GTA V is substantially better on PS5 if you value smoother driving and shooting, faster loading, ray-traced effects, and newer controller and audio features. Rockstar offers three PS5 graphics modes: Fidelity targets 30 FPS with native 4K and ray tracing, while Performance and Performance RT target 60 FPS at upscaled 4K. Those figures are developer targets, not guarantees of a locked frame rate in every scene. Eligible owners of physical or digital PS4 copies can download the PS5 version; disc owners must keep the PS4 disc inserted for ownership checks. Story Mode saves and GTA Online characters can be migrated once, with separate rules for purchased and earned GTA$.
PS5 versus PS4 at a glance
| Area | PS4 version | PS5 version |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics modes | Older-generation presentation; the supplied official specifications do not establish a matching PS4 frame-rate comparison. | Fidelity, Performance and Performance RT modes, with 30 or 60 FPS targets depending on mode. |
| Resolution and ray tracing | No PS5-generation mode specification applies. PS4 Pro remains a PS4 version. | Fidelity uses native 4K with ray tracing; Performance and Performance RT use upscaled 4K. Performance RT adds ray tracing to the 60 FPS target. |
| Loading, audio and controller | Uses PS4-generation loading and feature support. | Rockstar advertises faster loading, immersive 3D audio, improved textures, HDR options and advanced haptic feedback. |
| Upgrade path | Eligible physical and digital owners can obtain the PS5 edition through the PS5 PlayStation Store product page. | Physical-copy owners need the PS4 disc inserted whenever the console verifies entitlement. |
| Progress | Source platform for a one-time Story Mode and GTA Online migration. | Receives the migrated save, character and progression data. |
| GTA$ | Purchased GTA$ follow same-console-family rules; earned GTA$ have broader transfer treatment. | PS4 and PS5 are in the same PlayStation family for purchased GTA$ transfers. |
Rockstar’s current store listing describes the PS5 edition as offering graphics modes with up to 4K and up to 60 FPS: Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. “Up to” and “targets” matter: these are mode specifications, not independent laboratory measurements or a promise that every demanding scene will hold a fixed frame rate.
PS5 graphics modes explained
The PS5 release lets you choose between image quality and responsiveness from the game’s display settings. Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement defines three modes for the newer console generation: the official GTAV and GTA Online announcement.
Fidelity Mode: native 4K and ray tracing at a 30 FPS target
Fidelity is the visual-quality option. On PS5 it targets 30 FPS, renders at native 4K and enables ray tracing. Native 4K means the output is produced at 3840×2160 rather than reconstructed from a lower internal resolution. Ray tracing can improve how light and reflections appear, but the trade-off is a lower frame-rate target than the performance-oriented modes.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Rockstar later expanded the mode. Title Update 1.64 notes, published for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC versions, state that ray-traced reflections were added to Fidelity Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Reflective surfaces can show vehicles, characters and other scene details. The dated update notes are available at Rockstar’s Title Update 1.64 page. Because updates can change features, do not treat the original launch announcement as a complete description of the current build.
Performance Mode: upscaled 4K at a 60 FPS target
Performance Mode is designed for responsiveness. Rockstar describes it as “tuned for the most responsive gameplay experience” and gives it a 60 FPS target on PS5. It uses upscaled 4K rather than native 4K. Upscaling allows the game to render some work at a lower internal resolution and reconstruct a 4K output, reducing the rendering burden so the console can pursue the higher frame-rate target.
A 60 FPS target can make steering, aiming, camera movement and rapid traversal feel more immediate than a 30 FPS presentation. It does not mean that every mission, weather effect or busy multiplayer scene is guaranteed to remain at exactly 60 FPS; Rockstar’s wording is a target, not a measured lock.
Performance RT: 60 FPS target with ray tracing
Performance RT combines the responsiveness goal with ray tracing. On PS5 it targets 60 FPS and outputs upscaled 4K, while enabling ray tracing. This is the compromise mode for players who want some of the newer lighting and reflection effects without selecting the 30 FPS Fidelity target.

