You are expected to watch an enemy, identify a safe opening, choose the correct body part or ammunition, and then commit to a shot. Treating every encounter like a fast arena shooter wastes ammunition and leaves you without stamina when a defensive action matters.

The advice below separates confirmed systems from details that can only be checked in the released build. Enemy values, button assignments, mission objectives, rewards, and balance may change before launch.
Controls: what is confirmed and what remains build-specific
No complete keyboard, mouse, or controller binding table has been published. The functional actions are known, but their buttons may differ by platform, controller layout, accessibility setup, or future build. Open the live options or controls menu before starting a serious run and confirm every action yourself.

The revolver has two deliberate inputs
In a hands-on demonstration of the early six-shooter, pulling the trigger once loaded a bullet and a second trigger pull fired it. The interface showed rounds cycling into the chamber. Until that sequence becomes automatic, regard “cock/load” and “fire” as separate commands. Pressing fire when the weapon is not prepared can cost the opening you were waiting for.
- After an encounter or reload, look at the weapon interface rather than assuming a shot is ready.
- Use the cock/load input once and watch for the chamber or bullet indicator to change.
- Fire only after the weapon is prepared.
- Repeat the rhythm slowly in the tutorial, then increase speed while keeping your crosshair on a safe target.
This is a handling rule for the revolver, not a published promise that every weapon uses the same sequence. Test each new gun before taking it into a difficult fight.
Parry timing
The game identifies calculated parries as a core survival tool. A successful parry reported in the hands-on build stunned the attacker and created roughly one second of bullet time for follow-up shots. That window is valuable because it turns defence into a damage opportunity, but the exact timing and duration should be verified after release.
Do not mash the parry input as a general shield. Watch for a readable wind-up, keep enough distance to see the attack, and press once as the strike becomes committed. If you parry too early, you may spend the opportunity before the hit arrives; too late, and you take the attack without gaining the slow-motion opening.
Dash and stamina
Dashes consume stamina. They can cross small gaps even though the game does not provide a jump button in the reported build. A dash is therefore both an emergency escape and a positioning tool. Spending the entire bar to move a little faster can leave you unable to evade an explosive or take a parry attempt.

Enter each room with a reserve. If the first shot does not land, step or walk to improve the angle rather than immediately dashing. Use the dash when an attack is committed, when dynamite lands near your feet, or when a small gap blocks your retreat.
The combat loop that keeps beginners alive
- Observe. Identify the enemy type, its approach, and the attack that appears easiest to read. Do not begin by emptying the cylinder.
- Check the Codex. Read the entry for behavior, weak points, anatomy, rituals, and any hidden rule before repeating the encounter.
- Prepare the weapon. Cock or load the revolver, confirm ammunition, and position your crosshair on the intended body part.
- Take one information shot. Use a controlled attempt to confirm whether the displayed weak point and sequence match the live build.
- Defend with purpose. Save stamina for a dash or look for the attack wind-up that allows a parry.
- Reset the angle. If enemies flank you or an explosive lands badly, retreat around cover or into a clear space instead of trading damage.
This loop is slower than firing on sight, but it protects the resources that matter most: ammunition, health, stamina, and attention.
Which body parts should you shoot first?
Enemy anatomy determines damage, and the Codex is intended to record the relevant sequence. The following order was reported in a hands-on build, not guaranteed as a permanent solution. Check the live entry whenever the game updates or an enemy behaves differently.

These sequences illustrate why anatomy matters. A shot that looks damaging may be inefficient if it skips the required part. Body orientation can also cause mistakes: an enemy’s right leg appears on the opposite side of your screen. Pause long enough to identify the side, and use a single controlled shot to confirm the reading before committing ammunition.

Balance changes can alter health, order, or the reward for breaking a part.
How to use the Codex
The Codex is more than a lore menu. It is the game’s practical reference for enemy behavior, weak points, anatomy, rituals, and hidden rules. Open it whenever a new enemy appears, whenever a familiar enemy survives an expected shot, or whenever an encounter introduces an unfamiliar attack.
A reliable Codex routine
- Open the Codex after the first safe withdrawal from a new encounter.
- Read the behavior section before choosing a position. Look for approach patterns, attack preparation, or a reason to keep distance.
- Record the weak point and anatomy order in your own shorthand if the fight is hectic.
- Check for ritual or hidden-rule information before using a consumable or occult ability.
- Test one part sequence on a single enemy, then update your plan if the live result differs.
Because the game is unreleased, the exact menu button and entry layout are not established. Verify the Codex binding in the options menu and use the live entry rather than relying on a remembered guide.

