The Haier HBM450SA1 is a silver, bottom-mount refrigerator with a 450 L gross capacity, reversible door and adjustable-temperature My Zone drawer. It is listed as discontinued, and CHOICE records a 2017 test, but its accessible listing withholds the scores needed to judge cooling performance. That makes this a specification-led review, not a performance verdict.
What kind of refrigerator is the HBM450SA1?
Haier describes the HBM450SA1 as a silver bottom-mount refrigerator: the freezer is below the fresh-food compartment. The product sheet lists a gross capacity of 450 L and external dimensions of 1725 mm high, 700 mm wide and 676 mm deep. Those are appliance dimensions, not the space required for installation; the manual says ventilation and door-side clearance matter, so check its installation diagram and conditions before deciding whether it fits.
Capacity figures vary by source and by the kind of volume being reported. Haier’s product sheet gives 327 L for the refrigerator and 123 L for the freezer. CHOICE calls those figures “claimed” compartment volumes and lists 450 L total volume. The manual instead reports 450 L total gross volume and 386 L total storage volume, made up of 312 L fresh-food storage and 74 L freezer storage. Gross capacity and storage volume are not interchangeable, and the manual’s storage figures differ from the product-sheet and CHOICE claimed compartment figures.
What features and controls does it have?
The product specification lists three full-width spill-proof shelves, a humidity-controlled crisper and a My Zone drawer with adjustable temperature. Other listed features include multidirectional airflow, Super Cool and Super Freeze functions, external electronic controls with an LED display, an LED interior light, a recessed handle and a reversible door. The appliance uses R600a refrigerant.

These are manufacturer-listed features, not evidence of how evenly or reliably the refrigerator holds temperature. Haier also cautions that product specifications may change, so the sheet should not be treated as confirmation of the condition or configuration of a particular used unit.
What does independent testing establish?
CHOICE classifies the model in its medium-size, freezer-on-bottom refrigerator category, marks it discontinued and records a 2017 test year. Its listing gives a four-star energy rating and 335 kWh/year claimed energy use for the tested model. That annual-use number is CHOICE’s listed claim, not a measurement presented here as a current real-world result.

CHOICE restricts the Expert Rating and detailed scores for keeping food fresh, temperature stability, evenness, temperature range, response to outside temperature and default settings to members. Without those results, the available evidence does not support calling the HBM450SA1 a strong or weak performer, a recommended model, or a refrigerator with proven temperature consistency. A historical $1,149 price shown by CHOICE is likewise not a current offer.

CHOICE lists the HBM450SA1 as discontinued. That indicates it is not a current model in that listing; it does not establish whether a particular retailer or second-hand seller has stock. Do not assume a current price or availability from the old CHOICE price record.

Andoo displays 143 customer reviews, which are historical customer anecdotes rather than controlled product tests. One displayed 2020 reviewer reported a freezer seal cover coming loose and a refrigerator seal loosening later; other displayed reviewers expressed satisfaction. A single report cannot establish a model-wide defect or reliability rate, so inspect seals and their condition if considering an individual used appliance.
What should owners know about setup and daily use?
Temperature settings
Haier’s manual recommends 5°C for the refrigerator and -18°C for the freezer as default settings. It covers temperature adjustment, operating modes, the panel lock and door alarm, and use of My Zone, Super Cool and Super Freeze. A refrigerator thermometer can help check compartment temperature, but it is not an essential accessory or a substitute for the built-in controls.

Installation and door reversal
The manual directs the installer to level and clean the appliance, then wait at least two hours before connecting it to power. It also covers door reversal. Because ventilation and clearance affect installation, use the manual’s diagram and conditions rather than relying only on the published outer dimensions.

Cleaning and refrigerant service
The manual includes care, cleaning and troubleshooting guidance. It identifies R600a as the refrigerant and says refrigerant-related servicing must be performed by an authorized service person. In Queensland, it specifies gas work authorization for hydrocarbon-refrigerant work involving cover removal; do not attempt refrigerant repairs yourself.