- Good product for use
In practical terms, the choice is straightforward: select Fidelity when native 4K detail and the highest visual-quality presentation matter most; select Performance when input response is your priority; select Performance RT when you want a balance of ray-traced effects and a higher frame-rate target. The official specifications do not provide controlled PS4-versus-PS5 benchmark runs, matching-scene frame-rate logs or quantified loading tests, so claims that one mode is always locked or that PS5 loads a specific number of seconds faster would go beyond the available evidence.
What else changes on PS5?
Loading and presentation
Rockstar advertises faster loading on the newer hardware, along with improved texture quality and HDR options. These are publisher-described platform benefits rather than a published stopwatch comparison. Your actual wait can vary with the game state, installed storage, system software and network activity. The PS5 edition also supports the graphics-mode selection described above, which the PS4 edition does not share in the same form.
3D audio and controller feedback
The PS5 release includes immersive 3D audio support and advanced haptic feedback, according to Rockstar’s platform update. A compatible audio setup and a DualSense controller are required to experience those features as intended. They change how effects and controller sensations are presented; they do not alter the underlying missions, map or story.

Rockstar’s March 2022 launch announcement described several PS5 and Xbox Series X|S GTA Online additions: a redesigned introduction and tutorial, an option to skip the Story Mode prologue before entering Online, and Career Builder. Career Builder supplied a GTA$4,000,000 starting windfall to select a business and essential equipment. That amount and feature set describe the launch-era next-generation offering. Rockstar has continued to update GTA Online, so check the current in-game screens and support information for present availability or later changes rather than assuming every launch detail is unchanged.

Can you upgrade GTA V from PS4 to PS5?
Yes, Rockstar’s support article last updated June 18, 2026 says owners of physical and digital PS4 copies can download the PS5 version from the PS5 GTAV product page in PlayStation Store: Free Grand Theft Auto V upgrade to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The exact entitlement displayed to you can depend on your account, region, edition and store status, so confirm the product page while signed in before buying anything.
Digital PS4 owners
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the digital PS4 license.
- On the PS5, open PlayStation Store and find the PS5 product page for Grand Theft Auto V.
- Check that the page identifies the PS5 version and displays the upgrade or download entitlement for your account.
- Start the download, then launch the PS5 edition after installation. Keep the PS4 version installed if you still need to access an old local save or compare versions.
Do not assume that every account sees the same offer. If the PS5 page shows a purchase price instead of an upgrade entitlement, verify that you are using the original purchasing account, that the edition is eligible and that the store region matches the license.
Physical PS4 owners
- Insert the PS4 game disc into the PS5 console.
- Open the PS5 GTAV product page in PlayStation Store while the disc is present.
- Use the entitlement shown for the eligible disc edition to download the PS5 game.
- Leave the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version; the disc is the ownership check.
A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so a disc-based entitlement cannot be verified on that hardware. In that situation you need a digital license or a console with a compatible disc drive; do not treat the physical-disc path as interchangeable with a digital purchase.

Not necessarily. Rockstar explicitly documents a free-upgrade route for eligible physical and digital PS4 owners. Whether your account qualifies is determined by the current PlayStation Store product page and Rockstar’s support terms, not by the fact that you own a PS4 console alone. If you bought a different edition, used a different account or changed regions, resolve that entitlement issue before paying for another copy.

Does GTA Online progress transfer from PS4 to PS5?
Rockstar supports a one-time migration of GTA Online characters and progression from PS4 to PS5. Its character-transfer support article, updated January 29, 2025, explains the current framework: Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers. Because migration is one-time, prepare the source profile carefully and use the current on-screen instructions before confirming.
What moves with the migration
- Your GTA Online character and associated progression can be migrated from the PS4 version to the PS5 version.
- Story Mode progress can also be migrated once, but it is a separate save-data process.
- Migration is not an ongoing synchronization service. Progress made independently on both versions does not merge repeatedly after the one-time transfer.
Story Mode save migration
Rockstar’s 2022 launch instructions said Story Mode save upload began from the Game tab of the Pause Menu, allowed one stored save per platform and kept an uploaded save available for 90 days. Those instructions are dated launch guidance, not a current guarantee that the same menu wording, retention period or flow remains unchanged. Before uploading, open the current Rockstar Support instructions from the migration flow and confirm which save is selected; do not upload an unintended slot expecting to replace it later.
Purchased versus earned GTA$
GTA$ do not all follow the same transfer rule. Rockstar’s support guidance, updated October 4, 2024, states that purchased GTA$ can transfer only between platforms in the same console family, while earned GTA$ transfer regardless of platform family: Platform Changes and GTA$ Transfers during GTA Online Profile Migration.