The tutorial and first area: a safe first-session route
The reported early route moves from the tutorial into the Forgotten Desert and its opening town. That town is described as punishing: enemies can flank, dynamite can land at your feet, and an uncocked revolver can waste an opening. The aim of your first session should be competence, not speed.
1. Finish every tutorial prompt
Do not leave as soon as movement and shooting work. Use the tutorial to locate the controls for cocking, parrying, dashing, the Codex, and occult abilities. Confirm the stamina display and practice returning the revolver to a ready state after an exchange.
2. Enter the Forgotten Desert with a plan
Before pushing into the town, decide which input you will use to retreat and which attack you will attempt to parry. Keep the crosshair at a likely body-part height, but do not fire until you have identified the enemy. A planned retreat route is more valuable than a few extra steps forward.
3. Open the Codex for every new enemy
Flanking threats punish tunnel vision. If two enemies approach from different angles, move to a position where you can see both before trying to complete an anatomy sequence. The first safe kill should teach you something about timing, positioning, or weakness.
4. Test one sequence at a time
Against a reported Lawman sequence, aim for the first listed part, confirm the result, then prepare the next shot. Avoid firing repeatedly at the head simply because it is visually prominent. The object is to validate the order with minimal ammunition.
5. Practice a readable parry
Choose an attack with a clear firearm wind-up or other visible commitment. Keep enough distance to see the motion, press parry once, and use the resulting stun or brief bullet-time window for a deliberate follow-up. If the timing is uncertain, retreat and try again rather than spending health to learn it.
6. Treat dynamite as a stamina check
When an explosive lands at your feet, do not remain in place to finish a reload or body-part sequence. Move first; dash only if ordinary movement cannot clear the danger. Re-enter the fight after your stamina begins recovering and your weapon is ready.

7. Reset bad fights
A retreat is not a failed attempt. Flanking enemies, poor sight lines, an unprepared revolver, and an empty stamina bar compound one another. Break line of attack, restore a usable position, and begin the observation step again.
What is and is not known about the first missions
No complete first-mission objective list or reward table has been published in the available official and hands-on material. It would be misleading to present a definitive route such as “collect these items, then defeat this boss” before the released build or an official guide supplies those details.

For now, use the tutorial-to-Forgotten-Desert route as a training path. Mark objectives as they appear in your live build, and keep the Codex open for enemy discoveries. If the release changes the town layout, names, or rewards, the in-game objective text should take precedence over any pre-release guide.
Weapons, ammunition, armor, and occult choices
The listing advertises more than 20 weapons, custom bullets, armor, talismans, consumables, active and passive abilities, and three sacramental paths. Those ingredients imply several viable plans, but no best-in-slot ranking has been established. Choose a loadout by the problem it solves rather than by a single damage number.

In co-op, coordinate who is drawing attention and who is completing an anatomy sequence, but do not assume the unreleased game’s enemy targeting rules. In PvP, expect that a predictable cocking or parry rhythm may be readable by another player; verify the actual balance before building around one timing trick.

“The trigger did nothing.”
First check whether the revolver was cocked or loaded. In the reported handling model, the first trigger action prepared a bullet and the next fired. Look at the chamber indicator, then repeat the two-step rhythm.
“I ran out of stamina while escaping.”
You probably used dashes for ordinary movement. Walk to create space whenever possible, keep one dash available for an attack or explosive, and avoid beginning a fight with an empty bar.

“The parry never opened a counterattack.”
Parry is timing-based, not a permanent guard. Choose a readable wind-up, press once as the attack commits, and confirm that the enemy is actually stunned before spending ammunition on the follow-up.
“My shots are landing but the enemy is not dying.”
Open the Codex and verify the body-part order. Check screen orientation as well: the enemy’s right side appears on your left. Use one test shot on the first listed part before changing ammunition or blaming the weapon.
“The town fight collapsed when enemies flanked me.”
Stop advancing, move to a line where you can see both approaches, and reset the encounter. A clear angle is worth more than a risky shot taken while watching only one target.

Survival takes priority over completing the current sequence. Move away from the landing point, dash only when required, then cock the revolver after reaching a safe distance.
A practical checklist for every new room
- Do I know which enemy types are present?
- Have I opened their Codex entries?
- Is the revolver prepared, and do I know the next body part?
- Is enough stamina available for one defensive action?
- Where is my retreat route if an enemy flanks me?
- Which ammunition or occult ability addresses the weakness I have identified?
- Am I about to spend a consumable because it is necessary, or because I panicked?
Run this checklist until observation, preparation, and retreat become automatic. The game’s deliberate pacing rewards a controlled decision more than a fast but uninformed trigger pull.
Release status and what to verify before following older advice
As of October 16, 2026, Guns of Eschaton is still listed as unreleased on Steam with a planned December 8, 2026 launch date. The demo and wishlist path are the available official ways to see the current pre-release build. Button mappings, enemy anatomy, stamina costs, parry timing, mission objectives, rewards, and balance can change between that build and launch.
When you begin, give the live options menu and Codex priority over any remembered control scheme or pre-release video. The reliable principles are to prepare the weapon, target the recorded weakness, preserve stamina, and reset unsafe angles; the exact numbers and bindings belong to the build you are playing.
