uses substantial memory and disk space, so an interrupted or incomplete build can leave files that exist but do not contain a complete, usable map set.

Use matching outputs

Keep the ROM and converted map data from the same build. Do not copy a newly generated ROM over an older converted-data directory, or combine files from different source-map revisions. If you change the source disc image or the contents of the maps folder, rebuild the affected output rather than reusing the previous conversion.

Signs that conversion data is the problem

  • The emulator itself boots other N64 games normally.
  • The Halo 64 title or menu appears, but one map fails while another loads.
  • Geometry is incomplete, textures are absent across one level, or the game resets when a level begins.
  • Rebuilding from a verified disc image or complete maps folder changes the symptom.

A controller remap cannot repair a malformed map. Preserve the original source data, remove or clearly separate stale converted files, and produce a fresh ROM/data pair after correcting the input.

Missing textures, corrupted geometry and very low detail

Why the renderer can lose detail

Halo 64 converts Xbox map data into N64-specific big-endian images, streams models and textures from the cartridge, and uses Halo visibility data with tiny3d batches. Textures are converted to 4-bit CI4 or I4 formats, with mipmaps and detail textures where memory permits. The available memory varies by map and by the amount of geometry, terrain, particles and first-person assets being displayed.

High detail is not guaranteed on every map. The README notes that when a map cannot fit the high-detail configuration, the port uses a lower 640×240 mode. A lower-detail image is therefore not automatically a failed conversion; it can be the renderer selecting a mode that fits.

Reduce resource use from the in-game settings

  1. Open the video or display settings.
  2. Lower 3D RESOLUTION.
  3. Reduce TERRAIN DETAIL.
  4. Turn off PARTICLES.
  5. Lower VIEW MODEL detail.
  6. Enable FPS COUNTER while testing so you can see whether the reduced configuration remains stable.
  7. Restart the map after changing several settings, because assets already streamed into memory may not be discarded until a reload.

Change one or two options at a time if you are trying to identify the limit. If textures return after reducing terrain or view-model detail, the symptom is consistent with memory pressure. If the same surfaces remain untextured at the lowest practical settings, inspect the conversion inputs and diagnostic results.

Use diagnostic flags to classify the fault

Diagnostic builds expose flags including debug_untextured, debug_no_level, debug_no_objects, debug_no_first_person and debug_no_hud.

  • debug_untextured: renders stable geometry without normal texture use. If geometry is reliable in this mode, texture conversion or texture memory is the likely area to investigate.
  • debug_no_level: removes the level portion. If the failure disappears, inspect the converted map and the map files supplied to the builder.
  • debug_no_objects: removes placed objects. A change here points toward object data or object-related memory use.
  • debug_no_first_person: removes first-person assets. A change suggests view-model or weapon texture/geometry pressure.
  • debug_no_hud: removes the HUD. A change indicates a HUD asset or rendering interaction, not a missing Expansion Pak by itself.

These flags diagnose causes; they do not repair a bad map build or generate missing textures. Record which flag changes the behavior, then rebuild or adjust the corresponding input or setting.

Controller mapping: complete N64 layout

The standard Halo 64 scheme uses the N64 controller as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
N64 control Halo 64 action
Analog stick Look and turn
C buttons Move and strafe
Z Fire
R Throw grenade
A Jump
B Reload or action
L Melee
D-pad up/down Weapon selection or crouch
D-pad left/right Zoom or grenade selection
START Pause and menu

Alternate GoldenEye, bumper-jumper and North schemes are available. The port also provides separate stick and C-button look speeds and inverted-look options. Change those only after confirming that every physical control is actually reaching the game.

Emulator controller fixes

Map every input explicitly

  1. Open the emulator’s Nintendo 64 controller configuration.
  2. Assign the analog stick, all four C buttons, Z, L, R, A, B, all four D-pad directions and START.
  3. Select the correct controller port and player number. A pad assigned to port 2 will not control player 1’s menu.
  4. Save the profile, restart the game and press A on the title screen to join.
  5. Test movement, C-button strafing, Z fire and START before entering a match.

Some USB pads expose triggers or analog axes differently from an N64 controller. If Z or an axis is missing, remap that specific control in the emulator rather than switching the Halo 64 control scheme first. Confirm that the axis is not inverted or limited to a tiny dead zone.

When only some buttons work

  • Stick works, C buttons do not: the C buttons are probably unassigned or mapped to the wrong hat/axis.
  • Movement works, firing does not: check Z, then verify that the selected player is the one you joined with A.
  • Menu works, gameplay does not: check the game profile for a per-game override and confirm that the correct controller port remains active.
  • Everything is delayed or drifts: inspect dead-zone and axis settings before changing look speed.

Real-controller and console input fixes

Test with a known-good controller in the same console port. This separates a controller fault from a port or game fault. If the second controller works, inspect the original controller’s plug and cable, then its internal wiring and button contacts.

iFixit recommends trying another console port, checking the plug and wiring, cleaning button contacts and cleaning the joystick box. Sluggish movement can require lubrication of the joystick’s spring, ring and stick. Disconnect power before opening or cleaning hardware, use a suitable electronics-safe method, and allow parts to dry before testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If two known-good controllers fail in one port but work in another, suspect the console port. If the same controller fails in every port, suspect the controller. If the controller works in another N64 game but not Halo 64, return to the emulator/port assignment, title-screen join step and complete mapping checklist.

Rumble Pak: optional, not a boot requirement

Rumble is optional. Halo 64 can drive an N64 Rumble Pak and includes an on/off setting. In ares, rumble can be passed to a PC gamepad with vibration motors. Leave rumble disabled while diagnosing boot or basic input problems; enable it only after the controller mapping is stable.

A missing Rumble Pak cannot explain a black screen because it is not required for the game to start. Likewise, rumble motors that do not activate do not indicate a failed Expansion Pak.

Choosing the right N64 memory accessory

Accessory Required for Halo 64? Purpose When to install or enable
8 MB Expansion Pak Yes Provides the memory configuration required by the port Before launching the ROM or loading the game on real hardware
Jumper Pak No Basic N64 memory configuration for software that does not need Expansion Pak memory Do not use it as a substitute for Halo 64’s requirement
Rumble Pak No Vibration feedback After basic boot and input operation are confirmed

For a real console, buy or use an 8 MB Expansion Pak, not merely an accessory described as an N64 memory Pak without a capacity. For an emulator, the equivalent is the enabled Expansion Pak configuration, not a physical accessory connected to the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A complete troubleshooting order

  1. Identify the environment: ares or another emulator, or a real N64.
  2. Verify memory: set Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true in ares, or install and seat an 8 MB Expansion Pak in the console.
  3. Check the image: launch the correct .z64 output and keep the ROM paired with its matching converted map data.
  4. Test isolation: run another N64 game or a known-good emulator configuration.
  5. For real hardware: clean cartridge and slot contacts, inspect pins, and reseat or replace the RF/AV cable.
  6. For visual defects: lower the four resource-heavy settings and reload the map.
  7. For persistent map defects: rebuild from a verified Xbox disc image or complete maps folder, then use the debug flags to classify the failing asset group.
  8. For input failures: map all controls, confirm the player port, press A to join, and test a second controller or console port.
  9. Only after stability: enable Rumble Pak support and fine-tune look speed, inversion and control schemes.

This order keeps prerequisite problems, converted-data problems, rendering-memory limits, video hardware faults and controller faults separate. It also avoids mistaking an optional feature such as rumble for a requirement.