PS4 and PS5 are both in the PlayStation family, so purchased GTA$ fall within the same-family condition for this upgrade path. Earned GTA$ are treated differently under Rockstar’s rule. Keep receipts and review the migration confirmation if your balance does not appear as expected; do not assume a purchased balance follows the same cross-family rule as earned currency.

What the PS5 upgrade does not prove
- It does not establish a specific number of seconds saved on loading. Rockstar says loading is faster, but the supplied official material contains no controlled, scene-matched timing table.
- It does not prove a permanently locked 60 FPS. Both Performance modes use a target, and real scenes can vary.
- It does not make PS4 Pro a PS5 version. PS4 Pro remains part of the PS4 generation for edition and upgrade purposes.
- It does not guarantee that every launch-era GTA Online feature or menu is unchanged in 2026. Live-service updates can modify availability and presentation.
- It does not automatically merge two separately played profiles. Rockstar describes a one-time migration, not continuous cross-generation synchronization.
Which version should you use?
Choose the PS5 version when responsiveness matters
Choose Performance Mode if you spend most of your time driving, aiming or playing competitive GTA Online and prefer the 60 FPS target over native 4K. Choose Performance RT if ray-traced reflections and effects are important but you still want the higher frame-rate target. A 120 Hz television does not turn the game into a 120 FPS title; Rockstar’s documented PS5 targets top out at 60 FPS.
Choose Fidelity when image quality is your priority
Fidelity is the appropriate choice for a large 4K display, slower exploration and players who prefer native 4K detail and ray tracing to the smoother feel of a higher target. The mode targets 30 FPS, so camera movement and control response will not feel identical to Performance.
Keep using PS4 when your setup or entitlement requires it
The PS4 edition remains useful if you are playing on a PS4, sharing a physical copy with a PS4 console, or cannot yet verify a PS5 entitlement. If you own a PS4 disc but only have a PS5 Digital Edition, the disc cannot serve as the required ownership check. If you have already migrated and want to continue on PS4, review Rockstar’s current transfer rules first; a one-time migration should not be treated as a reversible, continuously synchronized arrangement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Upgrade and migration checklist
- Confirm whether your PS4 copy is digital or physical and identify the account that owns it.
- Check the PS5 PlayStation Store product page while signed into that account.
- For a disc copy, verify that your PS5 has a disc drive and keep the disc available for every launch.
- Install the PS5 version rather than assuming the PS4 application will silently become the newer edition.
- Before migrating, update the console and game, select the intended Story Mode save, and read the current Rockstar migration prompts.
- Record your GTA Online character and currency status before confirming a one-time transfer.
- After migration, launch GTA Online and Story Mode separately to verify the character, progression and chosen save.
- If purchased GTA$ are missing, compare the source and destination accounts and console family, then use Rockstar Support rather than attempting another migration.
Bottom line: is GTA V better on PS5?
For most players with a PS5, yes. The newer edition adds meaningful choices that the PS4 version cannot provide: a 60 FPS target in two modes, native 4K in Fidelity, ray-traced options, faster loading, 3D audio, HDR and DualSense-related features. The upgrade is especially compelling for GTA Online players who want smoother control and for owners of 4K displays who want the newer rendering modes.
The decision is less automatic for a disc owner without a compatible drive, an account whose Store entitlement is unclear, or someone satisfied with the PS4 edition and unable to migrate immediately. Check the current Rockstar support terms, keep the physical disc for verification, and treat the 30/60 FPS figures as targets rather than guarantees.
